37 Chapter 3 Swap Fault T olerance (SFT) Function: SFT provides automated residu e to the network interface card as a fault tolerance. W ith the two net work ports connected to different switches, one is the primary network for normal team and the other is the backup and is usually not in the “On” state.
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 38 S tati c Link Aggregation Function: S tati c Link Aggregation provides network links for increased transmission and receivi ng flow as well as nega tive balancing and fault tolerance. The two network ports shar e all net work flows, when one team develops problems, the other one tak es over all tasks.
2 CHAPTER 4 Managing Array s and Disks This section gives inform ation about Arrays and Disks. This sections includes: • RAID Minimum Disk Requirements • Arrays and Disk States • T asks and Spar.
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 40 Chapter 4 Managing Arrays and Disks 4.1 RAID Minimum Disk Requirement s The following table lists the minimum and maximum num ber of disks for each RAID level. 4.2 Underst anding Array and Disk St ates The controller uses states to report the status of arrays and disks.
41 Chapter 4 1. NORMAL The NORMAL state is displayed when everything is functioning correctly . 2. CRITIC AL The CRITICAL state is displayed when the array is no longer redundant (fault tolerant) b ecause of one or more disk fail- ures. Arrays can still be read a nd written to, but the data is no longer protected should another drive fail.
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 42 a rescan of all channels after disconnecting a disk, the state of every array using the missing disk changes from NORMAL to either the CRITICAL or OFFLINE, depending on the array type.
43 Chapter 4 Rescanning for Changes in S tate When using the bcadm program, the di sk information that displays when you run a query command is always cu rrent. In the RAIDConsole appli- cation, however , the inform atio n displayed in the Disk List area is the state of the disks when they were last scanned.
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 44 4.3 St arting and Stopping T asks T asks are started when you: • Create a redundant array . • T ransform an array . • Restore an array . • Check for consistency on redundant arrays. • V erify a consistency bitmap (ch eck_bitmap) on a redundant array .
45 Chapter 4 4.4 Working with S p ares 4.4.1 About Sp aring Options The DNS-3200 Series RAID contro lle r supports three sparing o ptions: • Distributed A patent-pending sparing option comp rised of.
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 46 4.4.2 Using Distributed Sp aring The distributed spar ing feature reserve s space on each drive in an array . This space is used when the data from a failed drive is being re generated during a restore task.
47 Chapter 4 T o add a distributed spar e while creating an array: 1. On the Array menu, click Create . 2. Configure the array . 3. In the Distributed Spare field, click Enabled .
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 48 T o add a distributed spar e while transforming an array: 1. On the Array menu, click T ransform . 2. Configure the new array . 3. In the Distributed Spare field, click Enabled . T o remove a distributed spare: 1. On the Array menu, click T ransform .
49 Chapter 4 Notes: 1. Assigning a d edicated sp are does not reser ve space on that drive. Therefor e, an automatic restore is not guaranteed if a di sk fails. If a disk does fail, you must make room on the disk for the fail-over to complete, or you must assign a differ- ent disk with enough room.
DNS-3200 User’s Manual 50 4.4.4 Using Global S p aring A global spare is a disk that you assi gn as an alternate disk for multiple arrays instead of associat ing it with just one. Many arrays can be restored using the global spare disk as long as it is not already part of the array and it has enough space available.
2 CHAPTER 5 BIOS Configuration Utility This section explains when and how to use the BIOS Configuration Utility . This sections includes: • When t o Use BIOS Utility • BIOS Utility Color Codes •.
