13 Getting started • T o use up the batter ies completely , put the camera in the slide show mode (page 6 5) and leave it that w ay until the batter ies are used up.

25 Shoot ing still ima ges Basic still image shooting – Using auto mode Holding the cam era correctly When s hootin g pi ctures with t he cam era, be carefu l so that your fing ers do not blo ck the lens port ion, finder wi ndow, flash em itter, or AF illumina tor (pages 8, 9).

29 Shoot ing still ima ges Shooting close-ups – Macro For close- ups of subjects like flow ers or insects, shoot using the macr o feature. You can shoot subjects appr oaching up to 10 cm (4 in ches) wh en th e zoom is set to its W- end. How ever, th e availa ble foc us dist ance depe nds on t he z oom po sit ion .
30 • When shooting in macro mode, us e the LCD screen. If you use the fi nder, the limits of what you see and what you actually shoot may be different. This is due to the parallax effect. • When shooting i n macro mode, the focus range is very narrow and you may not be able to focus on the whole of the s ubject.

50 • When you are shooting movies and you choose Multipoint AF , the distance to the center of the LCD screen is estimated as an ave rage, so the AF works ev en with a certain amount of vibration.
51 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng techni ques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case like t his, use AF lock to focus on the subjec t, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

54 Exposure In addition to the focus and other settings, it is also important to adjust the exposure in order t o take beautiful pictures. Exposure is the amount of light that the CCD of the digital still came ra is able to receive. This v alue changes according t o the combination of aperture and shutter speed.
55 Advance d still image shoot ing Adjusting th e exposure – EV adju stment You ca n manu ally shif t the ex posur e value determin ed by th e camer a. Use th is mode when you do not get th e proper ex posure, for instan ce, the subjec t and its back ground have hi gh contrast (light and dark).
56 Displaying a histogram A histogram is a graph showing the brigh tne ss of a n ima ge. Th e hor izont al ax is shows the bri ghtness, and th e vertical axis shows the numbe r of pixels. The gra ph display indi cates a dark imag e when skewed to the left side, and a br ight ima ge when skew ed to the rig ht side.

When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subject or a snowy scene, the camer a judges that t he subject is bright and may set a darker exposure for the image.

92 Viewing an image previously copied to a computer This op eration is re quired for vi ewing image fil es that have been copied prev iously to a c omputer and already deleted from the “Memory Stick” using the camera. 93 Enjoyin g images on your c omputer • This software is compatible with the DirectX technology . “DirectX” must be installed before using. • A separate environment for operating th e recording device is required in order to write to CD-R s. a T u rn on your computer , and inse rt the sup plie d CD-R OM into the CD-R OM drive.
