1 Chapter 1 Introduction The DocuPrint C6 printer is a high quality, thermal ink jet printer des ign ed for both color and black and w hi te app lic ations. Fe aturing a c o mpact lightweight design, the printer is ideally suited for use in your office or at home.
2 Safety notes Your D o cuPr int C6 has b e en care fully designed to give you y ears of safe, reliable perform ance. A s w ith all electrical equipm ent, how ever, th ere are a few basic precautions y ou sh ould take to avoid h urting yourself or damaging the unit.
3 9. The use of an extens ion cord or pow er str ip with t his printer is no t recommended . I f you are using a n extension cord or p ower strip w ith the printer, make sure that the total of the amperes required by all of the equipment on the extension is less than the extension’s rating.

11 Control Panel Oper ation The DocuP rint C6 contro l p anel has one button and o ne light (LED). The Printer Co ntrol (green) button controls p rinter functions.
12 Printer Error Conditions LED Blinking Constant ly (0.5 sec On, 0.5 sec Off) A constantly blinking LED can indicate the following: • Low ink conditio n – P ress and release the Printer Cont rol button to center th e print head. R eplace the low ink cartridg e.
13 ( LED On Continuously ) • System Error – Press and ho ld the Printer Co ntrol button for at least 2 seconds. If the L ED begins to f lash, there is a sy stem error. Unplug th e pow er at the back of the un it for at least 10 seconds, then rein sert the pow er cord back into th e back of th e unit.

19 Chapter 3 Using the Printer Settings Using the DocuPrint C6 printer driver so ftw are, you can select from a variety of setting s w hen prin ting docu men ts. This chapter describ es the printer settings you can select and how to check the status of the docum ents sen t to the printer.
20 The Paper/Output Property Page The Paper/Output property page prov ides the follow ing settings: Copies Specifies the n umber of copies to print. T he valid range is 1 to 99. Orientation T hese radio buttons allow the user to select the paper o r ientation: Portrait (vertical orientation) or Landscape (ho r izo ntal orientation).
21 Collate Arranges, in sequential order, multiple copies of the sam e docum ent. Reverse print order Prints the document from the last page to the first page. Print document as • Intelligent color (graphics an d text): This op tio n is used for color pr inting.
22 Print quality Selects pr int quality f or current print job. Draft: For fastest p r inting. Resolu tion is 300 x 300 dpi. Speed is up to fo ur pa ges pe r minute (plain paper on ly.) Normal: For fast printing at letter quality speed. Resolution is 600 x 300 dpi.
23 To use the <Save As > button: 1. Select the settings you want on the Paper/Output , Page Layout , and Image Quality property pages. 2. On the Paper /Output propert y page, click the <Sav e As> button. 3. Type a name in the Save As dialog box .
24 The Page Layout Property Page The Page Layout property page enables y ou to print on e image on m ultiple pages. It also allo ws several pages to be printed on a sing le sheet. The graphic to the left of the control is upda ted to reflect your specific lay out selectio n.
25 Poster Num ber of sheets This determines h ow m any pages each orig inal imag e is expanded to. The list contains 4, 9, and 16. Print crop m a rks When checked, a black bor der will be printed at the edge of the printable area of each expanded page.

27 The features in Select Sheets are: < Clear > Deselects all the sh eets. T he dialog box remai ns open. < All > Selects all the sheets. The dialog box rem ains open. < OK > Saves the current selections and exits the dialog box . < Cancel > Exits without saving your selections.
28 Multiple-up option The Multiple-up feature enables placement of m ultiple imag es on one page/sheet. If y ou select Multiple-up on th e Page Layout property page, the foll o wing controls appear: Images per sheet T his selection determines how man y imag es are condensed and printed on one page.
29 < Defaults> This butto n will return controls on the Page Layout property page to their factory defaults. Mirror Image In the center of the Page Layout property page, is an icon and check box for Mirror Ima ge . T he printed image is flipped horizo ntally (left to right).
30 The Image Quality Property Page The Image Quality property page prov ides a large graph ic that estimates h o w Lighten/Dark en , Contrast , and Saturation of Red , Green , and Blu e aff ect the docum ent. (Howev er, the graphic does not chan ge w hen you select Im ageFix .
31 These are the Image Quality property page f eatures: Halftone type This field is informational only . The user cann o t directly select the type of halftone to use. The software selects the halftone based on the quality mode and print m ode selected on th e Paper/Output property page.
32 Red Move the Red scrollbar to the left or right to decrease or in crease the amount of red in your print. The large bitmap to the left ref lects these changes. This control is disabled w hen Print document as is set to Greyscale . Green Move the G reen scrollbar to the left or right to decrease or in crease the amount of green in your print.
33 The About Property Page This tab gives important information concerning the version of the soft ware and copy right dates . If y o u need assistance, please have y our software v ersion num ber available f or the Xerox Cus tom er Support Center wh en you call or e-m ail.
34 The Status Property Page The Status property page provi des y o u with printer statu s information, including the level of ink in the print cartridge(s). The Status propert y page also s hows th e progress of the current pri nt job. By def ault, t he Status prop e rty page op ens automatically w hile printing a docum ent.
35 If the printer is idle, you can check its status by clicking the <Start> button, pointing to Settings , and clicking Printers . Click the DocuPr int C6 icon with the right mouse button. With the left mouse button, click Show Status w indow (Window s 95/98 onl y).
36 Page Indicates which page is currently b eing printed and the to tal number of pages submitted for printing. Copy Indicates which copy is bein g print ed and the t otal num ber of copies requested. Percent com plete A progres s bar that indicates the percentage of the total jo b that has been sent to the printer.
37 The Maintenance Property Page The Maintenan ce property page prov ides you w ith print er maintenance capabilities. If the printer is idle, you can open the Maintenance propert y page by clicking the <Start> butt on, pointing to Settings , and clicking Printers .
38 All the buttons on the Maint enance property page are dis abled if a job is b e ing p rinted. The followi ng are the Maintenance property pag e features and settings: Inform ation area This area is at the top of the screen an d consists of an icon and a message area.
39 There are three choices for installing another print/ink cartridge: • Previously used print cartridge Select this option if you are installing a print ca rtrid ge you have used b efor e . • Color ink ca rtridge Select this option if you are replacing one or m ore of the indi vidual ink cartridges on the Color/P hoto pr int cartridge.
40 Clean Cleans the currently installed print cartridge. Before clickin g the <Clean> button, make sure th e printer is idle . Align Prints a test p attern that you can use to verify the optim um bi-directional alignment of the print head in the printer.
41 If none o f the patter ns has straight line s, then select the pattern that is the closest (this s hould be -4 or +4). Make s ure Print the Alignm ent Test Pattern is selected and then click <Align>. Wait for the alignment test page to print and look for the straigh test lines again.
42 Checking the documents in the print queue The DocuPrint C6 print queue show s the docum ents currently being printed or waiting to be p rinted. 1. To view the print qu eue, do one of the f o llowing: • Click the Windows <Start> button, point to Settings , and click Printers .
43 Chapter 4 Troubleshooting the printer This chapte r describes comm on printer problem s that m ay occur and prov ides the recomm ended solutions. Follow the suggested so lutions to c o rrec t the p rob lem. If the problem continues, contact Xerox Custom er Support.
44 The printed document does not match the selected printer settings Cause Suggested So lution Some softw are ap plications override the setting s selected on the DocuPrint C6 prop e rty pages. Choose the printer settings fro m the application. Previously selected printer settings are used to pr int the docum ent.
45 The printed document is blank Cause Suggested So lution There may be a problem w ith the print head, pr inter cab le, or your PC. Print a T est p rint by unplugging the pow er cord from the rear of.
46 Cause Suggested So lution • Rem o ve print head and then remove ink ca r tridge s. Check to see if they are empty . Check th e ink output an d pin hole vents o n the individ ual cartridges. Reinsert cartridges, making sure you hear a c lick, then reinstall print head.
47 The document prints slowly Cause Suggested So lution The Print quality is set to High quality . On the Paper/Output propert y page, set the Print quality to Draft or Normal . The Temp (Temporary ) Folder on your har d d r ive may contain too many files.
48 The document sent to the printer does not print Cause Suggested So lution The printer cab le is no t connected properly . Unplug th e power source. Make sure the printer cable is securely connected to the prin ter and your PC. Reconnect th e power source.
49 The Front Panel LED i s on conti nuousl y Cause Suggested So lution The printer is out of paper. Add paper to th e paper tray. Then, press and release the Printer Control (green ) button. The print head is not installed correctly. Press and release the Printer Control (green) button to center the print carriage.
50 An ink cartridge is em p ty, or the wrong brand of ink car tr idge is installed. Click the <Change> button on the Maintenance property page, and then follow the instructions to replace the ink cartridg e. An ink cartridge is not installed correctly.
51 The Front Panel LED i s bl inking slowl y Cause Suggested So lution There is a low ink condition. Install a new color / photo print head with new ink cartridges (see the Quick Start Guide). The Front Panel LED is blinking intermittently Cause Suggested So lution There is data in the buff er.
52 The p rint is blurry or jagge d vertical lines appear Cause Suggested So lution The paper used is not recomm ended for the printer. Certain papers (recy cled paper) may cause poor quality output. Best results will be achieved by usin g paper developed f or ink jet printers.
53 The printed image is clipped or off the edge of the media Cause Suggested So lution The documen t marg ins m ay exceed the printer m argins. Change the document margins in the application that y ou are using to be within the recomm ended printable area.
54 Extra characters, dashes, or lines appear on the printed pages Cause Suggested So lution The printer cab le is to o long. Use a printer cable that is less than six f eet long. Port Monitoring soft ware is active from a device previously connected to the prin ter (parallel) port.
55 White horizontal lines and streaks of the wrong color appear on the printed pages Cause Suggested So lution An ink cartridge is em p ty. Replace the ink cartridge. Click the <Cha nge> bu tton on Maintenance propert y page, and then follow the instructions on the Quick Start Guide for replacing the in k cartridge.
56 The print is faint or missing Cause Suggested So lution The paper used is not recomm ended for the printer. Certain papers (recy cled paper) may cause poor quality output. Best results will be achieved by usin g paper developed f or ink jet printers.
57 Ink is smeared on the printed pages Cause Suggested So lution The printer is p rinting outside the printable area. Change the document margins in the application that y ou are using to be within the recomm ended printable area.
58 The print quali ty of transparenci es i s poor Cause Suggested So lution The wrong type of transparen cies was u se d . Use transparencies m ade for ink jet pr inters o nly. Transpar ency is not selected for the Paper type option on the Paper/Output property page.
59 Color variations appear in large areas of color Cause Suggested So lution The print cartrid ge need s aligning. Align the print cartridge. Click the <Align> button on the Maintenance propert y page, and then follow the instructions display ed on the screen .
60 The paper is not feeding properly Cause Suggested So lution The paper is not co rrectly positioned b etween the paper guides. Align the left edge of the paper with the lef t p ap er guide. Slide the right p a per guid e lever until it rests lightly against the right edge of t he paper.
61 The paper does not stack neatly in the paper output shelf Cause Suggested So lution Ther e is not eno ugh clear ance above the paper ou tput shelf . Place a sheet of paper in th e paper output s helf. Check the clearance above th e top of the sheet; there should be two inches of clearance.
62 Packing the printer for return to a Service Center Should you need to return the printer for servicing, follow the packing instructions in this section o r follow the process as i nstru cted by the Xerox Custom er Support Center.
