1 Genera l Description 1.1 Introduction This manual c ontains field an d factory level s ervicing i nfor mation for the Texas Inst r u ments Ex tensa 57x Series of Notebook Compute rs (Figur e 1-1). This se ction pro vi des a gener a l overview a nd specifica t ions for t he Extens a 57x Series Notebook Computers.

1.4 Product Overview All members of the Extensa 57x Se ries are hig h per for manc e notebooks powered by th e Penti u m Processo r a nd W indows 95 O pe rating Syst em software . As a standard feature, all members of the Extensa 57x family also contain the followi ng features: • 100 MHz Pentium Processor with 16K Inte rnal Cache Memory.
• AC Adap te r wi th autosensing (1 00 VAC to 240 VAC , 50 to 60 Hz) ; 36 Watts of DC output pow er. • 8.4 Volt, 4200 mAH capacity , Nickel -Metal Hydrid e (NiMH) pr imary batter y pack . • Provisions for secondary 10.8 Volt Lithi um-Ion Battery Pack in Floppy Drive cav ity (if F loppy Drive or C D ROM Player not installed ).
1.4.1 Exter nal Ports As shown in Figur e 1-3, the note book computer contai ns the fol lowing exter nal ports: • Serial Infrare d (SIR) Port for wirel ess connecti on with a simi larly equipped pri.
1.4.2 Glidep ad Pointing Device All members of the Extensa 57x famil y feature a buil t-in gl idepad pointing device located ne ar the center of the key board’s palmrest. With light finger pressure, th e cursor can qui ckly be positioned to the desired point; a qui ck double t ap on the g lidepad and you h ave se lected an ob ject.

1.4.5 Wi reless Connect ion W ith Ser ial In frared Port The Extensa Se ries notebooks are e quipped with a Serial Infrare d (IR) port that of fers wire less commun ication w ith a variety of IRDA compliant devices made by other manufacturers.
1.5 Standard T est Features The Extens a Series Notebook Computers use modular des ign and built- in test featur es to reduce th e mean time to r epair . A power on se lf test program automaticall y verifies the operational state of the primary ci rcuits.
1.6.1 Cover -Display Assembly The C o ve r -Disp l ay A ssembly co n tains the LC D screen a nd ass ociated h igh volta g e power su p ply and vid eo circuitr y .
1.6.2 System Ba se Assembl y As shown in Figur e 1-6, the majority of the notebook’s field replacea ble units ( FRUs) are locate d in the system b ase assemb ly.

2 Installation 2.1 Introduction This se ction con tains unp acking a n d prepara t ion for use inst r u ctions fo r the Exte nsa 57x Serie s Notebook Compute rs. 2.2 Unpacking Instructions Unpack the comput er using the following instruction s: 1. Carefully cut the tape that seal s the top flap of the s hipping carton .
1 . Ensure th at the notebook is powered of f an d that the AC Adapter and internal battery pac k( s) is (are) r emove d from the no te book. 2 . Remov e the Expansion RAM Module (Dual Inline Me mory Module or DIMM) from its s hipping cont ainer . 3 .

2.5.1 Installing an Exter na l Keyboard/Mouse As shown in Figur e 2-2, th e notebook has one exter n al PS/2 port on t he rear of the Notebook for installi ng a PS/2 compatible device (keyboard, mouse , etc.). Ad d i tion al PS/2 device s may be inst alled using th e Por t Expander option.
To i nstall an exter nal key board or exte r nal PS/2 mous e on the n otebook, use the following proce dure: 1. Ensure th at the notebook is powered of f. 2. Locate the exter nal PS/2 port at the rear of the note book (refer to Figure 2- 2) . 3. Attach th e PS/2 cable from your mouse and/or keyboard cable to the PS/2 port.
2.5.2 Installi ng Exter na l Paral lel Prin ter The No te book is equi pp ed with a bidirect ional, ECC/EPP c ompatible, 25 -p in parallel pri nter port.
2.5.3 Installing Exter nal Serial Por t Device The notebook contains an RS- 232 serial port with a male DB-9 connector as shown i n Figure 2-4. The serial ports are us ed to interconne ct such devices.
2.5.4 Installing External SVGA Monitor The note book is cap abl e of driving b oth its internal LCD di sp lay and an exter nal SVGA monitor (LCD only, simul taneous, or SVGA on ly). The external mo n i to r conne ctor pino u t s and conn ec tor locat ions are sho wn in Figure 2-5.
2.5.5 Installing SIR Device s The Serial Infrared (IR) port of fers wire less communic ation with a varie ty of IRDA-compliant devi ces made by other manufac turers. Ensure that the third-part y man u fact ur er su p p lies yo u wi th th e appropriate IR drivers before attempting c onnecti on.
2.6 Installing the AC Power Adapter Use th e followin g proced ures to conne ct the AC Adap ter to the sy stem: c Caution: Use only the AC Adap ter supplied with the comp uter; o ther adapters can damage the unit. 1. Remove th e AC adap ter from the pac kaging.
Upon s uccessfu l conclusio n of self te st, the co mput er autom atica l ly loads its oper ating sy stem and W indows environm en t. If self te st fails t o comp lete and an err or message is dis played, try powering down the computer for a couple of minutes and tur ning powe r back on to repeat self test.
3 Operating Instructions 3.1 Introduction This se ction desc ribes the Ex tensa 57x Series No t ebook op erating c o ntrols and indi cat ors. n Note: For additional operating ins tructions, refer to the Ext e nsa 57 x Se ries Noteboo k Compu ter Users Guide.
3.2.1 LCD Contrast Cont rol The TFT version of the note book contains no operating c ontrols or indicators . Use the functi on keys to adjust the c ontrast and brightness.
• Insert the fl oppy into the floppy drive s lot with th e label side up and th e metal-s hutter end first. Gentl y push the fl oppy into the floppy drive s lot until t he floppy clicks in to place. • To remove a floppy diskette , press the e ject button until the fl oppy pops out.
3.3.2 Installing/Removing PCMCIA Options PCMCIA car ds are inse rted and e jected in much the sa me way as di skettes: • Up to two Ty pe I or Type II PC MCIA options may be ins talle d in the compartment on the right side of the notebook. One Type III Opt ion may be inst alled in th e lowe r slot.
3.3.6 Recharging the Ba ttery Pa cks A standalone battery c harger option is availabl e to charge notebook battery packs. Th e b attery packs may also b e charged in the notebook as fo l low s: 1 . Instal l the batte ry pack(s ) in your compute r (if not alr eady ins talled) .

4 Theory of Operation 4.1 Introduction This se ct ion describ es th e note bo o k theory of ope ration. 4.2 Notebook Functional Description Functi onally, th e notebook computer con sists of the follo.
DRAM memory, 128 bytes of CMOS RAM (battery backed up) and 256 KB of Flash RO M for syst em a n d video BIO S stor a g e. The basic 8 MB memory sy stem can be expanded to a maximum of 40 MB by the addition of two DIMM memory modules (refe r to Section 6 for insta llati o n d etails).

4.2.9.4 DC-DC Conver ter/Batter y Charger Circuit The p o we r supply b oard incl u d e s two DC-D C Conver ter ci rcuits an d a battery chargi ng circuit that operate the notebook and charge the inter nal batteri es when the AC Adapte r is attach ed to the not ebook.

5.3.2 T roubleshooting a Displa y Problem If the LCD remains bl ank when you tur n on th e computer , and the status ICONs li ght on th e Status dis play pane l above the k eyboard, che ck the followi.
• Faulty ph one line - Conn ect a telephone to th e line an d listen for a dial tone. • Software program - Check to ens ure that you have install ed the softwa re correctly. • I/O Addres s Confl ict - Th e multimed ia sound capa bility of the Ext ensa uses I/O address 220.

5.3.5.3 Running PC-Doctor PC-Doctor is a DOS-resi dent program that can be run from ei ther hard disk or from th e bootable di skette you p reviousl y create d. 1 . From th e C: pr ompt chang e direc tory (type CD C:PCDR ) and press Enter . 2 . The Diagnostic s Program loads into system me mory, and the LCD display s the di agnostic s Header .
6 Field Service 6.1 Introduction This se ction con tains prev en tive and co r r ecti ve maintenan ce procedu r es for the Extens a 57x Series Notebook Computers. The firs t part of the section descri bes the comp uter clean ing proc edures and p referred handlin g procedures for sensi tive components (e.
6.2.3 Handling t he Comp uter Bat tery Pac k The battery pack fur nished wi th the computer r equires reasonable car e and handling to ensure ef fici ent operation and maximum life . Periodically inspe ct the b attery te r minals and the b atteries for eviden ce of corrosi on and oxid e b uild-up; clean if ne cessary.
c Caution: All boards , op tions and peripherals contain components that are sensitive to static electricity. When handling any of these items, protect against static electricity by using wrist or ankle grounding straps and grounded wo rking mats. When moving or sto ring items , use the anti-static bags supplied with the items.

6.5 FRU Removal and Replacement Procedur es The followi ng paragraphs contain field servi ce-level re moval/repl acement procedures fo r th e Note bo o k . c Caution: Prior to remo ving any of the internal FRUs in the notebook, remove the AC Ad apter , battery, floppy and hard drives and all external options installed on the no tebook.
3. The floppy drive as sembly can be furthe r disassembled by removing the Ph il li ps-head screws from the si des of t he floppy drive ass e mbly ; lifting of f the cove r and lifting out the floppy drive and cable conn ec to r (ZIF co n ne ctor ty pe ).
6.5.5 Removing/Repl acing the Keyboard Ass embly The procedur e for removing and r eplacing the keyboard assembly is as follows: 1 . Po we r th e notebook off ; disconn ect the AC Adapt er from the n otebook (if attached) and remove the b a tt ery pac k (s) as des cribe d i n P a ragrap h 6.
6.5.6 Remo ving/Replacing the Display Assembly To ac cess FRUs i n the display ass embly, remove th e display asse mbly as descr ibed i n the followi ng pr ocedure: 1. Remove the keyboard assembly as des cribed in Paragraph 6.5.5. 2 . Lean th e LCD partially back (do not l ean the LC D completely back as it may cause the LCD status cover to bi nd).
6 . Lift the s tatus LCD assembly out of t he unit. 7 . Reinstal lation of the s tatus LCD assembly is the r everse of Ste ps 1 through 6 . 6.5.8 Remo ving/Replacing the T op Case As sembly To r emove and replace the top case assembl y assembly, per for m the followin g proced ure: 1 .

6.5.15 Remo ving/Replacing Inverter Board To r emove and replace the inverte r board assembly, per for m the fol lowing proced ure: c Caution: Prior to remo ving the LCD bezel, ensure that the AC adapter is disconnected and that all internal battery packs are remo ved.

B.5 PC-Doctor Menus There are several selectio ns available from the menu bar of the PC-Doctor Diagnostics main menu. These include: • Diagnostics • Interactive Tests • Hard wa re I nfo • Utility • Quit B.5.1 Online Help (?) To obtain contex t sensitive help fr om any menu, press F1 .
PC-Docto r prod uces a test resu lt file at the end o f testing if an erro r was detected. • Switch LCD - lets you change your video o utput to eit her the inter nal LCD, exter nal monitor , or SimulSCAN mode. If your system do es not sup port SimulSCAN, both the exter nal monitor and t he built-in LCD screen go blank.
• IRQ and DMA u se - identifies interrupts f or all standard IRQ and DM A devices • Device Drivers - shows all essential data on DOS resident and installable device drivers • COM and LPT ports - displays informat ion abo ut the installed serial and parallel po rts.
B.6 Quitting PC-Doctor Y ou can quit P C-Doctor in the following ways: • Exit (Alt-F4 ) - • Reboot - performs a co ld boot . PC-Doct or flushes all files and attemp ts to flush write-caches • Park HD - pr epares a comp uter for transport B.
