1 Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Introducing the SUR-20 Congr atulations on y our purchase of the Sima SUR-20 Universal Re mote Co ntrol. T he SUR-20 is a digital univer sal remote contr ol that is easy to use, enabling y ou to control all of your electr onic devi ces equipped w ith an infra-red (IR) remote.

Chapter 1 —Identifying Components 3 Identify ing components Please refer to the f ollowing illustrations to identify the features of the SUR-20. This section prov ides an overv iew of the SUR-20’s features and control s. Refer to Chapters 3-8 for detail ed descriptions on using the LCD panel and contr ols.
4 Chapter 2 Getting Started This chapter will guide y ou through the steps for inserting the batteries and using the many features. Batteries The SUR-20 operates on four AAA batteri es (not included). Batter ies must be inserted before y ou can operate the SUR- 20.

The SUR-20 Use r’s Manual 6 The LCD (Liquid Cr y stal Display) Turning the LCD on. Using the LCD t ouch screen is easy. Simply touch the screen to activate it. The touch scr een reduces the number of but tons by changing it s config uration f or each device selected.
Chapter 2 —Getting Started 7 SUR-20 touch screen buttons The touch scr een buttons enable you to operate t he SUR-20. Use these buttons t o program codes fr om your existing remotes, control your devices and set up command sequences called macr os. You will hear a beep when y ou press a button.

Chapter 3 —Changing the LCD Layout 9 You w ill hear a beep and see the password screen to the right. Note: This screen prevents you from accidentally modifying your SUR-20. TIP: To ex it the password screen , touch any other button once. The SUR- 20 will return to its normal operation screen in 15 sec.

Chapter 3 —Changing the LCD Layout 11 The A UX device button The AUX dev ice button is eq uipped w ith a special feature that no other button has. The control buttons on the AUX dev ice screen can easily be made i dentical to the control buttons on any other devi ce screen.
12 Chapter 4 Chapter 4 Chapter 4 Chapter 4 The Learning function Overv iew : In this chapter you w ill learn how to teach the SUR-20 codes used by your other remote control s. The SUR-20 has the ability to learn how to operate any infra-red contr olled dev ice.
Chapter 4 —The Learning Function 13 Using the learning function To teach the codes f rom your remote, set both remotes on a flat sur face f acing each ot her. Be sure t o point your device’s remote cont rol at t he SUR-20’s learning eye, which is located at the bott om of the unit.

Chapter 4 —The Learning Function 15 Select the device you want to operate. Press that device screen button. TIP : You can ex it this operation by pressing the LEARN key at any time. Line up your remote control and the SUR-20 learning eye, according to the diagram at right.

The SUR-20 User’s Man ual 18 The device screen appears again, with the LEARN icon above the LEARN button. The POW ER button icon is blinking, to wait for a signal from your device’s remote control. Chapter 6 – The Delete Function 27 Press each number button until it disappears. The touch screen appears again, with the DELE TE icon above the DELET E button. Delete icon Press the device screen button to select the device for which y ou want to delete data.
The SUR-20 User’s Man ual 28 Press the button whose data y ou want to delete. You will hear a beep and see the OK icon. The button’s data has been deleted. Note: Pressing the button deletes only the taught data; it does not remove the button. To learn how to remove buttons, refer to Changing the LCD Layout in Chpt.
Chapter 6 – The Delete Function 29 Press the device screen button to select the device whose data y ou want to delete . You w ill hear two beeps and see the OK icon. The taught data for the entire device has been erased. To ex it the delete function, press the LEARN button to return to normal operation.
30 Chapter 7 Chapter 7 Chapter 7 Chapter 7 Macro Function A macro is simply a series of commands. The MACRO feat ure enables you to initiate a seq uence of up t o 25 commands with a single butt on. You can create a m acro on any control button. Remember, however, assigning a m acro eliminates the but ton’s original function.
Chapter 7 – Macro Function 31 Press each number button until it disappears. The LEARN icon will appear above the LEARN button. First, select a device screen. For this example, w e have chosen the AUX screen. A. Press the A UX button. B. Press 1. You w ill hear three beeps.
The SUR-20 User’s Man ual 32 etc… will not be activated as the macro commands are being entered. The macro only w orks when the SUR-20 is in its normal operational mode. Press the power button. This w ill power the T V on when the macro is running.
Chapter 7 – Macro Function 33 and sending the tape play command. Push the MACR O button to scroll through the 3 options: A = 2 sec. B = 5 sec. and C = 10 sec. Select the 2-second delay (fig. A.). Note: You can set a time delay betw een any tw o commands.

The SUR-20 User’s Man ual 36 Press each number button until it disappears. You w ill see the screen to the right. It enables you to set the length of time that the LCD backlight stays on after touching the LCD panel. Tw o buttons showing the current setting will be flashing.
Chapter 8 – Special Features 37 The SUR- 20 detects the level of ambient light and adjusts the backlight to respond according to the setting in this screen. Press the up arrow key to increase the sensitivity of the backlight to the ambient lighting .
The SUR-20 User’s Man ual 38 Turning off the beep signal To turn off the beep signal, press any dev ice button twic e. To turn it back on press any other devi ce button twice . If you don’t hear a beep when you press the screen, y ou may have deactivated the beep.
