6 Introduction Compatib le discs When you want to pla y DVD or CD software or cop y programs from the HDD to a recor dable D VD, load an appropriate disc into the recor der . There are many types and f ormats of discs. Please use the f ollowing information to select an appr opriate disc.
7 Recording Playback Editing Library Function setup Others Introduction • Y ou cannot play discs other than those listed abo ve . • Y ou cannot play non-standardiz ed discs ev en if they may be labeled as abo ve. • Y ou cannot play discs with specialized encoding (such as SA CD discs) or the D VD audio por tions of D VD A udio discs.
8 Introduction On D VD-RAM discs Use only D VD-RAM discs that comply with D VD- RAM standard V ersion 2.0 or 2.1. The recorder cannot record on a disc formatted in any other standard. When using such a disc, initialize it by using the disc-f ormat function of this recorder.

10 Introduction Playback side On handling discs Do not touch the playback side of the disc. Do not stick paper or tape to discs . On c leaning discs Fingerpr ints and dust on the disc cause picture and sound deterioration. Wipe the disc from the center outwards with a soft cloth.

From this menu, y ou can access the desired functions while viewing a current picture.

26 This recorder is equipped with a b uilt-in HDD. Con ventional video cassette recorder s have required tapes to record, while this recorder enab les recording on the HDD whene ver you want, without selecting an av ailable tape or confirming its recording time or tape remaining.

T o play a D VD-R disc recorded on this recorder on other devices, finalize the DVD-R disc on this recorder .

39 Playbac k Recording Editing Function setup Other s Introduction Library Notes on recording fr om a connected VCR or camcorder Check the condition of the sour ce equipment before playing. Set the equipment in good condition, e.g. clean the head or adjust the tracking, etc.
40 Recording Pr ograming a recor ding (REC MENU) Use the REC MENU to program a recor ding. It will take less time to prepare, as it provides all necessary information f or recording, including estimated disc space remaining. For more information, see “ Bef ore recording ” ( page 26).

42 Programming a recor ding (REC MENU) (Continued) Recording Notes • The disc tra y does not close automatically , even when the recording start time arrives. Set the recorder loaded an av ailable D VD-RAM/R/R W disc beforehand. • It it not possible to record the same contents onto both the HDD and a D VD-RAM/R W/R disc simultaneously .
43 Playbac k Recording Editing Function setup Other s Introduction Library Shifting a time period of a recording (Time Shift) If a prior TV program extends be yond its scheduled time and into one that you programmed, you can shift the programmed start and end time of the recording.

45 Playbac k Recording Editing Function setup Other s Introduction Library Notes • When a Reservation disc ( page 49) is inserted in the recorder , you cannot check the remaining v olume of other discs. • The nearest 8 programs are calculated at a time.
46 Recording VCR Plus+ Recor ding Y ou can program a recording simpl y by entering the corresponding PlusCode ® n umbers. Preparation • Make sure that “ Time & date setting ” , “ Channel setting ” and “ Guide channel setting ” are set correctly ( page 28, “ INST ALLA TION GUIDE ” ).
47 Playbac k Recording Editing Function setup Other s Introduction Library Notes • The maximum timer prog ram capacity is 32. Any new progr am will be rejected if the recorder is full. T o enter a new program, you must cancel an existing one ( page 43).
48 Recording Other s Relay Recor ding This function automatically diverts a recording to the HDD if a D VD-RAM disc is near capacity . When the remaining time of the DVD-RAM disc has reached about 10 minutes, the recorder starts recording the same content on the HDD as well as D VD-RAM.
49 Playbac k Recording Editing Function setup Other s Introduction Library Reservation Disc ( “ Loc k program recor d ” ) This function is convenient when you wish to record multiple serial related programs on the same disc. The disc on which you write the reservation data is called “ Reservation Disc.

If you press the PLA Y button after stopping pla yback, playback resumes from the location you have stopped.

86 Bef ore editing Be sure to read before perf orming any editing. Editing For better use the HDD of this recor der When you save necessary scenes from recorded contents, it may not be a good method to delete unnecessary portions from a recorded title in the HDD, then copy the remainder to a DVD-RAM disc.
87 Editing Function setup Others Introduction Library Recording Playbac k Editing is ex ecuted by a title and a chapter . Titles and chapters are classified into “ Original ” and “ Pla ylist. ” First, specify a desired scene by dividing a title (Original) into chapters.
88 Before editing (Contin ued) Editing These vir tual titles or c hapters are called “ Title (Playlist) ” or “ Chapter (Pla ylist) ” respectiv ely . In order to diff erentiate titles (Playlist) from titles (Original), an Original is displa yed on screen as “ ORG ” and a Pla ylist is displayed as “ PL ” .
89 Editing Function setup Others Introduction Library Recording Playbac k Make the compiled chapters into a title (Original). (Dubbing) If you just want to play the compiled chapters in desired order , you only pla y the Playlist.
90 Creating c hapter s A recording makes 1 title, which includes 1 chapter . By dividing it into several chapter s, it will be easier to access a desired scene, and your editing or pla yback will be much easier . 1 During stop, playbac k or recording, press CONTENT MENU .
91 Editing Function setup Others Introduction Library Recording Playbac k 4 Press / to select “ Chapter function ” , then press ENTER. The Submenu appears. 5 Press / to select “ Chapter editing ” , then press ENTER. The EDIT MENU Chapter Editing display appears.
92 7 At a point where y ou want to make a chapter division, press P A USE. The picture pauses. 8 Press / / / to select “ Divide, ” then press ENTER. A chapter division is created at the selected location, and the first scene of the new chapter is registered as a chapter thumbnail.
