9 ControlBasic techniques for better images Hints for preventing blur The camera moved accidentally when you took the picture. This is called “Camera shake”. On the other hand, if the subject mo ved when you took the picture, it is called “subject blur”.
10 ControlBasic techniques fo r better images Y ou can cr eate various images b y adjusting th e exposure and the ISO sensitivity . Exposure is the amount of light that the camera w ill receive when you release the shutter .
11 ControlBasic techniques for better images Adjusting ISO Sensitivity (Recommended E xposure Index) ISO sensitivity is a speed rating for recording med ia that incorp orates an image sensor that receiv es light. Even when the e xposure is the same, images dif fer depending on the ISO sensitivity .
12 ControlBasic techniques fo r better images The apparent color of the subject is affected by the lighting conditions. Example: The color of an image affected by light sources The color tones are adjusted automati cally in the auto adjustment mode. Howe ver , you can adjust color tones ma nually with [ White Bal] (page 57).
13 ControlBasic techniques for better images The default settings are marked with . 1) Images are recorded in 3:2 as pect ratio, same as photograph printin g paper or postcards, etc. 2) Both edges of the image m ay be cut off when printing (page 122).

18 Identifying parts Lens hood/Adaptor ring A Lens hood B Adaptor ring Attaching the lens hood When you shoot in bright l ighting conditions, such as outdoors, we recommend that you use the lens hood to reduce the image quality deterioration caused by unnecessary light.
19 Identifying parts Storing the lens hood The lens hood can be a ttached in the reverse direction to store it with the camera when it is not in use. Position the lens hood as sho wn below and turn the lens hood clockwise until it clicks.

24 Changing the screen display Each time you press the v (DISP) button, the display changes as follows. • If you view images in bright outside light, adjust the brightness of the LCD backl ight up. Howe ver , the battery power may decrease faster under such condition.
25 Using the internal memor y The camera has approximately 31 MB of internal memory . This memory is not remov able. Even when there is no “Memory Stick Duo” inse rted in the camer a, you can record images using this internal memory . • Movies with the image size set t o [640(Fine)] cannot be recorded usin g the internal memory.

31 Basic Operat ions Shooting still images (Scene Selection) The Scene Selection mode has two ways to be selected, modes selected from the mode dial and modes selected from the menu sc reen, and the a vailable modes differ . 32 Shooting still images (Scen e Selection) Scene Selection modes The following modes are predetermine d to match the scene conditions. * When you shoot images using (Twilight Portrait) , (Twili ght) or (Fireworks) mode, the shutter speed is slower. To prevent a blurring , use of a tripod is recommended.
33 Basic Operat ions Shooting still images (Scene Selection) Functions you can use in Scene Selection For shooting an image appropriately accordi ng to the scene condition , a combination of functions is determined by th e camera. Some functions are not available, depending on the Scene Selection mode.
34 Shooting in the dark (Night Shot) (DSC-H9 only) The Night Shot function lets you shoot subjects in the dark places without using the flash such as camp scenes at night or nocturnal plants and a nimals. Note that imag es recorde d using the Night Shot function will become greenish.
35 Basic Operat ions Using the wheel dial The wheel dial is used to cha nge the setting v alues when shooti ng with the manual adjustment modes (shutter speed priority mode, aperture priority mode, manual exposu re mode), ISO sensitivity adjustment, the focus meth od adjustment or the EV adjustment.
36 Shooting with manual adjustment The camera automatically adju sts the focus and the exposure, howe ver , you can manually adjust these settings. The function in shooti ng mode are describe d below . Y ou can change the aper ture value and shutter speed combination while keeping the b rightness fix ed .

38 Shooting with manual adjustment • If the shutter speed is set at 1/3 second or slower , th e NR slow shutter function activates automatically to reduce the pictur e noise and appears.

41 Basic Operat ions Shooting with man ual adjustment 3 Select the de sired focus m ethod with the w heel dial. 4 Press z . • AF stands for Auto F ocus. • When you use Digital Zoom or AF Il luminator, the nor mal AF range f inder frame is disable an d a new AF range finder frame is displayed by a dotted line.
42 Shooting with manual adjustment T o set the Flexible Spot AF 1 Select the AF range finder f rame indica tor, then select (Flexible Spot AF). The color of the AF rang e finder frame ch anges from wh ite to yel low . 2 Move the AF range finder frame to th e point you want t o focus on with v / V / b / B on the c ontrol button, then press z .
43 Basic Operat ions Viewing images 1 Press (Playbac k) b utton. • If you press (Playback) when the camera is powe red off, the camera is turned on automatically and set to playback mode. T o switch to the shooting mode, press (Playback) again. 2 Select an image with b / B on the control button.
44 Viewing images Viewing an index screen Press (Index) to display the index sc reen while a still image is displayed. Select an image with v / V / b / B .
45 Basic Operat ions Deleting images 1 Press (Playbac k) button. 2 Press MENU while display in single-image mode or in in dex mode. 3 Select [Delete] with v on the control b utton. 4 Select the desired deletion method with b / B from among [This Image], [Multiple Images] and [All I n This Folder], then p ress z .
46 Deleting images When you select [This Image] Deletes the selected image. Select [OK] with v , t hen press z . When you select [M ultiple Images] Selects and deletes multiple images at once. 1 Select the images you want to delete , then press z . mark is chec ked in the che ckbox of the image.
47 Basic Operat ions Learning the various functions – HOME/Menu The HOME screen is the basic screen used fo r accessing the various functions you can access the HOME screen regardless of the shootin g/viewing mode. 1 Press HOME to display the HOME screen.

92 Copying images to your computer • W ith W indows XP , the AutoPlay wizard appears on the desktop . “Connecting to Mass Stor age... ” appears on the screen of the camera. When a USB connection is established for the first time, your co mputer automatically runs a program to recognize the camera .
