1 Genera l Description 1.1 Introduction This manual c ontains field an d factory level s ervicing i nfor mation for the Texas Inst r u ments Ex te nsa 51x Se ries of Notebook Compute rs (Figur e 1-1). 2 Installation 2.1 Introduction This se ction con tains unp acking a n d prepara t ion for use inst r u ctions fo r the Exte nsa 51x Serie s Notebook Compute rs. 2.2 Unpacking Instructions The packagin g diagram for the n otebook computer is shown in Figur e 2-1.
3. Release the Key board by pulling the keyboard re lease tabs forward (tabs are lo cated u nderneath the C trl and rig ht arrow keys). 4. Disen gage the Keyboar d using a strai ght blade scr ewdriver and ge ntly lifting up alon g the front edge of the keyboard.
2.3.2 Installing PCMCIA Options The Notebook has provisions for two Type I/Type II or one Type III PCMCIA option c ard. Use t he followi ng proce dure to inst all a PCMCIA option: 1. Review the instal la t ion instr u ctions su pplied with the P C M CIA o ption card(s ).
2.3.3 Install ing the Optional Nume ric Keypa d An option al numeric k eyboard can b e attached t o the note book via the notebook PS/2 conn ector as sh own in Figur e 2-3.

2.5.1 Installing an Exter na l Keyboard/Mouse As shown in Figur e 2-5, th e notebook has provi sions for tw o exter nal PS/2 compatib le devi ces (keyb oard, mouse, et c.) that may be attach ed to the notebook. The pin outs for the 6-pin Min i-DIN connec tors are also pr ovided in Figure 2-6.
2.5.2 Installi ng Exter na l Paral lel Prin ter The No te book is equi pp ed with a bidirect ional, ECC/EPP c ompatible, 25 -p in parallel pri nter port.
2.5.3 Installing Exter nal Serial Por t Device The notebook contains an RS- 232 serial port with a male DB-9 connector as shown i n Figure 2-7. The serial ports are us ed to interconne ct such devices.
2.5.4 Installing External VGA Monitor The note book is cap abl e of driving b oth its internal LCD di sp lay and an exter nal VGA monitor (LCD on ly, simultaneous, or VGA on ly). The exter n al monitor con nector pi nouts and conn ector locat ions are s hown in F igure 2- 8.
2.5.5 Installing Exter nal Mic rophone An exter nal mi crophone can be attached to the notebook using the leftmos t audio connec tor (when vi ewed from the re ar of the notebook). Wh en the exter nal microphone is i nstalled an d the unit powered up, the i nter nal microph one is disable d.
2.7 Initial System Checkout After you’ve in stalled all inter nal options and e xter nal cabli ng, you’re r eady for system chec kout and software configuration. To check out the syste m, se t the power switch on th e n otebook to t he O n ( I ) positi on which initiates the note book self tes t.
3 Operating Instructions 3.1 Introduction The fi r st two subsect ions descri be the Ex t ensa 51x Ser i es Notebo o k operating control s and indicators. The r emainder of this section contain s a summary of computer operations rel ated to notebook maintenance includ ing how t o restore sy stem softw are.
3.2.1 Button Switches The no teboo k contains two butto n switches a bo ve the ke yb oard incl u ding: • Power On/Off Switch - Alternate ac tion, button type switc h that controls power to th e unit. Pressing the Power button causes powe r to be applied to the note book and power up self test to be run.
3.2.3 T ouchpad Controls The Ext en sa 51x Seri es Notebook C omputers are equi pped with a bu i l t-i n mouse dev ice call ed "the Touch pad" phy sically locate d at the b ottom of the keybo ard (refe r to F i gure 3- 1) . The cursor is positioned by touchi ng and dragging your finger i n the directi on you want the curs or to go.
• Insert the fl oppy into the floppy drive s lot with th e label side up and th e metal-s hutter end first. Gentl y push the fl oppy into the floppy drive s lot until t he floppy clicks in to place. • To remove a floppy, press the eject button until the floppy pops out.
3.3.4 Responding to Low Battery Conditions The computer ge nerally wil l notify y ou when you ar e reachi ng a low battery condit ion by th e followin g actions : • Four short be eps per minut e (un.
3.3.7 Resto ring Miss in g Syst em Files When you powe r up the Notebook, it automatically ch ecks for certai n key files that must be pr esent for n or mal system operati on. If any of these files are acci dentally erased as in dicated by error messag e, insert the Windows 95 St artup diskette and reboot the sys tem.

4.2.2 I/O Subsystem The I/O su bs ystem, implemente d w ith an NS87 33 4 VJG Super I/O Controller Chip, pr ovides for such functions as i nter nal Har d Drive control, floppy drive control , and serial and parallel ports .

4.2.3.1 External VGA Drive Capability On the Exten sa notebook, the e xter nal VGA port is provi ded by the port adaptor fixture in the for m of a 15-pi n, female, D-type connec tor which can be used t o dri ve an e xter nal CR T (up t o 1024 x 768 x 2 5 6 col ors.
4.2.6 PCMCIA Subsystem The note bo o k is equipped wi th an on-bo a rd PC MCIA host adapte r PCMCIA Controller) and sockets to support T ype I, Type II or Type III options. The PCMCIA Contr oller ha s the followi ng feature s: • Single -chip P CMCIA host adapters • Direct con nection to IS A (PC AT) Bus • Direc t c o nn ection to PCM CIA 2 .
4.2.7.1 Power Manag ement The notebook is equipped with a power manag ement function that minimizes bat te r y u s age for prolonged ba tt ery operati on and aut o mati cal ly recharg es the b atteries wh en the n otebook is used with an AC adapter .

• Try rebooting th e system (Ctrl -Alt-Del ); restore system from diskettes, if nece ssar y. • If the computer is c apable of running the Setup program; chec k the serial and parall el port configurations , and other features that may affect sy stem operation .
• Measure the voltage at th e AC Outlet or pl ug in a know n good applian ce (EG. a lamp) t o verify that v oltage is pre sent. If the v oltage is OK, try replaci ng the AC Adap ter • Check to see that th e battery pack is ins talled correctl y (try using a recha r g ed batter y pack if b attery is di schar g ed).
5.3.2 T roubleshooting a Displa y Problem If the LCD remains bl ank when you tur n on th e computer , and the status indica t ors light , ch eck the fo ll owing cont r o ls on the di sp lay (refe r to.
• Faulty ph one line - Conn ect a telephone to th e line an d listen for a dial tone. • Software program - Check to ens ure that you have install ed the softwa re correctly.

5.3.5.3 Creating a Bootable Floppy Diske tte Prior to us ing PC-Docto r , create a bootab le flo p py diskette u si ng th e followin g proced ure: 1. Power up the unit; wh en unit displ ays message, "Starti ng Windows 95", press F8 . Choose Command Prompt Only from menu.
n Note: If PC-Doctor detects a virus, it will stop with an error mes sage. Y ou must then use one of the standard virus detection an d removal programs to remove the vi rus. 5.3.5.5 Quitting PC-Doctor To exit P C-Doct o r , select the Quit pull down menu and then s elect the Quit to DOS option.

6.2.2 Protecting t he Disk Drives To protect the d i sk dr iv es and data, back up th e s ystem disk periodically on floppy diskettes. Pe riodically use a h ead-cleaning diskette in th e floppy disket te drive to p r olong th e life of the dr iv e and to help main tain data integ rity.

3. Grasp the ri bbon loop on the batt ery and pull t he battery out of the comp artme nt. 4. When re placing th e battery, in sert the en d o p posite the r ib bon loop with th e b attery notches pointin g up ward. Slide the ba tt ery into the compartme nt and replace the b attery door .
6.5.3 Removing/Replacing the Heat Sink To r emove and replace the heat sin k, per for m the fol lowing procedure : 1. Disconnect th e AC adapter from the Notebook. 2. Remove th e b attery as d escri be d i n P aragrap h 6.5.1. 3. Loosen and tilt back the the keyboard assembly as described i n Paragraph 6.
6.5.4 Ope nin g/Re pl ac in g th e Uppe r C as e Ass em bly To r emove/replace the Top Case Assembly , per for m the foll owing proce dure: 1. Remove th e AC Adap ter , battery pack , any install ed PCM CIA o p tions, the Keyboar d Assembly and Heat S ink Assembl y as described in Paragraphs 6.
4. Using a p lastic s tick, unlock the ZIF c onnector l ocated ne ar the Touchpad an d remove the cable from the con nector . Also, remove the 2-con ne c to r sp eaker cabl e f rom th e Main B oard Conne ct or . 5. Remove the cable cov er below the display by li fting upward on the front ed ge of the c over .
3. Tur n the c omputer over so that the Hard Driv e panel is on your right side. 4. Press d own on the two cover r elease tabs and slid e to the l eft; lift up on the driv e door and remove from the notebook. 5. Remove the two scre ws near th e driv e connec tor cabl e.
6.5.7 Remo ving/Replacing DIMM Mod ules To r emove and replace DIMM me mory modules, use the following pr ocedure: 1. Loosen the keyboard ass embly (but d o not disconn ect keyboar d cables) as des cribe d i n Ste ps 1 t h rough 4 of P aragraph 6.5.2.

6. Using a s mall flat blade screwdriv er and apply light pres sure in a rocking motion to remove the har d drive cable c onnector . 7. Remo ve four Phil lips-head sc rews (one o n each of t he four si des of the heat sink openi ng) securin g the board to the base ass embly.

B.3 Mouse Navigation Y ou can use a mouse to n avigate thr ough PC-Doc tor (alter n ately use the arrow key s from the k eyboard). Use the le ft mouse button t o choose obj ects (menu entr ie s and action codes i n s q u are brac ke ts).
