1. 6 Introduction Printer Features Y our QwikLaser 6100 is a compact, easy to use laser printer designed for the small office envir onment. It is designed to provide years of high qual- ity , high performance printing.

2. 1 Printer Setup Installing the T oner Cartridge 1. Open the printer cover by pressing the cover release button. 2. Raise the printer cover . 3. Unpack the toner cartridge, and carefully pull the sealing tape completely out of cartridge.
2. 2 Printer Setup 4. Gently shake the cartridge from side to side 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. 5. Find the cartridge slots inside the printer , one on each side. 6. Grasp the handle and slide the cartridge down between the cartridge slots, until it drops into place.

Notes: • Do not expose cartridge to direct sunlight or str ong room light. • T o avoid damaging photo-sensitive drum, never open drum shutter . • T o avoid damaging cartridge, complete cartridge installation as quickly as possible.
2. 4 Printer Setup Loading Paper into the Cassette Y ou can load appr oximately 250 sheets of paper in the paper cassette. If you purchase an option cassette and attach it below the standar d paper cassette (see ‘Option Cassette’ on page 6.14), you can also load paper in the option cassette.

2. 11 Printer Setup Printer Driver Installation Use the following instructions to install the PCL6 and/or PCL5e printer drivers on a W indows-based PC. The printer driver enables you to control the QwikLaser 6100’s featur es and capabilities (see the table on the next page).

T o operate your printer , you must install a printer driver , which translates data from your application into data the printer understands.
2. 15 Printer Setup Macintosh Installation 1. Make sure that the Macintosh and your printer ar e connected to each other with the proper cable. T urn on the printer and Macintosh computer . 2. Insert the QwikLaser 6100 CD-ROM shipped with your printer into your CD-ROM drive.

3. 1 Print Media Information Selecting Print Media One of the most important things you can do to assure the best possible print quality from your printer is to select the corr ect paper . Y our printer produces letter quality output on most plain bond papers, including cotton bond and photocopying papers; it does not requir e special papers.
3. 2 Print Media Information Basic Guidelines When selecting or loading paper , envelopes, or other special media, keep these guidelines in mind: • Attempting to print on damp, curled, wrinkled, or torn paper can cause paper jams and poor print quality .
3. 3 Print Media Information How T o Adjust Paper Guides LENGTH GUIDES There ar e two main and one auxiliary guide as shown below to adjust for the paper length. One of mains is for legal, A4, or folio size, and the other is for letter (L TR), executive (EXEC), or B5 size paper .
3. 4 Print Media Information When you load letter , executive, or B5 size paper , it is recommended to use the auxiliary guide with the main guide before loading paper . T o adjust the auxiliary guide, r emove the guide , then insert it to the appropriate position .
3. 5 Print Media Information Using the MP(Multi-Purpose) T ray The MP tray is located in the front of your printer . It can be closed when you are not using it, making the printer mor e compact. The MP tray can hold several sizes and types of paper , such as transparencies, post car ds, note cards, and envelopes.
3. 6 Print Media Information Loading Paper into the MP T ray 1. T o open the MP tray , hold both sides of the tray and pull it out toward you. 2. Pull the extender to extend the tray to its full-length position to hold longer paper . 3. Prepare the print material for loading.
3. 7 Print Media Information • For transparencies: Hold the transparencies by the edges and avoid touching the print side. Fan the stack of transparencies to prevent feeding failures. Be careful not to scratch or leave fingerprints on the print side.
3. 8 Print Media Information 5. Load one type of print material in the MP tray . Do not mix types. See the following directions to load each type of print material. • Load paper with the left edge of the stack against the left edge of the tray with the print side face up.
3. 9 Print Media Information • Load letterhead paper with the design face up. The top edge of the sheet with the logo should enter the printer first. XXXXXXXXXX 6. Slide the print material into the MP tray as far as it will go. Do not force it. For cing causes buckling of the print material.
3. 10 Print Media Information Closing the MP T ray If you want to close the MP tray , push the extender straight back to collapse the MP tray to its short-length position.
3. 11 Print Media Information Using Rear Output T ray If you open the rear output tray , the printed paper is placed on the tray with the printed side facing up. If you experience paper jams, especially when you load paper , envelopes, or other special media into the MP tray , use the rear output tray .

4. 1 Printing Printing in Windows The following procedur e describes the general steps requir ed for printing from various W indows applications. The exact steps for printing a document may vary depending on the application program you ar e using. Refer to your software application’s documentation for the exact printing procedur e.
4. 2 Printing Configuring the PCL Drivers Selecting Y our Printer T o use all of the featur es of your QwikLaser 6100, make sure the PCL6 driver is selected as the default printer . When you install the printer driver , QwikLaser 6100 is automatically set as the default printer .
4. 3 Printing Setting Properties The QwikLaser 6100 printer driver ’s Print Setup dialog box allows you to set various printer properties. Note: Most Windows applications will override settings you specify in the printer driver .
4. 4 Printing PCL6 Driver Features Paper/Output Use this tab to change the number of copies, page orientation, paper size, paper source and output format. Source setting identifies the default paper sour ce. Option cassette source is available if the option cassette is installed.
4. 5 Printing Manual Duplex Printing Y our QwikLaser 6100 will print duplex (two-sided) pages by specifying duplex printing from the PCL6 driver when you print fr om your applications. This feature will also print an instr uction sheet to assist you. T o select this option, check Instruction Page .
4. 6 Printing Booklet Printing Y our Samsung 6100 Series PCL6 driver gives you the capability to print your document in a booklet format. T o perform booklet printing, follow these steps: 1. Ensure the Samsung 6100 Series PCL6 driver is the default printer .

4. 9 Printing CONFIG Use this tab to control the following printer featur es: • Power Save determines the length of time the printer waits after a job is printed before it goes to a r educed power state. If the printer is used frequently , select OFF which keeps the printer r eady to print with the minimum warm-up time.
4. 10 Printing INTERF ACE Use this tab to control the following printer featur es (when using the serial port only): • Baud rate (bps) sets the rate at which data is being sent to or from the computer . • Robust XON sets XON/XOFF pacing (if the handshaking protocol uses XON/XOFF pacing).

5. 1 T roubleshooting Cleaning the Printer This section contains some general guidelines for keeping your QwikLaser 6100 clean. Do not use ammonia-based sprays or volatile solvents such as thinner to clean the printer, as these can damage the printer surface.
5. 2 T roubleshooting Clearing Paper Jams By carefully selecting paper types and loading them pr operly , you should be able to avoid most paper jams. If paper jams occur , an error message appears on the Status Monitor which pops up automatically each time you use the printer .

5. 9 T roubleshooting Solving Printing Problems If you have any problems with the operation of your QwikLaser 6100, refer to T able 5.1 for suggested remedies. Problem The printer does not print. Paper is not fed into the printer . Possible Cause Remedy Y our printer is not selected as the default printer .

6. 1 Printer Options Introduction Y our QwikLaser 6100 is a full-featur ed laser printer that has been opti- mized to meet most of your printing needs.
6. 2 Printer Options Memory and PostScript SIMMs Additional printer memory and the PostScript option are pr ovided on SIMMs (single inline memory modules).

6. 8 Printer Options Serial/LocalT alk Card or Network Card The Serial/LocalT alk option lets you connect your QwikLaser 6100 to a PC or Macintosh serial interface, or to a Macintosh LocalT alk network. T o use the serial connection, a standar d 9-pin serial cable is requir ed.
