7 Getting Started Getting Started Step 2 Setting up the r emote commander Inserting the batteries Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by matching the + and – on the batteries to the diagram inside the battery compartment. Using the remote commander Y ou can use this remote commander to operate this unit and a Sony TV .
8 Getting Started Step 3 Connecting the unit T o a TV that has phono type audio/video input jacks This connection improves pictur e and sound quality and is necessary if you want to use the T rinitron TV Synchro Play function. If your TV does not have audio/video input jacks, skip this step and go to page 8.
9 Getting Started Getting Started Step 3 continued Additional connection T o a TV that has phono type audio/ video output jacks Y ou can recor d a TV programme showing on a TV . Connect LINE-1 IN of the unit to the TV as shown on the right. For details on recor ding, see “Recording TV programmes” on page 16.
10 Getting Started Step 3 : Connecting the unit (continued) Additional connection T o a stereo system Y ou can improve sound quality by connecting a stereo system as shown on the right. LINE IN LINE-1 OUT AUDIO Audio cable (not supplied) 1 Disconnect the aerial cable from your TV and connect it to AERIAL IN on the rear panel of the unit.
11 Getting Started Getting Started 1 Press ON/ST ANDBY to turn on the unit. 2 Press INPUT SELECT until “L2” appears in the display window . 3 T urn on your TV and select a programme position for the video playback. Choose a channel between UHF 30 and 39 on the TV , where ther e is no picture and no sound or only a steady r ustling sound.
12 Getting Started Step 4 : T uning your TV to the unit (continued) T o obtain a clear blue screen If the blue screen does not appear clearly in step 4 above, turn the RF- CH screw at the r ear of the unit with a screw driver to a position wher e the TV clearly displays the blue screen.

The unit turns on and starts playing automatically if you insert a tape with its safety tab removed. 3 Press · PLA Y . When the tape reaches the end, it will r ewind automatically .

Basic Operations 17 Basic Operations Notes • When you play back a tape r ecorded in the P AL or MESECAM colour system, streaks may appear even if the COLOR SYSTEM switch is set to P AL/MESECAM. If so, select the colour system, P AL or MESECAM in the P AL/MESECAM option of the SET UP MENU.
Basic Operations 18 INPUT SELECT T APE SPEED r REC Recor ding TV pr ogrammes Y ou can record TV pr ogrammes from your TV by connecting the TV to the unit’s LINE-1 IN jacks. Before you start… • Connect the LINE-1 IN jacks of the unit to the audio/video output jacks of your TV (see “Additional connection” on page 7).
Basic Operations 19 Basic Operations T o recor d NTSC colour system programmes NTSC colour signals can be recor ded on this unit. For tape speed, select SP or EP in step 4. EP pr ovides recor ding time three times as long as SP , however , SP produces better picture quality .
Basic Operations 20 T o save a recor ding T o prevent accidental erasure, br eak off the safety tab as illustrated. T o record on a tape again, cover the tab hole with adhesive tape. Tip • The display appears on the TV scr een indicating information about the tape, but the information won’t be recor ded on the tape.

Additional Operations 29 Backing up your singing (V ocal Assist) This unit can assist your singing in case you forget the lyrics while you are singing.
Additional Operations 30 Karaoke sing along (continued) Grading your singing As an extra challenge, the unit can grade your singing. 1 Start singing and press SCORE. “SCORE” appears on the TV screen, and the unit starts analysing your singing. 2 Press SCORE again after singing for mor e than one minute.
Additional Operations 31 SHOUT Competing for the loudest voice The unit measures and displays the loudness of your voice numerically when you shout into the microphone. 1 Press SHOUT . “SHOUT” appears in the display window (English on-screen display only) and the unit starts a countdown on the TV screen.
Additional Operations 32 = / + SEARCH AMS/INDEX Selecting the AMS or index function The AMS (Automatic Music Sensor) function is mainly for karaoke tapes. It searches for blank spaces (of at least four seconds) between r ecorded signals on the sound track of a tape.

38 Editing r REC Basic editing (when r ecording on this unit) Before you start editing • T urn on your TV and set it to the video channel. • Press INPUT SELECT to display “L2”(or “L1”) in the display window . • Press T APE SPEED to select the tape speed (SP or LP for the P AL system, and SP or EP for the NTSC system).
39 Editing AUDIO DUB Audio dubbing This feature lets you r ecord over the normal audio track. The monaural sound previously r ecorded is r eplaced while the original hi-fi sound remains unchanged. Use this feature to add commentary to a tape that you have recor ded with a camcorder .
40 Editing T o listen to both the hi-fi and normal audio Set AUDIO MIX to ON in the SET UP MENU (page 34). Use this featur e to listen to dubbed audio over the original hi-fi audio. When AUDIO MIX is set to ON, the AUDIO MONITOR button does not function.

42 Additional Information T roubleshooting Symptom The ON/ST ANDBY switch does not function. The power is turned on but the unit does not operate. The playback picture does not appear on the TV screen. The picture is not clear . The picture r olls vertically during picture sear ch.
43 Additional Information Recording Symptom The tape starts playing as soon as it is inserted. The tape is ejected when you press r REC. Nothing happens when you press r REC. A tape cannot be inserted. The remote commander does not function. The tracking indicator does not appear on the screen.
