xi About this manual This manual explains how to manage color output on the T oshiba GA-1121, and provides information on cali bration and color profiles. This manual is part of a set of doc umentation that i ncludes manuals for users and system administrators.

1 1-1 Managing color on the GA-1121 The followi ng sections describe the options av ailable from the ColorWise color management system and explains how to customiz e the color settings for your particular needs.
1 1-2 GA-1121 Color Management control the printing of these mixed-colo r documents with features that apply specifically to R GB, CMYK, or spot colo r data.
1 1-3 Managing color on the GA-1121 Y ou can specify settings for the following op tions by selecting pr int options when you send a job to the GA-1121. Some can also be set as defaults by the administrator dur- ing GA-1121 Setup or using ColorWise P ro T ools.
1 1-4 GA-1121 Color Management Enable Trapping On/Off Sp ecify whether or not the job auto matically traps text and graphics independently of their a pplication. T rapping is intended to corr ect the misalignment of solid tints in CMYK im ages. This option is only available with the P ostScript driver .

1 1-7 Managing color on the GA-1121 Rendering Style The Rendering S tyle option specifies a CRD for color conversions. T o control the appearance of images, such as prints from office applications or R GB photographs from Adobe P hotoshop, select the appropri ate Rendering Style.
1 1-8 GA-1121 Color Management N OTE : The rendering styles associated with the PCL driver do not match those associated with the P ostScript driver . Pure Black T ext/Gr aphics The Pure Black T ext/Graphics option affects the printout for bl ack text and vecto r graphics on a page.
1 1-9 Managing color on the GA-1121 see the application notes. Also, black text and line art defined as RGB = 0, 0, 0 in office applications (such as Micros oft W ord) are converted to single-color black (CMYK = 0%, 0%, 0%, 100%) by the Microsoft P ostScript Level 3 driver for Windows 2000/XP .
1 1-10 GA-1121 Color Management • With B lack Overprint Off , the border of the text or text/g raphics is on an edge that has cyan and magenta toners on one side (ou tside the text) and black toner on the other side (inside the text). This transition may cause visible artifacts because of the practical limitations of the copier/printer.
1 1-11 Managing color on th e GA-1121 • On —The GA-1121 uses a built-in table or , with the Spot-On (available as Option), the Spot-O n color dictionaries (see page 3-18 ) to generate the best matches of the P ANT ONE colors that you r copier/pr int er can produce.
1 1-12 GA-1121 Color Management • Other allows y ou to specify custom R GB source settings. I f you choose O ther as the R GB Source P rofile setting, you must choo se settings for the Gamma, Phosphors, and White P oint options. • Sources 1-10 specify the definitions you download as R GB source profiles.
1 1-13 Managing color on th e GA-1121 If you are printing with the P ostScript driver from a Windows computer and have T wo-W ay Communication enabled, the name of each downloaded or custom profile is represented in the CMYK Simulation P rofile setting menu.
1 1-14 GA-1121 Color Management • Full (Source GCR) provides a comp lete and accurat e simulation based on colorimetric transformations. H ues are pr eserved, even for primar y colors. The Gra y C o m p on e n t Replacement (GCR) level that was s pecified in the original (source) document is also preserved.

2 2-1 An o vervie w of ca libr ation Calibrating the GA-1121 ensures consistent , reliable color output. This chapter explains how calibration works and pro vides instructions for all calibration procedures.
2 2-2 Color Calibration N OTE : The procedures described i n this chapter are fundamentally the same for Windows and M ac OS computers. The main di fferences ar e the inter face cable and the port used to connect to the measurement in strument. The illustrations in this chapter describe the Windo ws version.
2 2-3 Under standing calibration Calibration allows you to: • Maximize the color reproduction capabilities of the GA-1121 . • Ensure consistent color quality ov er time. • P rodu ce consistent output across GA-1121 ser vers. • Achieve better co lor matches when reproducing spot colors , such as P ANTONE colors or other named color systems.
2 2-4 Color Calibration T o create a measurement file, print a page of color patches. Then measure the patches using either a color measurement instrument connected to a com puter on the network or , if it is available, the print device ’ s scanner .
2 2-5 Using Calibrator All these pages include fully saturated color patches and pa le tints of cyan, magenta, yellow , and black. Images with skin tones o ffer a very good basis for comparison. Save and compare pages you printed at different ti mes. If ther e is a noticeable change in appearance, calibrate the GA-112 1.

Start ColorWise Pro T ool s and connect to the GA-1121. F or instructions on configuring the co nnection to the GA-1121, see the Use r S of t w a re Installation G uide .
2 2-7 Using Calibrator The Calibration window appears in S t andard mode. 3. Use the Calibrator windo w to perform the calibration method of y our choice. P rocedures for each calibration method are described in subsequent section s of this chapter . Expert Mode Calibrator provides two modes: Standar d Mode and Expert M ode.
2 2-8 Color Calibration With the P rint P ages option, print a calibr ation Comparison P age showing the results of the new measur ements with any profile associated with the currently selected calibration set. Y ou can also create a custom comparison page and save it as a P ostScript or E ncapsulated P ostScript (EPS) file called CALIB.
2 2-9 Using Calibrator When more than one profile uses the same target, an additional menu called Plot Against appears in the up per-righ t corner of the dialog box. I t lists all output profiles that use that same calibration set. Selecting an output profile from this menu displays the target curves associated with that profil e.
2 2-10 Color Calibration T O R ESTORE DEFAULT CALIBR ATION MEASUREMENTS 1. In the main Calibrator windo w , click Restore Device . 2. Click OK to restor e the preset default calibr ation set. N OTE : Restore Device applies only to the curr ently selected calibration set.
2 2-11 Using the EFI Spectr ometer ES-1000 The following illustration shows the different parts of the ES-1000. Calibrating the G A-1121 with the ES-1000 Y ou can use ColorWise P ro T ools in conjunction with the ES-1 000 to calibrate the GA-1121. T O CALIBR ATE THE G A-1121 USING THE ES-1000 1.
2 2-12 Color Calibration 5. Choose the appr opriate options and clic k Print. F or P age T ype, choose either 21 or 34 Sort ed P atches, or 21 or 34 Randomiz ed P atches. Sorted patches are printed on the pa ge in the order of their hue and satura tion levels.
2 2-13 Using the EFI Spectr ometer ES-1000 The Information dialog box appears. 9. Place the ES-1000 in t he calibration cradle , and click OK. The EFI S pectrometer Measur em ent dialog bo x appears. Directions for measuring the strips appear in the S tatus field.
2 2-14 Color Calibration 14. Repeat step 10 through step 13 until all the strips have been measur ed. N OTE : Y ou must take the measurements in th e or der outlined in the S tatus field. 15. When all the pat ches hav e been r ead successfully , click Accept.
2 2-15 Using the EFI De ns itometer ED-100 Calibrating the G A-1121 with the ED-100 Y ou can use ColorWise P ro T ools in conjunction with the ED -100 to calibrate the GA-1121. T O CALIBR ATE THE G A-1121 USING THE ED-100 1. Start Calibrator . F or instructions on star ting Ca librator , s ee page 2- 6 .
2 2-16 Color Calibration 6. Retriev e the measurement pa ge fr om the copier/printer. 7. Click Measure in the Get Measur ements pane . The M easurement Options dialog box appears. 8. Choose the appr opriate opti ons , and then click Start. P age T ype is automatically set to the me asurement page type that you pr inted in step 5 .
2 2-17 Using the EFI De ns itometer ED-100 When you click S tart, the Measurements wi ndow appears. Directions for measuring the patches appear in the Status area. 9. Place the ED-100 ov er the specified patch on the Measurement P age , making sure to center the sample aperture o ver the patc h.
2 2-18 Color Calibration When the patch has been measured successfully , a check mark appears in the patch preview in the Measur ements window . The wi ndow identifies and highlights the next patch to be measured. 10. Repeat step 9 to measure each successiv e patch on the Measurement P age.
2 2-19 Calibrating the GA-1121 with the DTP41 Calibrating the G A-1121 with the DTP41 U sing the ColorWise P ro T ools Cali brator application and the DTP41 spectrophotometer , you can quickly measure color patches generated by the copier/printer and automatically downlo ad these measurements to the GA-1121.

2 2-21 Calibrating the GA-1121 with the DTP41 10. Insert the measur ement page into the DTP41, starting wit h the cy an strip. F ollow the on-screen instructions to align the page properly . 11. Click Read Strip. The DTP41 pulls the measurement page through automatically .
2 2-22 Color Calibration A check mark appears on the circle of the color just read, and the Status field indicates the color was measured successfully .

2 2-24 Color Calibration 9. When the Status field indicates that the measurements were r ead successfully , click Accept. 10. Click OK in the Measure dialog box. 11. Click Apply in the Calibrator window to implement the new calibr ati on set. 12. Click OK in the Information dialog box.
2 2-25 Using A utoCal and ColorCal Calibrating with ColorWise Pr o T ools and AutoCal, or ColorCal When you run ColorCal from ColorWise P ro T ools, you have the option to calibrate the copier/printer’ s scanner before calibrat ing the GA-1121 itself.
2 2-26 Color Calibration If you chose the ColorCal method, an alert message appears, asking if you want to calibrate the copier/printer’ s scanner . 10. If you ar e using ColorCal and want to calibrate the scanner , click Y es. 11. Choose the Inpu t Tr ay to use for the sca nner measure m ent page and click P r int.
2 2-27 Using A utoCal and ColorCal 15. Follow the dir e ctions in the dialog bo x for placing the Gr ay Scale strip and the measurement page on the copier/p rinter glass. Click Continue . 16. Click Continue in th e Calibrator Informat ion dialog box (on your Windo ws or Mac OS computer).
2 2-28 Color Calibration 4. For Cali brati on Mode , choose St andard or Expert, and press Set. With Expert M ode, you can print a Comparison P age (see page 2-7 ). 5. For Measur ement Method, choose AutoCal or ColorCal, and pr ess Set. 6. For T ray , choose the paper source f or the patch page and pr ess Set.
2 2-29 Using A utoCal and ColorCal 12. Place the color measurement page f ace-down ov er the grayscale strip. Place the page at the upper-left corner of the copi er/printer glass. Slide the grayscale strip to the top center of the color measurement page.
2 2-30 Color Calibration T O REMOVE CALIBRATION FROM THE C ONTR OL P ANEL 1. From the GA-1121 Contro l P anel, access the Calibration menu as descri bed on page 2-27 . 2. Choose Remov e Calibration. 3. When prompted, verify that you want to proceed with remo vin g calibration.
3 3-1 Designed to give you flexible control of color printing, ColorWise P ro T ools include the following color management tools: • Calibrator (see Chapter 2 ) • Color Editor • P rofile Manager.
3 3-2 ColorWise Pr o T ools Pro file Manager P rofile Manager allows you to manage and edit ICC profiles. I n the case of the GA-1121, these profiles ar e divided into R GB Source, Simulation, and O utput profiles: • RGB Source contains all monitor profiles r esident on the GA-1121.
3 3-3 Profile Manager In addition, one or mor e output profil es are provided with the GA-1121.F or information about output profiles, see pag e 1-15 . N OTE : When you use Pr ofile Manager from some Windo ws NT computers, the default color director y may not be created automatically when ColorWise Pro T ools are installed.
3 3-4 ColorWise Pr o T ools A small icon to the left of a profile name in dicates the default profile for each category (R GB Source, Simulation, and Output). If you designate a different profile as the default, the icon appears next to y our designated profile.

3 3-6 ColorWise Pr o T ools F or Mac OS computers, this profile must be associated with one of the predefined names (Source-1 through Source-10 for R GB Source, Simulation-1 through Simulation-10 for Simulation, or Output-1 through Output-10 for Output) or set as the default before it can be used.
3 3-7 Profile Manager 4. Click OK when you ar e notified that the pro file was successfully uploaded. Delete profiles to ensure that the wrong profiles ar e not used, and to free up disk space on the GA-1121 (although profiles ar e small and do not take up much s pace).
3 3-8 ColorWise Pr o T ools T O DEFINE A CUSTOM SIMULATION PRO FILE 1. Start Colo rWise Pro T ools and click Profile Manager . F or the purposes of this example, assume DIC-new is a custom simulation profile created with Color Editor and, as such, no i nformation is displayed for DIC-new under the heading “ Appear in Driver as.
3 3-9 Profile Manager N OTE : Although you cannot delete a preset pr ofile, you can use the name of a pr eset profile name for your edited pr ofile when you select the “ Appear in Driver as ” option. This replaces the pr eset profile with your own profile.
3 3-10 ColorWise Pro T ools If you do not define a custom simulation profile, your job will print with CMYK Simulation P rofile set to N one. If you do not define a cus tom R GB Source or Output profile, the default profile is used.
3 3-11 Color Editor Color Editor also has several Ed it Modes for editing simulations: • Master —Cr eate a custom master simulation that affects all print jobs to which it is applied, unless a linked simulation exists for the selected combination of simulation profile, simulation method, and output profile.
3 3-12 ColorWise Pro T ools 3. Choose a pro file to edit and click Select. Another method is to open the P rofile Manage r , select a profile, and then click Edi t. 4. For a simulation profile , choose Master f rom the Edit Mode menu. For an output pro file, choose Cus tom from the Ed it Mode menu.
3 3-13 Color Editor 5. Select the colors you want to edit by turning colors o ff an d on. The E ye icon to the left of each color indi cates whether that color is visible on the graph and will be a ffected by changes to th e cur ves, brightness, and dot gain contro ls.
3 3-14 ColorWise Pro T ools If you use Dot Gain values, apply the setting s first, so that the curves are deflected from their straight-line positions. Then make edits to the new curves. When you adjust Dot Gain values, all existing points on the curve are remov ed.
3 3-15 Color Editor N OTE : Y ou should adjust points in this way only after you have entered the Dot Gain and Brightness values. F or g reater precision, type percentages in th e Input and O utput fields or use the arro w keys on the keyboard to adjust the cur ve.
3 3-16 ColorWise Pro T ools T O EDIT A SIMULATION IN Q UICK , F ULL (S OURCE GCR), OR F ULL (O UTPU T GCR) MODE 1. Start ColorWise Pr o T ool s and click Color Editor . 2. Choose Simulation fr om the Vie w menu, select the simulation profile to edit, and then click Select.
3 3-17 Color Editor 4. Edit and save the simulati on, as described in steps 5 through 10 of the pr ocedure starting on page 3-13 . F or this new simu lation to be automatically applied to a print job, the CMYK Simulation, Simulation M ethod, and Output Pr ofile settings must be the same as those used when you edited the profile.
3 3-18 ColorWise Pro T ools T O CHECK A PR OFILE 1. Click T est Print from the Color Editor windo w . 2. Select a page to print. If you selected Comparison P age , choose a paper size . If you selected Sample Image P age , choose an output profile . Th en click Prin t .
3 3-19 Using Spo t-On T O START S POT -O N 1. Start ColorWise Pr o T o ols and click Spo t-On. 2. Choose the desired output pr ofile and click OK. The S pot-On main windo w appears. The CMYK values you se e in the window ar e calculated with respect to the specified profile.
3 3-20 ColorWise Pro T ools By default, the GA-1121 includes several P ANTONE libraries along with a System library . These factor y default libraries appear marked with the default group icon () . Y ou can also add custom color groups and colors to the S p ot-On window (see page 3-23 ).
3 3-21 Using Spo t-On When you open a group, all colors in th e group are displayed, and the group icon changes appearance. 2. T o close a color group, click the icon to th e left of the gr oup name, or double-click the blank area to the right o f the name .
3 3-22 ColorWise Pro T ools T O REA R RA N GE THE PRIORITY OF COLORS 1. T o rearr ange an entire color gr oup, select the desir ed color gr oup. T o rearrange an individual co lor , select the desired colo r . Individual spot colors are mar ked with circular color icons.
3 3-23 Using Spo t-On 3. T o find additional colors based on the sam e search criteria, cho ose Find Again fr om the Edit menu. Creating custom color s S pot-On provides a number of default colo r groups, such as P ANTONE and DIC, in the color list. Y ou can add your own custom spot colors and groups to the list.
3 3-24 ColorWise Pro T ools Downloading custom color gr oups Y ou can download custom color groups from your computer to the GA-1121. Download ed groups are added as custom groups to the S pot-On color list and ar e enabled immediately for use on the GA-1121.
3 3-25 Using Spo t-On T O UPLOAD CUSTOM COLOR GROUPS 1. Select the name of the color group y ou want to upload. 2. Choose Upload from the File m enu. The Save A s dialog box appears. 3. Brow se to the location where you w ant to save the file , name the file, and then click Save .
3 3-26 ColorWise Pro T ools 2. T o update the center patch to a neighb oring color that more closely matches the target, click the corresponding neighbor patch. N eighboring patches represent variations from the center patch and can be selected if they offer a closer match to the desired colo r .
3 3-27 Using Spo t-On Saturation generates neighbor patches base d on less saturated to more saturated variations of the original color . This variation is displayed from left to right, with the original color remaining in the center of the middle group.
3 3-28 ColorWise Pro T ools 6. Click OK to print the patches. The P rint Pattern test page prints the follo wing inform ation: • Center patch color CMYK value • Color spacing • Lightness or Satu.
3 3-29 Using Spo t-On The Device Codes option allows you to en ter color values between 0 and 255. This option reflects the full range of color va lues that the GA-1 121 can actually reproduce, and pro vides finer gradations of colo r than are possible with P ercentag es.
3 3-30 ColorWise Pro T ools 4. Place the ED-100 or ES-1000 over the tar get color , making sure to center the sample aperture o ver the color . Press Measure to take the measur ement. The measured CMYK values ar e imported into Spot-O n as follows: • If an individual color is selected in the color list, it updates to the measured color .
3 3-31 Color Setup Color Setup U s e Color Setup to set the default ColorWis e settings for the GA-1121. T o access Color Setup , click its icon in the ColorWise P ro T ools main window . Setting default ColorWise options Color Setup allows you to configure the default color management settings for the GA-1121.
3 3-32 ColorWise Pro T ools Once you have made your ch anges, you mu st click OK or Apply for the changes to take effect. Clicking OK sets the new defaults and closes the Color Setup window . Clicking Apply sets the new defaults an d keeps the Color Setup windo w open.
A A-1 Color Measurement Instruments This appendix explains ho w to set up and cali brate the following color measur ement instruments: • X-Rite DTP41 automatic scanning spectrophotometer • X-Rite .
