11 Getting star ted , Connect th e power cord (ma ins lead) to th e AC Adaptor a nd then to a wa ll outlet (wall socke t). The /CHG lamp (ora nge) lights up w hen chargi ng begi ns, and goe s off w hen chargin g is completed . • After charging the battery pack, d isconnect the A C Adaptor from the DC IN jack of your cam era .
12 Number of images and battery life that can be recorded/ viewed The tables sho w the approximate number of images and the bat tery life that c an be recorded/ viewed when you shoot images in no rmal mode with a fully charged battery pack at a tem perature of 25°C ( 77°F).
13 Getting star ted Using an ext ernal powe r source , Open the jac k cover and connect the AC- LS5 AC Ad ap tor (s up pli ed ) to th e D C IN jack of your camera . Conn ect t he p lug with the v mark facing up. • Connect the AC Adaptor to an easily accessible wall outlet (wall socket) close by .
14 Turni ng on/off your camera , P ress POWE R. The POWE R lamp (gre en) light s up an d the powe r is on. When you turn on your ca mera for th e firs t time, the C lock Set scre en appear s (page 15) . Turning off the powe r Press POWE R again. The PO WER lamp goes out, and th e camera tu rns off.

23 Shooti ng still images Checking the last im age you shot — Quick Review , Press b ( 7 ) on the contro l butt on. To return to the normal shoo ting mode, press light ly on t he shutter button o r press b ( 7 ) ag ain. To delete the image d isplayed on t he screen 1 Pre ss (Del ete) .

28 Shooting images with the finder The find er is conveni ent whe n you want to save battery po wer, or whe n it is difficu lt to conf irm the im age usin g the LCD scre en.
29 Shooti ng still images Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode dial to SET UP. The SE T UP scr een appear s. • When im ages are shot with the date and time superimposed, the date and ti me cannot be removed later .

33 View ing still ima ges Viewing images on a TV screen If you w ant to view im ages on a TV scr een, you need a TV wi th a video input jac k and a A/V conn ecting c able (supplie d). The colo r syste m of the TV must ma tch that of your digi tal still camera.
34 Deleting i mages , Set the mode dia l to , an d turn on th e camera. Press b / B on the co ntrol bu tton to sel ect the im age you want to delete. , Press (Del ete). The image has not ye t been delet ed at this poin t. • Y ou cannot delete the protected image (page 63).

42 Choosing an aut o focus method There are two Auto Focus f uncti ons: “ A F range fi nder frame” which sets the foc us position ac cordi ng to the subjec t position and size, a nd “AF mode” which sets th e focu s oper atio n acco rding to the AF response a nd the batt ery consum ption.
43 Advanced still i mage sh ooting Choosing a focus operation —AF Mode Mode dial: SET UP You ca n select from the fol lowing thre e focu s modes for your c amera.
44 Shooting techniques Even if it is difficult to foc us in AF shooting because the subject is not in th e center of t he frame, you can focus in this situation using Center AF . For e xamp le, when you are shooting two hu man subjects, and there is a gap between them, the camera may focus on the background visible in the gap.
45 Advanced still i mage sh ooting c Sel ect 9 (Foc us) with b / B , then sel ect the dist ance to the subject with v / V . Y ou can se lect from th e followi ng dist ance set tings. 0.5m, 1.0m, 3. 0m, 7 .0m, ∞ (unlimi ted dist ance ) To return to auto focus mode In s tep 3 , sele ct 9 (Focus), then select [Mult i AF] or [Cen ter AF] .
46 Displaying a histogram A histogram i s a graph showing the brig htness o f an image . The hor izontal axis shows the brig htness, an d the vertical axi s shows the numbe r of pixels.
47 Advanced still i mage sh ooting • appears in the following cases: – When r ecording in the smart zoom range – When the im age size is [4.5M(3:2)] (DSC- P10/P12) or [2.8M(3:2)] (DSC- P8) – Whe n rotatin g a still image • The histogr am before recording represents the histogram of th e image displayed on the LC D screen at the time.
48 Shooting three images with the exposure shif ted — Exposure B racket (DSC-P1 0/ P12 o nl y) Mode dial: / /SCN The came ra records three imag es in succe ssion, each with th e exposu re valu e shifte d. The exposur e compens ation va lue can be se t between ±1.
49 Advanced still i mage sh ooting • Y ou cannot us e the flash in this mode. • During shooting i n this mode, t he images are not displayed on the screen. Compose the image before pressing t he shutter button. • The focus and white bala nce are adjusted for the fi rst image, and t hese settings ar e also used for the other images.
50 • U nder fluor escent lights that fli cker , the white balance adjustment function may not work correctly even th ough you select (fluorescent). • Wh en the flash strobes, the m anual setting i s canceled, and the im age is recorded in [Auto] mode (except in (Fl ash) mode).
51 Advanced still i mage sh ooting Shooting multiple frames — Clip Mot ion Mode dial: You c an shoot a nu mber of co nsecut ive still images (GIF animati on). The GIF format has a smal l file size, maki ng it conve nient for crea ting hom e pages o r att aching ima ges to e-mail .

Each time you press the shut ter button in this mo de, the c amera rec ords th ree (DSC- P10/P12) or two (DSC-P8) image s in succession.

A llows you t o shoot sharp i mages of people in dark pl aces with out losing the dark a tmosphe re of the su rroundi ngs. Th e shutter speed becomes slower, so we recom mend t hat y ou use a tripod to pre vent shaking.

76 Installing “Image Transfer” You can u se the “Imag e Trans fer” soft ware to copy im ages to your co mputer automa tically when you con nect t h e came r a to your c omputer with the supplied USB cabl e. a Cl ick [C ybe r-sh ot] o n th e model selection screen .
77 Enjoying images on yo ur c omputer g Click [Finish]. Th e “Insta llSh ield Wizard” screen closes. If you wish to co ntinue w ith the installa tion o f “Image Mixer, ” click [Ima geMix er] on the insta lling menu screen and then fo llow t he pro cedure.

88 Shooting st ill images/ movies The battery remaining indicat or is inco rrect, or sufficient battery rema ining i ndic ato r is displayed but the pow er runs out soon. • You hav e used the cam era for a long ti me in an extreme ly hot or a n extr emely cold lo cation.
89 Troubles hooting The im age is out of focu s. • The subject is too close. • (Fireworks mode), (La ndsca pe m ode) or (T wil ight mo de) is s ele cted for the Sc ene Selec tion fun ction . • The focus pr eset func tion is sele cted. p Record in the macro recordi n g mode.
