Carefully remove the protective fo am from the ADF cover release, then press the release and open the Automatic Document Feeder cover .

DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 11 Installation • Full Inst all (OneT ouch, TW AIN and ISIS) —This is the recommended installation. It installs the One T ouch 4.0 software which provides the necessa ry driver software for the scanner . It also inst alls scanning interfaces for the TW AIN and ISIS drivers.
Installation 12 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide 4. Click Next . During inst allation you will see this window asking you to select one of the images for your Color S pace setting. The Color S pace set ting sets the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor .

Installation 14 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide S tep 4: Connect the USB Cable and T urn on the Power The DocuMate 262 scanner con nects to any availa ble USB port. Check your computer ’s manual for USB port location s. 1. Remove any protective t ape from the USB cable.

The status lig ht comes on and flashes indicating that the scanner is receiving power . If you are using Windows XP and have plugged the USB cab le into a USB 1.

Scanning 22 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning If you selected the recommended Full Insta ll option (see p age 1 1), then you have several dif ferent options to scan with your Xerox DocuMate 262 scanner . Each method scans equally well, so use the one with appropriate options f or the item you are scanning.
DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 23 Scanning Load and Scan Document s When you press either the Simplex or Duplex button, documents are scanned using the scan setting s indicated by the LED number . The scanned images are the n sent to a software ap plication (known as the Destination Application) on your computer .
Scanning 24 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide 3. Check the LED number to make sure you’re using the scan setting you want. T o choose a new scan setting, press the Destination Selector button. 4. T o scan a one-sided document, press the Simplex button.

T o check the scan settings before scannin g, press, hold down, and then release, either the Simplex or Duplex button . The One T ouch Properties window opens for you to view and change the settings before scanning.

Scanning 30 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide Configuring the One T ouch Buttons Each One T ouch button configuration consist s of a Destination Application , a Scan Configuration , and a Document Format . The One T ouch Properties window is where you select t hese three elements for a button.

Click OK or Apply on the One T ouch Properties window . When PaperPort opens af ter you finish scanning, the thumbnails of your scanned document s are on the Desktop in that folder .

Scanning 42 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide Create Single Image Files The TIFF and PDF formats su pport multiple page document s. If you are scanning as a TIFF o r PDF file and want one file created for each image scanned, select [Create single image files].

Choose the file size/image quality option for your scanned images. Minimize Size —Smallest file size, lowest image quality .

DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 45 Scanning Comma Delimited —The .csv file format; used for dat abase or spreadsheet data with field s separated by commas. When th e document is converted into edit able text by the OCR sof tware, the fields are maint ained so you can copy and p aste them to a database o r spreadsheet application.
Scanning 46 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide Renaming a One T ouch Button The One T ouch buttons have names that identify their pre-set functions, such as OCR and PDF , but you can edit the names. T o change the button names: 1. Open the One T ouch Properties window .

Scanning 48 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide • T ext Editors include Microsoft W ord and W ordPad, Microsoft Excel, and other word processing and spreadsheet applications. Select this option if you want OCR processing to convert your scanned document s to text that you can edit.

Although you can unlock and edit the preset confi gurations, we recommend that you leave them locked, and only add new configur ations. That way , you will always have the original fact ory-set configurations availab le.

Scanning 54 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide 8. Click the Advanced Settings tab. The options of the Advanced Settings t ab are for the Color or Grayscale scanning mode. Saturation is the strength or purity of a color , hue is the color your eyes see as reflecte d from the image, and gamma controls the brightness of the mid tones of the color .
DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 55 Scanning The Device Settings T ab A Device Settings t ab appears on the Scan Co nfigurations dialog box when your selected Destination Application sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or other device.

Scanning 62 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide Configure Before Scan Choosing Configure Before Scan simply opens a scan ning interface when you press or click a scan button. Y ou can then use the interface to ch ange the Resolution, Scan Mode, and other settings.

Click on the button you set to use the Configure Before Scan option. In the example shown on the previous p age, the scanning option 9 has been set to use Configure Before Scan.

DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 65 Scanning Scanning with Optical Ch aracter Recognition (OCR) Optical Character Recognitio n (OCR) is like a printer in reverse. Instead of printing what’ s on the screen onto p aper , OCR converts text and numbers on a scanned p age into edit able text and numbers.
Scanning 66 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide T o scan with OCR: 1. T o scan using the buttons on the scanner , press the Destination Selector until the LED is at 6, then press the Simplex or Duplex button.
DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 67 Scanning Scanning with sPDF or nPDF and Searching for T ext Searchable PDF (sPDF) and Normal PDF (nPDF) are special forms of an Adobe PDF file. sPDF converts scanned text into the PDF format with text search and OCR capabilities.

The One T ouch Properties window closes. 8. Now scan with that button and the scanned document will be in the sPDF or nPDF format that was selected for th e button.
DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 69 Scanning Scan and Burn to a CD If you have a CD burner att ached to your computer , you can scan directly from your Xerox DocuMate 262 scanner onto a CD. This feature is available only on computers running Windows XP or Windows V ista.

DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 71 Scanning Scanning with Event Forwarding If you want to specify an applicati on to use for scanning at the st art of the process, you can use ev ent forwarding. The scann er will feed in the first p age, but will then stop until you select the application to use.

DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Gui de 73 Scanning Creating an HTML Web Page from Y our Scanned Document s If you scan a document, whether a single p age or multiple pages, you can have the pa ges converted directly to HTML formatted pages for posting directly to your web site.

Y ou may also want to write down the address shown in the Address bar to make sure you ’ll know where to find your new HTML page later on.

The process is ideal for archiving document s without having to manually save or process them in any other way .
Scanning 76 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide T o T ransfer Document s to a Server or Mapped Drive When selecting the storage loca tion for scanned document s, you can select a local folder , or a folder on a server or mapped drive.Y ou select a mapped drive using the Browse button.

Scanning 78 DocuMate 262 Scanner User’s Guide Checking the Hardware and Se tting the Lamp Power Saving 1. Right-click on the One T ouch icon and choose Show Hardware from the pop-up menu. Y ou can also click the scanner icon at the top of the One T ouch Button Panel.

For example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned darker to im prove legibility .
