1-1 Chapter 1 Intr oduction The 9T122-24 MicroLAN™ Switch Module, shown in Figur e 1-1, is a three port T oken Ring bridge and r outer module. This module supports either one token ring with 24 HUB connections, or two separate T oken Rings with 12 HUB connections, and an interface to the FNB backplane.
Introduction 1-2 Management Information Base (MIB) Support The 9T122-24 module provides MIB support including: • IETF MIB II (RFC 1213) • IETF RMON MIB (RFC 1271 and 1513) • IETF Bridge MIBs (RFC 1493 and 1525) • IEEE 802.

Introduction 1-4 Related Manuals The manuals listed below should be used to supplement the procedur es and technical data contained in this manual. SmartSwitch 9000 Installation Guide SmartSwitch 9000.
2-1 Chapter 2 Installation Installing the Micr oLAN Module The SmartSwitch 9000 MicroLAN Module may be installed into any of the 14 slots that are available. T o install, follow the steps below: 1. Switch off the power supplies and r emove all power from the SmartSwitch 9000 chassis.

2-3 Installation The Reset Switch The Reset switch is located on the front panel, under the top plastic tab as shown in Figure 2-2. It serves two functions: • Pressing the r eset switch twice within three seconds causes the pr ocessor (i960) to reset.
Installation 2-4 User -Accessible Components Figure 2-3 shows the various components that ar e accessible to the user . These consist of an eight-position dip switch (explained in the next section), replaceable PROMs and sockets for RAM. These will be used for future upgrades.
2-5 Installation Setting the Module Car d DIP Switch An eight-switch DIP switch is located on the module car d as shown in Figure 2-3 and in Figure 2-4.
Installation 2-6 See the Cautions at the end of this table. Ring Speed The module defaults to a 16Mbps ring speed on all rings. This may be changed though local management.
2-7 Installation Multi-Ring Out Capability Any port of the module may be configured as a ring-out port thr ough management software. In this configuration a stand-alone passive concentrator (such as an IBM 8228) may be added to the ring as shown in Figure 2-5.
Installation 2-8.
3-1 Chapter 3 Operation The 9T122-24 MicroLAN Module pr ovides connectivity between the front panel T oken Ring(s) and the FDDI rings on the backplane (FNB-1 or FNB-2). SmartSwitch 9000 modules connect to either the Internal Network Bus (INB) or the Flexible Network Bus (FNB) bus.
Operation 3-2 Bridging The 9T122-24 is configured for SR T bridging. It will pass SR (Source Routing) frames between the rings and provides translation to transpar ent frames over the FNB to Ethernet and FDDI modules.
3-3 Operation Sour ce Route Bridging Source Route Bridging operates by transmitting frames over a designated r oute. Unlike T ransparent Bridging, all devices in a Sour ce Route Bridged (SRB) network “know” the locations of other stations within the network.
Operation 3-4 Fle xible Netw ork Bus (FNB) The FNB consists of two dual FDDI networks, the FNB-1 and FNB-2, providing up to 400 Mbps of data bandwidth. These FDDI networks are 100% ANSI FDDI-compliant supporting SMT (version 7.3), MAC, PHY , and PMD standards.
3-5 Operation System Diagnostic Contr oller This diagnostic controller is composed of a Z-80 micr oprocessor and its supporting logic. The diagnostic controller is designed to contr ol the power-up se.
Operation 3-6 The i960 core pr ovides the SNMP pr otocol stacks, as well as support for industry- standard MIBs. Additionally , Cabletr on enterprise-extension MIBs are supported for each media type.
4-1 Chapter 4 LANVIEW LEDs The front panel LANVIEW LEDs, shown in Figur e 4-1, indicate the status of the module and may be used as an aid in troubleshooting.
LANVIEW LEDs 4-2 The functions of the two System Status LEDs, System Management Bus (SMB) and the CPU, are listed in T able 4-1. The functions of the FNB receive LED ar e listed in T able 4-2. The functions of the FNB transmit LED are listed in T able 4-3.
4-3 LANVIEW LEDs The functions of the T oken Ring Mac r eceive LEDs are listed in T able 4-4. The function of the T oken Ring Mac transmit LEDs ar e listed in T able 4-5.
LANVIEW LEDs 4-4 The function of the T oken Ring speed LEDs is listed in T able 4-7. T able 4-7. T oken Ring Speed LED Color State Y ellow 16 Mbs Off 4 Mps.
