PCA-6187 User’s Manual 2 Chapter 1 Hardware Configuration 1.1 Introduction The PCA-6187 Series all-in-one indu strial grade single board comp uter is a high performance and full-featured computing engine. It follows the PICMG 1.0 specification and meets mo st requirements for industrial applications.

PCA-6187 User’s Manual 6 1.4 Jumpers and Connectors Connectors on the PCA-6187 singl e board computer link it to external devices such as hard disk drives and a keyboard. In additi on, the board has a number of jumpers used to configure your system for your applica- tion.
7 Notice: The 4-pin ATX 12V power connector "ATX1" must be connected to the power supply to provide adequate power to the CPU card. Otherw ise system might be unstable.

11 1.7 Safety Precautions Notice: Before install your PCA-6187 into a chassis, make sure that all components on both sides of the CPU card do not touc h any metal parts, especially the chassis wall and add-on card at the adjacent slot. Warning! Always completely disconnect the power cord from your chassis whenever you work with the hardware.
PCA-6187 User’s Manual 12 1.8 Jumper Setti ngs This section provides instru ctions on how to configure your single board computer by setting the jumpers. It also includes the single board com- puter's default settings and your options for each jumper .
13 1.9 System Memory The PCA-6187 has four sockets for 184-pin dual inlin e memory modules (DIMMs) in two separated memory chan nels. It can operate with single channel or dual channel modules. W e recommend to use dual channel mode to provid e optimized performan ce.
PCA-6187 User’s Manual 14 1.9.1 CPU FSB and memory speed The PCA-6187 can accept DDR SDRAM memory chips without parity . Also note: The PCA-6187 accepts PC2100 (DD R266), PC2700 (DDR 333) and PC3200 (DDR 400) DDR SDRAM, depen ding on the CPU front side bus frequency (FSB).
15 1.10 Memory Inst allation Procedures T o install DIMMs, first make sure the two handles of the DIMM socket are in the "open" position. i.e. Th e ha ndles lean outward. Slowly slide the DIMM module along the plastic guides on both ends of the socket.

If you have a number of card s installed or have a packed chassis, you may need to pa rtially remove the card to make all the connections.
19 Chapter 2 2.3 Floppy Drive Connector (CN3) Y ou can attach up to two floppy disk dri ves to the PCA-6187's on board controller . Y ou can use 3.5" (720 KB, 1.44 MB ) drives. The single board computer comes wi th a 34-pin daisy-chain drive con- nector cable.

21 Chapter 2 2.7 Ethernet Connector (CN8 and CN34) The PCA-6187 is equ ipped with si n gle/dual high-performance 32-bi t PCI-bus Ethernet interface, which is fully compliant with IEEE 802.3/u 10/100Mbps CSMA/CD and IEEE 802.3ab 1000Base-T standard s. It is supported by all major network o perating systems and is 1 00% Novell NE-2000 compatible.

This type of inform ation is stored in battery-backed memory (CMOS RAM) so that it retains th e setup information when th e power is turned o ff.
29 Chapter 3 3.2 Entering Setup T urn on the computer and press <Del > to allow you to enter the BIOS setup. 3.3 St andard CMOS Setup Choose the “Standard CMOS Features” option from the “Initial Setup Screen” menu, and the screen below will be displayed.
PCA-6187 User’s Manual 30 3.4 Advanced BIOS Features The “Advanced BIOS Features” scr een appears when choosing the “Advanced BIOS Features” item from th e “Initial Setup Screen” menu. It allows the user to configure the PC A-6187 according to his particular requirements.
31 Chapter 3 3.4.5 Quick Power On Self T est Allows the sy stem to skip certain tests while bo oting. This will decrease the time needed to boot the system. 3.4.6 First/Second/Third Boot Device The BIOS tries to load the OS with the devices in the sequence selected.
PCA-6187 User’s Manual 32 3.4.15 Security Option Select whether the password is required every time the system bo ots or only when you enter setup. "System" The system will not boot, and access to Setup will be denied if the correct password is not entered at the p rompt.
33 Chapter 3 3.5.1 DRAM Timing Select able This item allows you to cont rol the DRAM speed. The selections are "Manual" or "By SPD". 3.5.2 CAS Latency Ti me This controls the latency between DDR RAM read command and the time that the data actually becomes av ailable.

PCA-6187 User’s Manual 36 3.6.1 IDE HDD Block Mode If your IDE hard drive supports bl ock mode select Enabled for automatic detection of the optimal number of bl ock read/writes per sector the drive can support. This field is for systems with only SCSI drives.
37 Chapter 3 3.6.5 USB Controller Select Enabled if your system contains a Universal Serial Bus (USB) con- troller and you have USB peripherals. The choices: "Enabled", "Dis- abled". 3.6.6 USB 2.0 Controller This entry is for disable/enable USB2 .
PCA-6187 User’s Manual 38 3.6.12 Onboard FDC Cont roller When enabled, this field allo ws you to connect your floppy d isk drives to the onboard floppy disk drive connector instead of a separate controller card. If you want to use a dif ferent controller card to connect the floppy disk drives, set this field to Disabled.

65 Chapter 7 7.2 Underst anding SCSI SCSI (pronounced .scuzzy .) stands for Small Co mputer Systems Inter- face. SCSI is an industry standard computer interface for connecting SCSI devices to a common SCSI bus. A SCSI bus is an electrical pathway that consists of a SCSI interface installed in a computer and one or more SCSI devices.
PCA-6187 User’s Manual 66 • If you are booting your computer from a SC SI hard disk drive con- nected to the SCSI bus, the Boot SC SI ID setting in the SCSISelect utility must correspond to the SCSI ID of the device from which you are booting. By default, the Boot SCSI ID is set to 0.

PCA-6187 User’s Manual 70 SCSI Bus Interface Definitions • Host Adapter SCSI ID -(Default: 7) Sets the SCSI ID for the SCSI controller . The Adaptec SCSI contro ller AIC-7899 is set at 7, which gives the highest prio rity on the SCSI bus. W e recommend th at you do not change this setting.
71 Chapter 7 • Enable Disconnection -(Default: Y es) When set to Y es, allows the SCSI device to disconnect from the SC SI bus. Leave the setting at Y es if tw o or more SCSI device is connected, changing the setting to No results in slightly b etter performan ce.
