Check that your Freestyle 1200 is complete. When you unpack, you should have: • Freestyle 1200 handset. • Freestyle 1200 base unit with telephone line cord attached. • Mains power adaptor plug. • W all mounting bracket with screws. • Remote access quick refer ence card.

Setting up 7 W arnings 1 Do not tr y to use any power supply other than the one provided. This may per manently damage your Freestyle 1200. 2 Y our Freestyle 1200 should not be fitted in wet or damp conditions, for example in a bathroom. Also, the handset should not be left out in the rain.
Setting up 8 7 Pl u g t h e p h o ne i nt o t h e BT s oc k et Y ou can now use the phone, store numbers in the memor y and change some of the settings as desired. As a r ule, placing the handset on the base unit over night will keep the batter y fully charged for all nor mal use.
For the best reception Tr y to avoid putting the telescopic aerial near other electrical appliances, fluorescent lights and large metallic objects such as cookers, radiators and garage doors as these may cause inter ference and reduce the quality of your calls.
10 T o end a call • Press the T ALK button. Or • Replace the handset on the base. T o receive a call When the phone rings: • If your handset is on the base unit, simply pick it up to answer the call. Or • If your handset is of f the base, press the T ALK button to answer the call.
Using your Freestyle 1200 telephone 11 T o adjust the speech volume During a conversation you can adjust the volume of the incoming caller: • Press the + button (on the side of the handset) to increase the speech volume. • Press the - button to decr ease the speech volume.
U s i ng t he memo r y t o st or e a nd d ial nu m b ers Y our Freestyle 1200 handset can store up to ten separate phone numbers. Y ou can then dial each number by pressing just two buttons. T o store a number in the memory • Press the QUICKDIAL button.
Using your Freestyle 1200 telephone 13 T o dial a stored number • Press the T ALK button. • Press the QUICKDIAL button. • Press the 0-9 location code under which the number you want is stored. The number is dialled automatically . T o store a number of more than 20 digits • Press the QUICKDIAL button.
Usi n g t h e Se cr e c y b u tt on During a call, you may want to say something to another person nearby without your caller hearing you. • Press the SECRECY button. The T ALK light flashes. Y ou can hear the caller , but they cannot hear you. • Ever y 7 seconds the handset beeps to let you know there is a call on hold.
Using your Freestyle 1200 telephone 15 Ending an intercom call • Press the INTERCOM button on the handset or base unit. Both INTERCOM lights on the handset and base unit go out. T o call the handset from the base unit At the base unit: • Press the INTERCOM button on the base unit.

Using your Freestyle 1200 telephone 17 T o insert a pause W ith some switchboards, after dialling the access code you may have to wait for a moment while the switchboard picks up an outside line. If so, press the REDIAL button to inser t a pause before keying in the telephone number .

Using your Freestyle 1200 answering machine 19 If the caller does not press 1 or 2 before leaving their message, neither of the mailboxes will be selected and the message will be recorded in the ‘standard’ answering machine mailbox. Re c o r d i n g y ou r ou tg o i n g m ess ag e Y our Freestyle 1200 has a preset outgoing message that callers will hear . Y ou can use this pr eset message or recor d your own message for a more personal greeting. T o listen to the outgoing message • Remove the batter y cover lid to access the appropriate buttons.
When the recor ding capacity is full, your caller hears: “ Tha nk y ou fo r ca lli ng. ” S ett i n g t h e da y a n d t i m e Y our Freestyle 1200 automatically adds the day and time to all messages and memos. When you switch on your Freestyle for the first time, the clock is set to Saturday 12:01.
S w i tching the an s we r ing m a chin e o n an d of f If you do not wish callers to leave a message, you can switch your answering machine of f. T o switch the answering machine on and off • Press the ANSWER ON/OFF button. The machine announces “ Answ e r O n” or “ Answ er Off ” accordingly .
R ecordi ng a memo Y ou can record a memo message onto your Freestyle 1200 to be played back later . Memos can be recor ded on the standard answer machine or in either of the two mailboxes. Memo messages appear on your Freestyle 1200’s display as incoming messages, so the message display will indicate that messages have been left.
Y ou can also set your Freestyle 1200 to beep when you have new messages. See ‘ M es sag e al er t ’ on page 27. T o play messages and memos • Press the PLA Y/P AUSE button. The machine announces the number of messages recor ded and then plays them.
T o skip forward and backwards through your messages During playback, you can skip backwards and for wards through your messages. Du r i ng pl a yb ac k: • Press and hold the ©© | button to fast for war d through your messages. The display shows FF .

Y ou can also listen at the handset by pressing the SCREEN button. Press the T ALK button on the handset to inter r upt the call and speak to the caller .
• Press the small speaker on the VOLUME button to lower the sound level. M es s ag e al er t When new messages have been received, your Fr eestyle 1200 will beep ever y 10 seconds. The volume of the beep is at the volume you have set for the loudspeaker .

Y our Freestyle 1200 has a security PIN code which must be entered when remotely accessing the answering machine. This ensures your messages are private and can be accessed only by the users who know the security code. Y our Freestyle 1200 answering machine has a preset security code of 000 .
Remote access 30 “ H ello , your ca ll ca nno t b e take n a t t he momen t a nd you ca nno t leav e a mes sa g e, so p le ase ca ll la ter . ” • Enter your security code to access the remote functions. Y ou will have to delete some of your messages after hearing them, if you want the answering machine to remain on.
Remote access 31 • If you enter the wrong security code the machine announces “ I n co r r ec t se cu r i t y co d e . P lea se en ter your secur i ty co d e. ” Y ou have another chance to enter the security code. If it is wrong a second time, the machine ends the call.
Cal l W a it i n g If an incoming call ar rives while you are alr eady engaged on a telephone cal,l you will hear a soft beep ever y 5 seconds (this beep is not audible to the person you are speaking to). Instead of the engaged tone, the second caller will hear an announcement to hold on as you are aware that ther e is a second call.
• When you have spoken to the second caller you can retur n to the first caller by pressing the CALL WAITING button again. Y ou can switch back and for th between the two calls without disconnecting either if you wish. • If you wish to disconnect the first call press the T ALK button after speaking to the first caller .
34 T o register an additional handset • Press an d h ol d the INTERCOM button on the base unit for 5 seconds. The base unit will beep and the IN USE light will flash. • When the IN USE light begins to flash, release the INTERCOM button and place the additional handset on the base unit.

Help 40 Answ e r mac h i ne pr ob l e ms P os s i ble c a u se S olu ti on • Will not record incoming messages. • Will not answer calls. The answering machine is switched of f. The answering machine is full. Switch the answering machine on manually or by remote control.
41 Official appr oval Y our Freestyle 1200 is tested and approved for connection to public networks, provided it is used in accordance with the guidelines in this user guide. You may connect it: • T o direct exchange lines. • T o extensions with new plug and socket ar rangements pr ovided with these direct exchange lines.
Technical information 42 Y ou may find that your Freestyle 1200 picks up conversations from other cordless phones being used nearby . If you experience this type of inter ference, tr y changing channels using the CHANNEL SEEKER button on the handset.
Technical information 43 • Don’t install the base unit near a sink, bath or shower . Electrical appliances can cause serious injur y if used when you ar e wet or standing in water . • Don’t install the base unit where the various leads can be tripped over or walked on.
44 • Fir mly hold the handset in both hands with the back towards you and the bottom end away from you. • Push the depression in the batter y compar tment cover , inward and away fr om you with both thumbs, to remove it. • Undo the plastic belt securing the batter y pack.
Maintenance 45 In the event of a power failure During a power failure, if you have fitted a fresh alkaline back-up batter y in the base unit, your telephone will continue to work for up to one hour in use or seven hours on standby .
Maintenance 46 Guarantee BT guarantees Freestyle 1200 for a year , provided that: • The goods have only been used for their intended purpose, and have not been subjected to misuse, or been wilfully or accidentally damaged. • The goods have not been tampered with or r epaired by anyone other than BT , its staf f or agents.
