2-680-300-01(1) Basic Operations Menu Operations Y ou can s witch between screens , read/pla y/view content, or set items, using the 5-w ay control b utton, number buttons , or MENU . 2-680-300-01(1) T ur ning on Sony Reader Slide the PO WER switch in the direction of to turn on Sony Reader . Slide the POWER switch. Sony Reader turns on. The star t-up screen appears when tur ning on for the first time, or after reset, or when the battery is depleted.
2-680-300-01(1) About the resume function Sony Reader automatically turns off if no operation is perf or med for 60 minutes . The pre viously displa yed screen appears when tur ning on by sliding the PO WER s witch from this state.
2-680-300-01(1) Note • If the remaining batter y power is lo w , the f ollowing w ar ning appears. Charge the batter y . If you contin ue use without charging, the f ollowing warning appears, and Son y Reader will tur n off automatically . Charge Sony Reader and turn it on again.

2-680-300-01(1) Close the Media slot cover . Notes • Be sure to inser t the memor y card in the correct direction. Forced inser tion may damage the slot. • Do not inser t an incompatible memor y card, as it ma y cause malfunction. • Do not use a deformed memor y card or adaptor .

2-680-300-01(1) Importing Content Impor ting eBooks fr om CONNECT eBooks Y ou can download eBooks from the online e-Book store “CONNECT eBooks” to your computer . Use the dedicated software CONNECT Reader to access CONNECT eBooks. Notes • T o download eBooks , you need to prepare an Inter net-accessible environment on y our computer .

2-680-300-01(1) Note • If “Son y Reader” does not appear in the source vie w after connecting Sony Reader to y our computer , disconnect the USB cable from Son y Reader , then reconnect it after a while. If the optional cradle is used, remo ve Son y Reader from the cradle , then replace it after a while.

T ransf er any unnecessar y content back to CONNECT Reader , then delete it to increase free space on Sony Reader . ( page 30 ) • Y ou cannot delete or cop y transf erred content on Sony Reader .

Hints • When you clic k “Books , ” “Audio” or “Pictures” in the Source view , only their respectiv e content is display ed.

Ev er y time you press SIZE, the page is magnified in steps and retur ns to the original scale after the maximum magnification. • When reading an eBook or T e xt file: The scale s witches in 3 steps ( , , – indicated at the bottom of the screen).
2-680-300-01(1) Switching screen orientation (ver tical/ horizontal) Screen orientation (including menu screens) can be s witched in the follo wing 2 wa ys. • Press and hold SIZE on a menu screen or a Book page screen. Press and hold SIZE again to s witch back.
2-680-300-01(1) Displa ying the book information Y ou can displa y the book inf or mation, such as the title, author , book cov er thumbnail, etc. In the Option menu, press / to select “Info, ” then press ENT . The book inf or mation appears.
2-680-300-01(1) Sor ting the Book list On the Book list, books are sor ted by title alphabetically . Y ou can also sor t books by author or date. In the Home menu, press / to select “By Author” or “By Date , ” then press ENT . Hint • If you select “By Date, ” books are sorted by date transf erred to Sony Reader .
2-680-300-01(1) Selecting a book from the Collection list Y ou can select and read a book from the list of collections created on CONNECT Reader . Hint • For details on ho w to create or transfer a collection, ref er to the CONNECT Reader Help . In the Home menu, press / to select “Collections, ” then press ENT .
2-680-300-01(1) Creating a bookmark on a page Y ou can create a bookmark on a page you ma y wish to retur n to . On the Book page screen, press MARK on the desired page. The MARK LED lights up , and the mar k appears in the top right cor ner of the page.
2-680-300-01(1) T o open the desired page fr om the Bookmark list In the Option menu, press / to select “Bookmarks, ” then press ENT . The Bookmark list appears. Press / to select the desired page , then press ENT . Hint • Bookmarks can also be created on CONNECT Reader .
2-680-300-01(1) T o r emove all bookmarks in the curr ent book In the Option menu, press / to select “Utilities, ” then press ENT . Press / to select “Remove All Bookmarks, ” then press ENT . All bookmarks in the current book are remov ed.
2-680-300-01(1) Reading previously displa yed pages Sony Reader stores all displa yed pages in memory for easy recall at any time . On the Book page screen, press . As you press repeatedly , pre viously display ed pages appear in re verse order .
2-680-300-01(1) Playing Audio Files Pla ying audio files transf erred fr om y our computer MP3/AA C files can be play ed back on Sony Reader . Y ou can also read books while listening to an audio file. ( page 47 ) When listening to audio files, connect the optional headphones to the headphone jack.
2-680-300-01(1) • If an audio file is play ed, “Now Pla ying” can be selected on the Home menu and the Pla yback screen can be displa yed. • The Now Pla ying icon in the Home menu changes when an audio file is being pla yed. Press / to select the desired track from the list, then press ENT .

2-680-300-01(1) V iewing Pictur es Viewing pictures transferred from your computer BMP/JPEG/GIF/PNG files can be view ed on Sony Reader . In the Home menu, press / to select “Pictures, ” then press ENT . The Picture list appears. Indicates that the content is stored on the memory card.

2-680-300-01(1) Locking the Sony Reader Scr een Y ou can loc k the Sony Reader screen by setting a pass word. F ollow the steps below . In the Home menu, press / to select “Settings, ” then press ENT . The Setting menu appears . Press / to select “Screen Lock, ” then press ENT .

2-680-300-01(1) Checking V ersion Infor mation for Sony Reader The product name and the fir mware v ersion of Sony Reader can be displa yed. In the Home menu, press / to select “Settings, ” then press ENT . The Setting menu appears . Press / to select “About, ” then press ENT .
2-680-300-01(1) T roub leshooting T r oubleshooting If Sony Reader does not function as e xpected, tr y the f ollowing steps to resolve the issue . Reset Sony Reader by pressing the Reset b utton with a small pin or clip. The content and settings stored on Sony Reader are not aff ected by resetting, and no inf or mation is erased.
2-680-300-01(1) Power Symptom Cause or corrective action Batter y lif e seems shor t. The operating temperature is belo w 5 °C (41 °F). This is due to the batter y characteristics and not a malfunction. Y ou hav e not used Sony Reader f or a prolonged period.
2-680-300-01(1) Symptom Cause or corrective action Sony Reader authorization/de- authorization is not possible with CONNECT eBooks. Sony Reader authorization/de- authorization is not possible with CONNECT eBooks if “Screen Lock” of Sony Reader is set to “ON.
2-680-300-01(1) Symptom Cause or corrective action The data on Continue Reading, Bookmark or Histor y of some files is missing. If the file status has changed (such as in the f ollowing cases), the data on Continue Reading, Bookmark or Histor y ma y be deleted.
2-680-300-01(1) Symptom Cause or corrective action Content cannot be transf erred to Sony Reader from your computer . The USB cable is not connected properly . Disconnect the USB cable , then reconnect it. There is not enough free space on Sony Readers memory .

2-680-300-01(1) Restoring default settings All def ault settings of Sony Reader can be restored. Notes The f ollowing occurs when y ou restore the def ault settings. • The screen orientation setting will be hor izontal. • The passw ord will be erased and the screen loc k released.
