12 Receiver Operations Selecting a Component To listen to or watch a connected component, first select the function on the receiver or with the remote. Before you begin, make sure you have: • Connected all components securely and correctly as indicated on pages 4 to 11.
13 Getting Started Receiver Operations LD z When you watch TV or video programs We recommend you play audio portion through the receiver instead of your TV’s speakers. This lets you take advantage of the receiver’s surround sound effects, like Dolby Surround, and lets you use the receiver’s remote to control the audio.
14 Receiver Operations Note Pressing a SYSTEM CONTROL/FUNCTION button will activate the component indicated for that button (i.e., the component connected to the respective connector). If, however, the connected component is different from the one indicated for the button, the component will not be activated when the button is pressed only once.

20 Dolby Surround Setup Adjusting the speaker volume Z Use the remote while seated in your listening position to adjust the volume of each speaker. Note This receiver incorporates a new test tone with a frequency centered at 800 Hz for easier speaker volume adjustment.
21 Getting Started Dolby Surround Setup Selecting the center mode The receiver offers you four center modes: PHANTOM, 3 CH LOGIC, NORMAL, and WIDE. Each mode is designed for a different speaker configuration. Select the mode that best suits your speaker system configuration.
22 Dolby Surround Setup z What is the test tone? Signal given out by the receiver for adjusting the speaker volume. 26 Sound Adjustment Notes • All the sound fields can be used with Dolby Digital (AC-3) sound sources. • The EFFECT parameter allows you to adjust the overall presence of the sound field. • The volume of the rear speakers, subwoofer, and center speaker can still be adjusted even when the DIRECT PASS indicator is on.
