13 As soon a s you c onnect the FRI TZ!WL AN USB Stic k N to your c omputer, the security settings of your WLAN are im- plem ent ed in th e FRITZ !WLAN c o ntr ol sof twa re and then deleted from the Stick. The AVM Stick & Surf logo a ppears and a WLAN connection to your FRITZ!Bo x is estab lished automatically.
14 3 I nsta llati on Installing F RITZ!WLAN USB Stick N The FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N can be installed in the operating systems Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit editi on), Windo ws Vista (32-bit o r 64-bit editio n) and W indow s XP (3 2-bit or 64-bi t editio n).
15 5. Then click “Y es” (Window s 7) or “C ontinue” (Windows Vista) in the “Us er Account Control” di a- log. The dr iv ers and the c o ntr ol sof twa re for the FRITZ! WLAN U SB St ick N will be in stalled now. If you are prom pted to do so , inser t the FRITZ!WLA N USB Stick N CD an d foll ow the i nstruc- tions on the sc reen.
16 6. In the “Found New Hardw are” window , select “Loc ate and install driver software (rec ommended)”. If Windows reports that the progr am may not have been installed correctly , click “The Program was in- stalled correctly.” or “Cancel”.
17 If an additional Windows dialog ask s if you want to install soft ware not digitally signe d by M icrosoft , click “C ontinue Anyway”. This re quest depend s on the dr iver signature option s set o n your computer. A progres s bar indicat es the progres s and the c onclu- sion of th e instal lation .
18 6. A message appears: “The Wiz ard has finished inst all- ing the software for this device ”. C onclude the instal- lat ion by cl ick ing “Finis h”. Thi s c omplet es th e dri ver ins tal la tion fo r the FRITZ! WLAN USB Stick N. C ontinue readi ng in the next sec- tion, “Info rmation on WLAN Connections”.
19 4 The FRITZ!WLAN C ontro l Software Establis hing and Clearing WLAN C onn ections With the F RITZ !WL AN U SB St ick N you can establish wirel ess ne two rk connections (WLANs) with various WLAN devices. The FRITZ!WLAN con- trol software is av ailable to manag e all these WLAN connections.
20 The mi ddle sec tion di sp lay s the ic on of the WLAN c onn ec- tion as a box with links to th e devi ces on the l eft a nd on the rig ht. Th e small icons in the box display the connec- tion q uality and the encrypti on used.
21 4.2 Estab lishing a WLAN C o nnection With FRITZ! WLAN you can establish WLAN connectio ns to WLAN remo te sites (access points), whi ch can provide ac- cess to DSL, to p rinter s, to mobile tel ephones , PDA s, a nd even to other WLAN cli ents. Direct connections are also possible to oth er FRITZ! WLAN U SB Sti cks.

23 2. Enter the W LAN k ey in the “W LAN k ey” fie ld. All other WL AN part ies of th e ad-hoc connection m ust also enter this k ey. See also the encr yption instructions in the section “Encryption” from page 33. C onfirm the se ttings configured earlier for the ad-hoc network.

25 5 Microsoft WLAN Ser vice Establis hing and Clearing WLAN C onn ections In Windo ws7, Window s Vista and Windows XP from Ser vice Pack 2, th e Microsoft W LAN ser vice WZ C (Wireless Zero C onfiguration ) can be used to man age w ireless d evic es rathe r than the FRI TZ!WLAN pro gram.
26 Enteri ng the ne twork key 3. Enter the n etwork k ey of the WLAN ac ces s poi nt in the “Security k ey” field . Click the “OK” button. On the A V M FRITZ!Bo x family produc ts the netw ork key is pri nted o n th e unde rside o f the de vice.
27 Esta blishing a WLAN C onnec tion (Windows Vista) T o establish a WLAN connect ion in Wi ndows Vista using Microso ft WLAN Servic e (“autom atic WLAN c onfigu ra- tion”), work through the fol lowing step s: 1. Click th e Micros of t WLAN icon in the not ifica ti on area of the task bar and select the option “Connect to a netwo rk”.

30 6M o r e a b o u t W L A N AV M a n d W L A N WLAN (Wireless Loc al Area Network) is a radio technology that allows net works and access t o the Inter net to b e provided with ou t cable co n- nectio ns. This allow s multipl e users to share o ne wireless Inter net con- nect ion .
31 Range The ran ge within a WLA N is highly d epend ent o n th e fol- lowing t hree factors : • the WLAN adapter used, • the structural c onditions , and • the amou nt of ra dio tr affic on th e sam e frequ ency band .
32 The S tandard for S ecurity IEEE 802.1 1i T he WP A2 secu rity me chan is m is de fine d in the IEEE 802. 11i st anda rd. WP A2 is a n exte nsi on of th e fami l- iar security mech anism WP A (Wi-Fi Protected Acc ess). The main fea ture of the extensio n of WPA to WP A2 is th e AES-C CM encryption proc ess.
33 Encr ypti on The most important sec urity sett ing is e ncrypti on. The FRITZ !WLAN U SB Sti ck N su pports t he sec uri ty mec ha- nis ms WE P (Wir ed E quiv ale nt Priv acy), WP A (Wi-Fi Prote ct- ed Access) a nd WPA2 as foll ows : • As part of the W EP mechanism a static k ey is deter - mined to ser ve for the encrypti on of t he user data.
34 6.3 Frequency Range WLAN uses the freque ncy range around 2.4 GHz i n the I SM band or, alternatively , the frequency range at 5 GH z. The frequenc y range used i n your WLAN depen ds on the settings of your W LAN acc ess poi nt.

44 Installing the Patch for WPA2 with Micro soft WL AN Service The co nne ct ion to an access p oi nt cannot be esta blish ed using the Microsoft WLA N Ser vice (WZC) in Windows XP with Se r vice Pack 2.

47 Avoiding WLAN Ch annels wit h DFS The FR ITZ!WL AN USB Stick N los es the WL AN conn ection in the 5- GHz freque ncy band for n o apparen t reason. 8.4 Chec king the IP Setting s A WLAN acc ess point, f or instanc e, a FRITZ!Box WLAN, ha s its own DHCP server, which assigns IP addresses to the co nnec ted co mpu ters.

Click the “ Star t” butto n in th e task ba r an d se lect “C ontro l Pan el / Network an d Internet / V iew Netw ork Status and T asks”. 2. From the “T asks”, select “Manage network c onnec- tions”.
