If the On Line/Error lights red, the printer is experiencing an error , such as jammed paper , no paper , open cover , or uninstalled toner cartridge.

2. 2 S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER Unpacking 1 Re mov e the Printer and all accessories from the packing carton. Make sure that the printer has been pack ed with the following items: N OTES : • If any items are missing or damaged, notify your dealer immediately .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 3 2 Selecting a Location Select a level, stable place with adequate space for air circulation. Allow extr a space for opening cov ers and tray(s). The area should be well- ventilated and away from direct sunlight or sources of heat, cold, and humidity .
2. 4 S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Grasp the front co ver and pull it toward you to open. N OTE : Because the printer is very light, it may move when you use it; for example, when opening/closing the tray or installing/ removing the toner cartridge.
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 5 2 3 Gently shake the cartridge from side to side to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. C AUTIONS : •T o prevent damage, do not expose the toner cartridge to light for more than a few minutes.

N OTE : When printing text at 5% cover age, you can expect a toner cartridge life of approximately 5,000 pages.
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 7 2 Loading Paper Y ou can load appro ximately 250 sheets of paper in the tr ay . 1 Pull the tra y out of the printer . 2 Prepare a stack of paper for loading by flexing or fanning the paper back and forth. Str aighten the edges on a level surface.
2. 8 S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER Y ou can load previously printed paper . The printed side should be facing up with an uncurled edge on top . If you experience problems with paper feed, turn the paper around. Make sure that all four corners are flat in the tr ay .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 9 2 Changing the Paper Size in the Paper Tray To load longer sizes of paper , you need to adjust the paper guides to extend the paper tr ay . 1 Pressing and unlatching the guide lock, slide the paper length guide out completely to extend the paper tr ay to its full length.
2. 10 S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER F or paper sizes smaller than Lette r , adjust the front paper length guide. 3 Pinching the paper width guide as shown, mo ve it toward the stack of paper until it lightly touches the side of the stack. N OTES : • Do not push the paper width guide far enough to cause the materials to warp.
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 11 2 Connecting a Printer Cable For Local Printing To print from your computer in a local en vironment, you need to connect your printer to the computer with either a par allel interface cable or a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable.
2. 12 S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER Using a USB Cable N OTE : Connecting the printer to the USB port of the computer requires a certified USB cable. Y ou will need to buy a USB 2.0 compliant cable that is within 3 m in length. 1 Make sure that both the printer and the computer are turned off .

3 This chapter will help you understand t ypes of paper you can use with your printer and how to properly load paper in the different paper tr ays for the best print qualit y .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 2 Choosing Paper and Other Materials Y ou can print on a v ariety of print materials, such as plain paper , envelopes, labels, tr ansparencies, and so on. See “P aper Specifications” on page F .3. T o get the best possible print quality , use only high-quality copier -grade paper .

U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 4 Guidelines for Paper and Special Materials When selecting or loading paper , envelopes, or other special materials, keep these guidelines in mind: • Attempting to print on damp , curled, wrinkled, or torn paper can cause paper jams and poor print qualit y .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 5 3 Selecting the Output Location The printer has two output locations; the rear output tr ay and the top output tr ay . To use the top output tra y , be sure that the rear output tr ay is closed. T o use the rear output tray , open it.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 6 Printing to the Rear Output Tray (Face up) The printer alwa ys prints to the rear output tr ay if it is open. P aper comes out of the printer face-up , and each time a sheet of paper comes out, it falls down from the printer .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 7 3 2 If you do not w ant to use the rear output tr ay , close the tra y . The pages will stack on the top output tr ay . Loading Paper Proper paper loading helps prev ent paper jams and ensure trouble-free printing. Do not remo ve the paper tr ay while a job is printing.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 8 Using Tray1 or the Optional Tray2 Tr a y1 and the optional T ra y2 can hold up to 250 sheets of paper . See “Sizes and Capacities” on page 3.3 for acceptable paper size and capacities of each tr ay . Load a stack of paper into the tr ay and print.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 9 3 • Load only one size of print material at a time in the Multi-Purpose T ray . •T o prevent paper jams, do not add paper when there is still paper in the Multi-Purpose T ray . This also applies to other t ypes of print materials.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 10 3 Prepare a stack of paper for loading by flexing or fanning the paper back and forth. Str aighten the edges on a level surface. 4 Place paper on the centre of the tr ay with the print side face up . P ay attention to the paper limit mark on the left inside wall of the tr ay .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 11 3 5 Slide the paper width guide and adjust it against the stack of print material without bending. N OTE : Y our printer cannot automatically detect the size of paper loaded in the Multi-Purpose T ray .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 12 Using the Manual Feed Mode If you select Manual Feed in the Source option when changing print settings, you can manually load a sheet of print material in the Multi-Purpose T ray . Manually loading paper can be helpful when you w ant to check the print quality after each page is printed.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 13 3 3 Open the rear output tr ay . 4 When you print a document, y ou must select Manual Feed for Source from the software application, and then select the correct paper size and t ype. 5 Press the Cancel button on the printer to start feeding.

P RINTING T ASKS 4. 2 Printing a Document The following procedure describes the gener al steps required for printing from v arious Windows applications. The exact steps for printing a document may v ary depending on the application programe y ou are using.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 3 4 4 Now you see the Samsung ML -2250 Series Properties window , which allows you to access all the information y ou will need when using your printer . The Layout tab is first display ed. If necessary , select the Orientation option.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 4 7 When you complete setting the properties, click OK until the Print window is display ed. 8 Click OK to start printing. N OTES : •M ost Windows applications will override settings you specify in the printer driver .
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 5 4 Cancelling a Print Job There are two wa ys to cancel a print job. To stop a print job from the control panel: Press the Cancel button on the control panel. The printer will finish printing the page that is mo ving through the printer and delete the rest of the print job .
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 6 Using a Favorite Setting The Favorites option, which is visible on each properties tab , allows you to sa ve the current properties settings for future use. To save a F avorites item: 1 Change the settings as needed on each tab .
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 7 4 Setting Paper Properties Use the following options to set the basic paper handling needs when you access the printer properties. See page 4.2 for more information about accessing printer properties. Click the Paper tab to access v arious paper properties.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 8 Source Make sure that Source is set to the corresponding paper tra y . The Manual Feed source is used when printing to special materials.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 9 4 Using the Toner Save Mode T oner Save mode allows the printer to use less toner on each page. Using this mode will extend the life of y our toner cartridge and reduce your cost per page, but will reduce the print qualit y . This setting is not av ailable with the 1200 dpi setting.

P RINTING T ASKS 4. 11 4 Printing Multiple Pages on One Sheet of Paper (N-Up Printing) Y ou can select the number of pages to print on a single sheet of paper . T o print more than one page per sheet, the pages will appear decreased in size and arr anged on the sheet.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 12 5 Click the Paper tab and select the paper source, siz e, and t ype. 6 Click OK and print the document. Printing a Reduced or Enlarged Document Y ou can scale y our print job on a page. 1 When you change the print settings from y our software application, access the printer properties.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 13 4 Fitting Your Document to a Selected Paper Size This printer feature allows you to scale y our print job to any selected paper size regardless of the digital document siz e. This can be useful when you w ant to check fine details on a small document.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 14 Printing Posters This feature allows you to print a single-page document onto 4, 9 or 16 sheets of paper , for the purpose of pasting the sheets together to form one poster-siz e document. 1 To change the print settings from your softw are application, access the printer properties.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 15 4 Specify an ov erlap in millimeters or inches to mak e it easier to reconstruct the resulting poster . 4 Click the Paper tab and select the paper source, siz e and t ype. 5 Click OK and print the document. Y ou can complete the poster by reconstructing the resulting pages.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 16 2 Click the Extras tab , and select the desired watermark in the Watermark drop-down list. Y ou will see the selected w atermark in the preview image. 3 Click OK and start printing. Creating a Watermark 1 To change the print settings from your softw are application, access the printer properties.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 17 4 4 Select the desired watermark options. Y ou can select the font name, st yle, and size, and grayscale level from the Font Attributes section and set the angle of the watermark from the Message Angle section. 5 Click Add to add a new watermark to the list.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 18 Using Overlays What is an Overlay? An overla y is text and/or images stored in the computer hard disk drive (HDD) as a special file format that can be printed on any document. Ov erlays are often used to tak e the place of preprinted forms and letterhead paper .
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 19 4 4 In the Edit Overla ys window , click Create Overlay . 5 In the Create Overla y window , type a name of up to eight characters in the File name box. Select the destination path, if necessary . (The default is C:F ormOver). 6 Click Save .
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 20 Using a Page Overlay After an overla y has been created, it is ready to be printed with y our document. T o print an overla y with a document: 1 Create or open the document y ou want to print. 2 To change the print settings from your softw are application, access the printer properties.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 21 4 6 If necessary , click Confirm Page Overlay When Printing . If this box is check ed, a message window will appear each time you submit a document for printing, asking y ou to confirm your wish to print an o verlay on your document.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 22 Setting Graphic Properties Use the following gr aphic options to adjust the print qualit y for y our specific printing needs. See page 4.2 for more information about accessing printer properties. Click the Graphics tab to display the properties shown below .
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 23 4 Image Mode Some printed characters or images appear to have jagged or unev en edges. Set this Image Mode option to improve the print quality of your text and image, and make the characters and images appear smoother . The Image Mode option is only a vailable when you select 600 dpi (Normal) in the Resolution option.
P RINTING T ASKS 4. 24 Advanced Options (continued) Property Description 4 TrueType Options This option determines what the driver tells the printer about how to image the text in your document. Select the appropriate setting according to the status of your document.

P RINTING T ASKS 4. 26 Using the Status Monitor If an error occurs while printing, the Status Monitor window appears, showing the error . N OTE s: • The Status Monitor program can only be used if you connect the printer to your computer with the USB cable, or on the network.

P RINTING T ASKS 4. 28 N OTE : When the Status Monitor balloon appears to indicate an error , you can cancel the current print job or see the corresponding solution. If you select Cancel Printing , turn the printer off and then click OK . It may take several minutes.

M AINTAINING Y OUR PRINTER 5. 2 Maintaining the Toner Cartridge Toner cartridge storage To get the maximum results from the toner cartridge, k eep the following guidelines in mind. • Do not remove the toner cartridge from its package until ready for use.
M AINTAINING Y OUR PRINTER 5. 3 5 Redistributing Toner When toner is low , faded or light areas may appear on a printed page. Y ou may be able to tempor arily improve the print qualit y by redistributing the toner . The following procedures may allow y ou to finish the current print job before replacing the toner cartridge.
