3 Preparing the phone To insert the SIM ca rd and battery 1 Remove the bat tery cove r. 2 Slide the SIM card into its holder with the contac ts facing down. 3 Insert the battery w ith the labe l side up a nd the conne ctors facing each othe r. 4 Replace the ba ttery cover.
4 To charge the battery 1 The phone battery is partly charged when you buy it. Connect the charge r to the phone. It takes approxim ately 2.5 hours to fully charge th e battery. Press a key to illuminate the screen. 2 To remove t he charger, tilt the plu g upwards.
5 Turning on the phone To turn on the phone 1 Press and hold down . 2 Enter your PIN if reques ted. To correct mistakes, press . 3 Select OK . 4 Select a language. 5 Enter the time and date and select Save . To turn off the phone • Press and hold down .
6 SIM and PIN SIM card The SIM (Subscribe r Identity Module) card, which you get from your n etwork operator, contains informat ion about your subscription . Always tur n off your pho ne and detach the charger bef o re you insert or remove the SIM ca rd.

11 Shortcuts The main menus are shown as ic ons. Some submenus include tabs. To use navigation key shortcuts • Press to play the radio. • Press to write a new message. • Press to take a picture. • Press to open Contacts . • Press to Add , Delete , Mo ve or use a shortcut.
12 Calling You must turn on the phone and be w ithin range of a netwo rk. To make a call 1 From standby enter th e area code and phone number. 2 Press .
13 To make international calls 1 From standby press and hold down until a + sign appears on the screen. 2 Enter the coun try code, area code (with out the first zero) and phone number . 3 Press . To view a missed call • When Missed calls: is displayed, sele ct Yes to view.
14 Contacts You can save contac ts in the phone memory or on th e SIM card. You can copy co ntacts fro m the phone memory to t he SIM card or from the S IM card to the phone memory. To add a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to New contact and select Add .

16 Radio Your phone has a radio and the handsfree wor ks as an antenn a. To listen to the radio 1 Connect the han dsfree to the phone. 2 From standby selec t . To turn on the stereo speakers • When the radio is playing, select Options > Turn on spkr .

20 Messaging Text messages (SMS) You must have a service centre number, which is supplied by your service provider and saved o n the SIM card. Yo u may have to enter the number yourself. To set service centre number 1 From standby selec t Menu > Mess aging > Settings > Text message > Service centre .
21 Picture messages (MMS) Picture messa ges can contain text, pic tures, sound recordings and attach ments. To create and send a pictu re message 1 From standby press . 2 Select Picture msg . 3 Enter text. To add items to the message, press , scroll , and select a n item.
22 Camera You can take pictures a nd record video clip to view , save and send pictures. Pict ures taken with the ca mera are saved in Menu > Organizer > File manager > Camera album . The format is JPEG. To start the came ra and take a picture 1 From standby selec t .

24 More functions TrackID™ TrackID ™ is a free m usic recog nition serv ice. Search for song titles, ar tists and albu m names. You must have the required settings in your phone. See Internet on page 25. To search for song in formation • When you hear a song through a loudspeaker, from standby select Menu > Entertainment > TrackID ™ .
25 Internet You need the correct settings in your phone. If settings are not in your phone, you can: • Get them i n a text messa ge (SMS) from the networ k op erator. • On a computer, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support and request a text message wi th the settings.
26 File manager You can us e the file manag er to handle files saved in the phone memor y. To view information about files 1 From standby selec t Menu > Organizer > File manager . 2 Find a file and select Options > Information . 27 Bluetooth™ wireless technology Bluetooth™ wireless technology makes wir eless connections to other Bluetooth devices, for example, a Bluetooth headset , poss ible.
28 To pair a dev ice with your phone 1 From standby s elect Menu > Settings > the Connec tivity tab > Bluetooth > My devices > N ew device to search for available dev ices. 2 Select a device fr om the list. Enter a passcode, if required.
29 Entering text There are two methods you can use to enter text: m ultitap or predictive text input. To enter text using multitap • Press – u ntil the letter appears.
30 How to use the keys • To change the input method, press and hold down . • To shift between upper case and lower case lette rs, press . • To change the writing language , press and hold down. • To delete char acters, pr ess . • To delete a whole word, press and hold down .
31 To silence the alarm • When the alarm sounds, press any key. • To repeat the alarm, s elect Snooze . To turn off t he alarm • When the alarm sounds, selec t Turn off . Emergency calls Your phone supports international emergency numbers, for example, 112 and 911.
32 Ringtones and themes Themes are used to change the appearance of th e screen. To select a ring tone • From standby sel ect Menu > Settings > t he Sounds & alerts tab > Ringtone and select a rin gtone.
33 Locks SIM card lock The SIM card lock protects your subscription, but not your pho ne itself, from un authorized use. If you chan ge SIM cards , the phone still works with the new SIM card.
34 To edit your PIN 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > the General tab > Security > Locks > SIM protection > Change PIN . 2 Enter your PIN and select OK . 3 Enter a new PIN and select OK . 4 Re-enter the new PIN t o confirm and select OK .
35 To turn on the phone lock 1 From standby s elect Menu > Settings > the Ge neral tab > Security > Locks > Phone protection > Protection > On .
36 Troubleshooting Some problems require that you call your service pro vider, but you can correc t most problems yourself. Remov e the SIM card before handing your phone in for repair . Memory capacity and speed If you have not restarted th e phone for a while, yo u may experience problems with its memory capacity and speed.
37 I cannot turn the phone on , what should I do? Try charging th e phone until it has fi nished charging. Attach the charger (make su re the power icon on the charger is facing upwards) and char ge the phone f or 2.5 hours. T he battery i con on the scr een may n ot appear until the phone has charge d for 30 minutes.
