Pr eface About the ASMI G 4 Mod ule The ASMI modu le (ASMI G4) p rovides remo te server man agement cap abilities: you can use the ASMI add-on card to man age and m onitor compo nents in you r servers. The ASMI G4 o ffers a comp rehensive hardware solution for server ma nagemen t.

Chapter 1. Th e Quick Start Guid e The Remote Console will behave exactly the same way as if you we re sitting directly in f ront of the screen of you r remote system. That means that both the keyboard and mouse can be used in the usual way . Open the console by choosing the appropriate link in the navigation frame of the HTML frontend .
Chapter 2. Intr oduction General Information The ASMI modu le is an integrated solution for your server system. Based on an emb edded operating system, the ASMI G4 add-o n card provides both exceptional stability and perma nent a v ailability even when your server is down or powered off.

Chapter 3. ASMI Installation Guide About the ASMI Add-On Card The ASMI add-o n car d r edirects local keyboard, mo use and video data to a rem ote ad ministration console. All data is transmitted u sing the TCP/IP proto col family . The ASMI add-on card is especially useful in a multi- administrator environmen t.
Chapter 3. ASMI Installa tion Guide Connecting the Ethernet The ASMI add-o n card has a dedicated RJ45 Ether net connector - this has to be pr ovided by the nativ e system. The conn ector may be used eithe r as a 10 0 M bps 1 00Base-TX connectio n or as a 10 Mbp s 10B ASE-T connectio n.
Chapter 4. ASMI G 4 Module Configuration Initial Con figuration The ASMI modu le’ s commu nication inter faces a re all based on TCP/IP . It comes pre-co nfigured with the IP configu ration listed in T ab le 4-1 . Additio nally you can do some simple co nfiguration u sing the serial interface.

Strong security is only assured by using a key length of 128 Bit. Some old browsers do not offer a stro ng 1 28 Bit encryptio n algorithm .

Chapter 6. Menu Op tions Drive Redirection The Drive Redirection is another possibility to use a local disc drive on the remo te computer . W ith Driv e Redirection you d o not have to use an image file but m ay work with a drive from your local com puter on the remote ma chine.
Chapter 6. Menu Op tions Drive Redirection Options As shown in Figure 6-6 the fo llowing options may b e en abled: Disable Drive Redirection If ena bled the Dr iv e Redirection is switched o ff. Force read -only con nections If en abled the Write Suppo rt for the Drive Redirection is switched off.

Device This is the a ddress (either the DNS n ame or the IP ad dress) of the ASMI m odule you would like to connect to . Port This is the network port. By default the ASMI module uses the remo te console por t (#443) here.

Please note that the who le drive is shared with th e remote comp uter, not on ly one partition. If yo u hav e a hard disc with m ore than on e partitio n all d rive letters that belo ng to th is disc will be r edirected.

Chapter 6. Menu Op tions Exit/Hide When the "E xit" button is pressed, the Drive R edirection software is closed. I f a Drive Redirection connection is acti ve, the con nection will b e pr operly closed b efore th e ap plication term inates.

Chapter 6. Menu Op tions IP Access Control This section con tains settings for the ASMI m odule’ s built-in fire wall. Th e firewall can b e ena bled or disabled. When enabled the firew all allows you to explicitly b lock or allow co nnections f rom certain client IP addresses.

Cert ificate Settings The ASMI mod ule uses the Secure Soc ket Layer (SSL) protoco l for any encrypted network traffi c between itself and a co nnected client. Du ring the co nnection establishm ent th e ASMI mo dule h as to expose its identity to a client using a cryp tograph ic certificate.

Chapter 6. Menu Op tions Common nam e This is the network n ame of the A SMI mod ule once it is installed in th e user’ s network (usually the fully qualified domain name ). It is identical to the name that is used to access th e ASMI module with a web b rowser b ut without the prefix "h ttp://".

Each of those events belong to an event group which can be acti vated separately .

Menu Op tions W arning If the reset button on the HTML fro ntend is used to restar t the ASMI module, al l lo gging informati on is saved p er manentl y and is av ailable after the ASMI module ha s been star ted. If the ASMI modu le loses power or a har d reset is performed all logg ing dat a wi ll be lost.

Chapter 6. Menu Op tions Update Firmware Figure 6-39 . Update Firmware The ASMI modu le is a co mplete stand alone co mputer . The sof tware it r uns is called the firmware. T he firmware of the ASMI mo dule can be upd ated remotely in order to install new functionality , bug fixes or special features.

This inv olves the both keyboard and mouse, the video en gine and the ASMI mo dule itself. Resetting the car d itself is mainly n eeded to activ ate a newly update d firmware.
Appendix A. Frequentl y Asked Questions 1. The mouse does no t react correctly in the applet screen. The mouse is not in sy nc with the mouse of the host. Navigate your mo use pointer into the u pper left co rner of the ap plet screen an d move it slightly f orth and back.
