I. Quick Refer ence Guide The MA CH-1 and Standard MagnaStar ® Handsets have: • Backlit LCD Display and telephone style ke ypad with two additional keys, “+” and “End Call. ” • Hook Switch is acti v ated by a magnet mounted in the standard holder (depending on model and installation).
A. Placing V oice Calls Domestic 1. Choose “ 1 ” for V oice Call. 2. Press “ 1 ” + Area Code + Number ( “ 1 ” is optional). Credit Card Billing: “ 0 ” + Area Code + Number . 3. If you misdial, press “ * ” to clear the digits and enter the number again.
NO TE 5: The curr ent link is displayed on the top of the “Main” menu in in verse video. Y ou may switch to an alternate link by simply pr essing the “6” ke y until the desir ed available link is displayed on the top of the menu. NO TE 6: T o setup a “TDD” call you may press “5” whether or not it is displayed.

® 5 (Rev . 8/04) Data Calls 1. The airborne modem should be con fi gured with its “ Re-dial ” function OFF . 2. Connect the modem or PC ’ s cord to the handset ’ s RJ-11 jack. 3. Prepare modem to dial telephone number using DTMF tones. 4. Press “ 4 ” (Modem) on the handset and command the modem to dial.
C. Receiving Calls Steps for Air T raveler When someone calls you, the phone will ring and the number of the ground party will appear on the display screen. If the called handset is busy (and Call W aiting is enabled), the airborne user will hear a Call W aiting (single beep) tone (press “ + ” to answer incoming call).
The user deactiv ates this feature by using any of the following options: Option #1: T ake the handset of f-hook and press: “ 9 ” (Setup) - “ 6 ” (Call Fwd) - “ Destination Inplane Number ” (which is highlighted on menu).

Baud Rate and Link Selection Dialing Pr efixes The following dialing pre fi x capabilities ha v e been added as part of software version 4.0A to f acilitate the con fi guration of a speci fi c data/voice call. These pre fi xes will o verride an y con fi gurations/factory default v alues which were pre viously programmed.

II. Using Y our MagnaStar® Digital Airborne T elephone MagnaStar C-2000 Digital Airborne T elephone System Operating Instructions A. Intr oduction All normal operations of the MagnaStar C-2000 Digital Airborne T elephone System are performed using the system ’ s handset(s).
B. V erizon Airf one Service A vailability While the handset is “ on-hook ” the “ Services ” menu is displayed. When the handset is placed “ of f-hook ” the Services menu remains approximately fi ve sec- onds. It is not necessary to wait for the “ Main ” menu before dialing.
NO TE 2: If you’r e using a phone or headset without a menu screen (suc h as a WH-10 or C.H.I.P), the steps for placing calls ar e basically the same as for a phone with a menu scr een. However , most WH-10 phones do not have a “+” ke y or an “End Call” ke y .
C1. Placing a V oice Call Domestic Place the handset off-hook. Choose “ 1 ” (V oice), then enter “ 1 ” + Area Code + Number . The number will be displayed for approximately one second before it is sent. The digit “ 1 ” before the area code is optional and need not be entered.
C2. Placing a Call via the CPI A uto Link Switch Enabled - T o place a call using a Cell Phone Interface (CPI) with Auto Link Switch enabled is no different than using the Air-Ground link. Place the handset of f hook and press “ 1 ” for voice, “ 3 ” for F ax or “ 4 ” for Modem.
® 14 (Rev . 8/04) C3. Placing a Call with the Cockpit Headset Interface Panel (C.H.I.P .) The C.H.I.P is intended to allow the cockpit cre w to place or receive phone calls through their existing audio control panel. It may also be mounted in the cabin and used with a headset and mic as an alternativ e to a handset.
® 15 (Rev . 8/04) C5. Aircraft Credit Card Number Option The air trav eler has the option to store and use one credit card number for the entire fl ight and does not require the re-entry of the card number for each call. The system must fi rst be con fi gured for credit mode (see Section VI, B3).
® 16 (Rev . 8/04) C7. T wo Calls On One Handset Should you wish to con verse pri vately with two dif- ferent parties at the same time, two independent calls can be placed on the same handset. While con versing with the fi rst party , place the call on hold by pressing “ +.
® 17 (Rev . 8/04) b . Confer ence Controller . The conference controller is the only con- ference member who can add conference members or transfer the conference to another Inplane conference member . By initiating the conference you become the conference controller .
® 18 (Rev . 8/04) D . Inplane Calls The inplane calling feature allows you to mak e calls to other handsets within the aircraft as long as the handset has been assigned an Inplane number . All other handsets which hav e been assigned an Inplane number are listed on this menu along with their corre- sponding labels.

Phone In Use On the inplane calling menu, the inplane numbers for handset(s) and CDBR-2 port(s) currently off-hook (i.e. a screen other than the “ Services ” screen is being displayed) are highlighted. This will indi- cate to the Caller that the Called party is currently using the phone.

® 22 (Rev . 8/04) Receiving a F ax When receiving uplink f axes through the C-2000 handset, participation of both air and ground parties are required.
b . Polling Receive Operation. Polling operation is a mode that allo ws the fax machines to automatically negotiate a re versal in the direc- tion of transmission. Many fax machines support polling in some fashion b ut each manufacturer de fi nes their o wn polling method which may not be compatible with equipment from other manufac- turers.
® 24 (Rev . 8/04) Receiving a F ax with Direct Aircraft Dialing The fax machine in the air should be set to answer automatically . 1. The ground party calls 1-888 aircall number assigned to the airborne fax machine. 2. The airborne f ax answers and receiv es.
® 25 (Rev . 8/04) F . Data Calls The MagnaStar C-2000 and the V erizon Airfone system provide connections for data modems. The modem software should be con fi gured to dial with DTMF tones. F1. Data Calls Using a C-2000 Handset 1. Connect the Modem or PC ’ s RJ-11 cord into the RJ-11 jack on the handset.
F2. Data Calls Using a CDBR-2 Data Station 1. Connect the Modem or PC ’ s RJ-11 cord into the Data Station RJ-11 jack. The Data Station must be con fi gured for Modem (either via a switch or hard wired). 2. Instruct the PC to dial the desired phone number .
F4. Link selection dialing prefixes f or individual calls #61# Selects Air-Ground (disables Auto Link Switch) #62# Selects GroundCell (disables Auto Link Switch) #63# Selects SA TCOM (disables Auto Link Switch) #612# Selects Air-Ground then GroundCell (SA TCOM not included in the rotation).
H. Gr ound-to-Air Calls The ground-to-air calling feature allows the air tra v eler to be “ called ” while in- fl ight by a party on the ground. Once called, the air trav eler may accept the call immediately or sav e the calling number to be re- dialed at a later time.
3. The system will connect the call for you and the callback number will be deleted. The number can be stored as a message for later viewing if you cannot or do not wish to respond to the call immediately . • T o store the number as a message, press “ # ” (Store) while the handset is in its holder and the handset will stop ringing.
H2. Receiving a Call via the CPI All handsets with “ Aircraft Alerting ” enabled will ring when the assigned cell phone number is called. T o answer you need only to take any ringing handset of f-hook.
H5. V iewing/Responding to Stored Messages If you cannot respond immediately to a call when it is receiv ed, it can be sa ved as a message for later viewing. If the word “ Messages ” appears on the “ Services ” display , one or more calls hav e been stored.
H6. V iewing an Aircall Number The handset ’ s assigned aircall number will be displayed on the “ Services ” menu. An Aircraft call number is displayed by placing the handset off-hook, then pressing “ 8 ” for ‘ Aircalls, ’ and then “ + ” (More).
I. Dir ectory Assistance Place the handset off-hook then press “ 1 ” (V oice) + Area Code + 555-1212. If you do not know the area code, call Airfone Customer Care (Dial “ 0 ” (Operator) while in fl ight). If you make a mistake when dialing press “ * ” to clear the entered dig- its and enter the number again.

IV . SA TCOM Service Nearly all of the features offered with MagnaStar digital handset are av ailable with the SA TCOM service connection. The MagnaStar C-2000 Digital Airborne T elephone system connects to Inmarsat Satellite equipment (SA TCOM) to provide complete telephony service from your cabin telecommunications system, the C-2000 system.
NO TE: The following dialing formats will be accepted by the MagnaStar for all communication links: Dir ect Billing Ar ea code + Number “1” + Ar ea code + Number “00” + Country Code + City Cod.
NO TE 1: Credit Billing is not applicable to Analog SA TCOM systems configur ed for “Handset Mode”. NO TE 2: The MagnaStar will automatically r eformat all of the 7 dialing formats listed above into the format “00” + Country Code + City Code + Number befor e sending the dialed number to the Satellite Data Unit (SDU).
® 38 (Rev . 8/04) C. Gr ound-to-Air SA TCOM Calls C1. Receiving Calls In-flight From the SA TCOM system, ground-to-air calls can be directed to a speci fi c handset or handsets. T ypically a two-digit code, “ T erminal ID Number , ” is entered by the calling party following the number assigned to the Airborne SA TCOM system.
® 39 (Rev . 8/04) C3. Call F orwarding A handset can be con fi gured such that incoming calls (Inplane, Air/Ground, and SA TCOM) are automatically redirected to another handset. The user activ ates this feature by taking the handset off-hook and pressing “ 9 ” (Setup) - “ 6 ” (Call Fwd), and then enter the “ Destination Inplane Number .

Place the call on hold by pressing “ + ” (Put Call on Hold). Press “ 6 ” to rotate through the av ailable links (Satcom, GndCell or Air-Gnd).

42 (Rev . 8/04) ® V . HF Radio Service Connection The MagnaStar C-2000 system can be connected to an HF Radio to provide access to that communications medium from the cabin handsets. The connection can be made directly , or through the aircraft audio panel.

64 (Rev . 8/04) ® X. T roubleshooting Inf ormation A. Handset T ext Messages The MagnaStar system provides information screens that display te xt messages. If the radio detects certain types of operational faults, the digital handset will display the appropriate message.
65 (Rev . 8/04) ® There are sev eral reasons why abnormal call termination may occur . They may be caused by poor radio link conditions, antenna blockage, radio frequency interference, base station co verage problems because operation is below 18,000 feet or ground netw ork problems.
