19 Preparations Preparing the Camcorder Attaching and Deta ching the Eye Cup Attaching the Eye Cup Attach the eye cup so that it covers the rubber portion of viewf inder unit. • The dioptric adjustment lever can be operated even with the eye cup attached.
20 Using the LCD Display 1. Slide the OPEN swit ch in the dire ction of the arrow to unlock the LCD pa nel. 2. Pull out the LCD panel. 3. Rotate the LCD panel and adjust it to the desired position. Y ou can change the LCD display to black & white ( 21).
21 Preparations Using the Viewfinder and th e LCD Display Simultaneously By default, the viewfinder display is turned off while you use the LCD display . Follow the procedur e below to use both of them simultaneously . 1. Press the MENU button. 2. T urn the SELECT/SET dial to select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ] and pres s the dial.
22 Fastening the Grip Belt Adjust the grip belt so that you can r each the zoom lever with your index and middle finger , and the ST ART/STOP button with your thumb. Attaching the Shoulder Strap Pass the ends throu gh the strap mount and adjust the length of the strap.

24 Using the W ireless Controller When you press the buttons on the wireless contro ller , point it at the camcor der’ s remote sensor . Inserting the Batteries The wireless controller opera tes with two AA (R6) batteries. 1. Open the battery cover .

27 Preparations Changing Settings with the MENU Button Many of the camcor der’ s functions can be changed fr om the on-scre en menu. Selecting Menus and Settings 1. Press the MENU button to open the menu. 2. T ur n the SELECT/SET dial to select a submenu and pr ess the dial.
28 Language and Date/T ime Settings Changing the Display Language The default language for displays an d menu items is En glish. The language c an be changed to German , Spanish, Fren ch, Italian, Polish, Ru ssian, simplified Chinese or Japanese. T o change the display la nguage, open the menu and select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ].
29 Preparations Displaying the Date and Time while Recording Y ou can display the date and time in the lower left corner of the screen. Open the menu and select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ]. Select [GUIDE INFO], set it to [D/T DISPLA Y] and close the menu. Changing the Date Format Y ou can select between thr ee date formats: [JAN .

31 Recording Low-angle Recording The carrying handle is equipped with a dupl icate set of recor ding and zoom contr ols, ideal for low-angle recor ding. Slide the LOCK switch in the dir ection of the arrow to prevent the acciden tal operation of these contr ols.
32 Screen Displays while Recor ding Tim e c o d e Y ou can select between drop frame or non-drop frame time code ( 44). Remaining tape Indicate s the remaining time on the tape in mi nutes. “ END” will ap pear when the tape reache s the end. • When the time left is less than 15 seconds, the remaining tape time may not appear .
33 Recording Selecting the On-Screen Displa ys Y ou can select the amount of information sh own on the screen fr om full, partial or no display . Repeatedly pressing the DISP . button will cycle through the options in the following sequenc e. 1 This level cannot be selected if [SYSTEM SE TUP/ ] [ALL DISPLA Y] is set to [DISABLE].
34 Selecting the Signal Standard and Aspect Ratio Y ou can select the signal standar d of your r ecordi n g (high definition or standar d definition) and, for standar d definition recor dings, also the aspect ratio of the r ecording.
35 Recording Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom using the zoom lever on the side grip or the one on the carrying handle. Y ou can also use the zoom ring on the lens or the zoom buttons on the wir eless controller .
36 Zoom buttons on the carrying handle: The zoom sp eed is constant and can be set to one of 16 zoom speed levels. Set the ZOOM SPEED switch to C (constant) and change the zoom speed level as described previously . Zoom buttons on the supplied wir eless contr oller: The zoom speed is constan t and cannot be adjusted.
37 Recording Adjusting the Focus The camcord er can be set to Autofocus or Manual Focus. Autofocus The autofocus can be set to Normal AF or Instant AF *. The camcor der has also a Push AF function to allow for a temporary autofocus while focusi ng manually .
38 When recor ding under bright conditions, the cam cor der closes down the apertur e. When the aperture value used is too large, the pictur e may a ppear blurr ed.
39 Recording Using the Focus Assist Functio ns (Peaking and Magnifying) In order to make m anual focusing easier , you can use two assist functions: Peaking emphasizes the outlines of the subject creati ng a clearer contrast, and Magnifying enlar ges the image on the scr een.
40 Focus Preset This function enables a focus position to be memorized. Later , you can return to the preset focus position instantly . Y ou can also select the speed at which the camcorder returns to the preset focus position. Presetting the Focus 1.
41 Recording Using the ND Filter When recor ding under bright conditions, the camcorde r closes down the apertur e. When the aperture valu e used is too larg e, the picture ma y appear blurred. T ur n the built-in ND filter on/off accord ing to the screen display .
42 Selecting the Frame Rate Y ou can select from the foll owing frame rates depending on the re cording mode: 60i, 30F , 24F (2:3 pulldown-converted) 60i, 30F , 24F (2:3 pu lldown-co nverted o r 2:3:3: 2 pulldown -converted) 60i Mode Records 60 interlaced fields per second, th e sam e as standard-definition TV sign als.
43 Recording Selecting the Frame Rate Open the menu and select [SIGNAL SETUP]. Select [FRAME RA TE], select a setting option and select [YES] to confirm the selection and close the menu. The selected frame rate appears on-screen. Selecting the 24F Pulldown Mode Open the menu and sele ct [CAMERA SETUP].
44 Setting the T ime Code Selecting the Frame Setting When recor ding in a mode other than SD at a frame rate of 24F , you can select between drop frame or non-drop frame time code . Open the menu and select [SIGNAL SETUP]. Sele ct the [TIME CODE] submenu and then [FRAME SETTNG].
45 Recording In SD mode with the frame rate set to 24F , the fr ames value of the time code can be set only in multiples of 5. When you change the fra me rate from 60i/30F to 24F , the frames value of the time code will automatically become a multiple of 5.
46 Synchronizing the Camcorder ’ s T ime Code Y ou can synchronize this camcorder’ s time code to an external time code generator . Y ou can also include in the recor ding the user bit signal r eceived from the TIM E CODE terminal ( 48). The camcorde r offers the followi ng synchronization opti ons.
47 Recording While a time code signal is b eing received, th e [FR AME SETTNG] and [COUN T -UP] settin gs of the camcorder will be ignor ed and the external time code ’ s drop-frame bit will be used instead (if the external time code is non-drop frame, “NDF” will appear on the side panel).
48 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected from the date or the time of re cording, or an identi fication code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system that is usefu l for labeling tapes. Ther e ar e sixteen possible characters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
49 Recording Audio Recording When recor ding on the tape in either HDV or DV standar d, audio is recor ded on two channels. The audio transfer rate is 384 kbps and the sampling fr equency is 48 kHz. Y ou can recor d audio in 16-bit mode (samplin g frequency 48 kHz), or 12-bit mode (sampling frequency 32 kHz).
50 Recording Audio Select the audio input fr om the built-in microphone or external micr ophone (MIC terminal), XLR MIC (XLR terminals) or XLR LINE (XLR terminals). Y ou can select the audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2. Selecting the Audio Channel Open the menu and select [AUDIO SETUP].
51 Recording Using the XLR terminals 1. Connect a microphone to on e of the XLR terminals. T o supply a micropho ne with phantom power , set the corresponding switch to ON. Make sure to connect the m icrophone first, be fore turning the phantom power on.
52 Hiding/Displaying the Audio Level Indicator Open the men u and select [D ISPLA Y SETUP/ ]. Select [AUDIO L EVEL], select a setting option and clo se the me nu. The audio level indicator can also be turned on/off with a custom key ( 73). Automat ic Audio Adj ustment Set the corr esponding switch to A.
53 Recording Y ou can activate the audio peak limiter to prev ent audio distortions. Wh en activated, the audio peak limiter will limit the amplitude of audio inpu t signals when they exceed -4 dBFS. The audio peak limiter can be activated if at least one of the channels is set to manual audio adjustment.
54 Image Stabilizer Y ou can select to activate the image stabilizer or turn it off de pending on the recor ding conditions. Open the menu and s elect [CAMERA SETUP]. Select [IMG ST AB], select a setting option and close the menu. The image stabilizer cannot be turned off in the Easy Recording mode.
55 Recording Using the Programmed AE Modes Programmed au to exposure modes pr ovide advan ced automated r ecording tech niques ensuring professional r esults in va rious shooting conditions. Manual ( 58) This mode offers the cr eative fr eedom of a complete range of manual controls.
56 Easy Recording The camcorder automatica lly controls th e focus, shutter speed, apertur e, gain, white balance, a nd AE Shift allowing you to simply point and film. This mode locks all of these features and options, making them fixed and unadjustable.
57 Recording Av ailable controls /functions by progra mmed AE mode 1 Available during exposure lock . 2 Available during clear scan. EXP . LOCK button – – PUSH AE button – Iris ring – 1 – 1 .
58 Recording in Manual Mode Y ou can set the exposure at any combi nation of shu tter speed and apertur e. The aperture value can be adjusted in 1 /8 EV stops; however , the apertur e value di splayed on the scr een will change only in 1/4 EV stops. Av ailable settings * Can only be selected if the custom function [IRIS LIMIT] is set to [OFF].
59 Recording With the custom function [LANC AE SHIF T] ( 97) , you can change the func tion of the AE SHIF T dial on the optional ZR-2000 Zoom Remote Cont roller and use it to change the apertur e value.
60 Recording in Shutter -Priority (Tv) Mode Av ailable shutter speeds when recording movies depend on the selected frame rate: Av ailable shutter speeds when recording still i mages: 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/ 60, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500 1. Set the dial to Tv .
61 Recording Recording in Aperture-Priority (Av) Mode The aperture value can be adjusted in 1/8 EV stop s; however , the aperture value displayed on the scree n will change only in 1/4 EV st ops. Av ailable aperture values F1.6, F1.8, F2.0, F2.2, F2.4, F2.
62 Adjusting the Exposure Exposure Lock 1. Set the dial to , Tv or Av . 2. Press the EXP . LOCK button. • The exposure indicator a ppears. Use the exposu re indicator as an estimate. • The mark above the indicator indicates the standard exposur e (calculated by the camcorde r).
63 Recording Gain The gain control adjusts the level of the video sign al generated depending on the lighting and shooting conditions. Y ou can select fr om automatic gain contr ol or one of 3 pr eset gain le vels (L : low, M: middl e, H: high) to which you can independently assign gain values fr om -3 dB to +36 dB ( ) or + 18 dB ( ).
64 Gain Fine T uning 1. Set the dial to M , , Tv or Av . 2. O pen the menu and selec t [CAMERA SETUP]. Select the [GAIN SETTING] submenu and then one of the GAIN switch options. 3. Select [TUNE 0.0dB] and pr ess the SELECT/SET dial. 4. T urn the SELECT/SET dial to select the desired gain lev el and press the dial.
65 Recording White Balance The camcord er uses an electron ic white balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e for accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions.
66 Setting the Color T emperature 1. Set the dial to a re cording pr ogram other than . 2. Set the AWB switch to OFF and the WHITE BAL. switch to PRE. 3. Set the WHITE BAL. PRESET switch to . The color temperature currently set will be displayed. 4. Press the WHITE BAL.
67 Recording Zebra Pattern This camcord er has a zebra pattern featur e that shows black and white diagonal stri pes over the ar eas that are overexposed. The ze bra patter n is on ly displayed on the screen and w ill not affect your recor dings. The zebra pattern will not be displaye d while the Peaking function is activated ( 39).
68 Color Correction With the color corr ection function you can set the camcor der to detect the characteristi cs of a certain color or pattern (color phase, chroma, ar ea and Y leve l) and corr ect them automatical ly when recor ding. Y ou can set the color corre ction for up to two dif ferent c olors (A and B).
69 Recording Activating the Color Corr ection 1. Open the menu and select [CAMERA SETUP] and select the [COLOR CORR.] submenu. 2. Select [CO RRECT], select a co rrection mode and close th e menu. • Y ou can corr ect only the predefined A ar ea, only the predefined B ar ea or both.
70 Skin Detail Function With the skin detail function you can set the camc order to detec t the characteristics of a certain color or tone. Detail in the tar geted ar eas will be softened in or der to conceal skin imperfections. T ar geted ar eas will be identified on the screen by a zebra pattern alternating with the normal picture.
71 Recording Selective Noise Reduction With the selective noise r eduction function you can set th e camcorder to detect the characteristics of a certain co lor or ton e and autom atically reduce noise in the tar geted areas.
72 Clear Scan This feature allows you to recor d a computer’ s CRT screen or oth er equipment without displaying black band or flicker on the scre en. Y ou can adjust the frequency fr om 60.1 Hz to 203.9 Hz. 1. Set the dial to M or Tv . 2. T urn the SHUTTER dial to set the shutter speed to “CS”.
73 Recording Custom Keys Y ou can assign fr equently used functions to the custom keys. The custom keys can have dif ferent functions assigned to them in each of the operating modes. Default settings: T o check the current custom key settings: In a recording mode: Open the menu and select [DISPLA Y SETUP/ ].
74 Changing the Cust om Keys Setting * Default value in mode. Open the menu and select [SYSTEM SETUP/ ]. Sele ct [CUSTOM KEY 1] or [CUSTOM KEY 2], select the function you wish to assign to the custom key and close the menu. When you do not wish to use the custom keys, select [(NONE)].
75 Recording [DA T A CODE] Data Code ( 110) Press the CUSTOM KEY (1 or 2) button. The data code appears. Press the bu t ton again to hide the data code. [TC HOLD] Time Code Hold Y ou can pr ess the custom key button to free ze the disp lay of the time code.
76 [CP BKWD KEY] Custom Preset Backwar d Key Press the CUSTOM KEY 2 button. Usually , pressing the CUSTOM PRESET SELECT button will cycle forwards to the following custom preset file. Pressing the custom key butt on instead will cycle backwards to the pr eceding custom preset file.
77 Recording Color Bars/Audio Reference Signal Y ou can generat e and recor d color ba rs signals and a 1 kHz audio r efere nce signal. With the customized functions ( 97) you can choo se between SMP .
78 Extern al Connections V ideo Signal Output Standards The standard of th e video signal output from th e HD/SD SDI ( only), HD/SD COMPONENT OUT and HDV/DV terminals depen ds on the standar d used for r ecord ing (or the standar d of the r ecor ding on the tape being played back) and on various menu settings.
79 External Connections Connecting to a Monitor/TV The different recording modes and the correspon din g output terminals are given in the table below: 1 only .

81 External Connections Using the HDV/DV T erminal • When connecting the camcorder to a monitor or TV th at supports DV input, you may need to carry out a procedur e on the monitor or TV to recognize the camera.
82 Connection to a Standard Definition TV or Monitor Using the HD/SD COMPONENT OUT or VIEWFINDER COMPONENT OUT T erminal • Refer to the connection diagram in the previous section ( 80). • Select the appropriate compon ent video signal depending on the TV or monitor yo u connect.
83 External Connections Audio Output Selecting the Audio Channel Y ou can select the channel for audio signal output fr om the A/V1 terminal. * Default value in mode. Open the menu and select [AUDIO SETUP]. Select [OUTPUT CH], select a setting option and close the menu.

85 External Connections Digital V ideo Control This feature enables the camcorder to contr ol the r ecord and stop functions of an external digital device connected to the ca mcorder th rough the HDV/DV te rminal. The device must comply with the IEEE1394 A V/C pr otocol.
86 Recording an External V ideo Signal (HDV/DV In, Analog Line-In) Y ou can r ecord on the tape an external video signal , either from the HDV/DV input (SD or HD standar d) or from the analog vide o input (SD standard).
87 External Connections Converting Analog Signals into Digital Signals (Analog-Digital Converter) Using the camcor der you can convert analog video input signals to a digi tal video signal (SD standard) and output it through the HDV/DV termi nal. Open the menu and sele ct [SIGNAL SETUP].
88 Connecting to a Computer T o connect the camcorder to a co mputer you will need a computer equipped with an IEEE1394 (DV) terminal and video editing softwar e with video capturing capability installed. Use the opti onal CV -250F (4 pin-6 pin) DV cable or a commer cially availa ble 6 pin-6 pin DV cable .
89 Customization Customizat ion Custom Preset Settings Y ou can select preset level for a number of pictur e-re lated parameters (23 parameters wh en recor ding movies, 17 when recor ding still images). A list of th e parameters is given in the following table and you can find more detailed descriptions on page 94.
90 Changing Custom Preset Parameters 1. Open the menu, select [CUSTOMIZE] and then select the [CUSTOM PRESET] submenu. The custom preset submenu appears. 2. Select [ EDIT] from the column on t he left. The cursor will move to the bottom bar of the custom pr eset editing screen .
91 Customization Renaming a Custom Preset File Follow steps 1-3 in Changing Custom Preset Parameters ( 90) to select the custom preset file you want to rename. 1. From the bottom b ar , select [ RENAME]. The first character of the custom pr eset file name will start flashing.
92 Activating the Custom Pr eset Settings 1. P ress the CUSTOM PRESET SELECT button. • Repeatedly pressing the button will cycle thr ough the available custom pr eset files. Y ou can also set a custom key as [CP BKWD KEY] to cycle thr ough the custom preset files in reverse order (fr om last to first) ( 73 ).
93 Customization Reading a Custom Pr eset File from a Still I mage With the custom function [PHO TO BUTTON] ( 97) yo u can se lect to save the custom pres et settings curren tly in use along with a still image recorde d in mode (simultaneous recor ding, 115).
94 [GAM] Gamma Curve The gamma curve changes the overall look of the image. Y ou can select from [NORMAL] , [CINE1 ] or [CINE2]. [NORMAL]: standar d gamma setting suitable for video. [CINE1]: appropriate for video telecined from film. [CINE2]: ap propriate for t ransfer t o film.
95 Customization [SHP] Sharpness Adjust the sharpness level in th e range -9 to +9. No ise artifacts caused by too-high sh arpness settings can be reduced using the coring setting. [HDF] Horizo ntal Detail Fr equenc y Select the horizontal definition of the image fr om [HIGH], [MIDDLE] or [LOW].
96 [RGN] R Gain Adjust the intensity of r ed tones in the range -50 to +50. [GGN] G Gain Adjust the intensity of gr een tones in the range -50 to +50. [BGN] B Gain Adjust the intensity of blue tones in the range -50 to +50 .
