5 INSTALLAT ION MOUNTING THE MICROPHONE HO LDER Usin g a Ph illip s s crewdriv er and the supp lied screws and was hers, attach the suppl ied microphone holder to the CB’s left or right side either horizontally or v er ti ca lly . MOUNTING THE TRC-445 The most common m ounting location for this CB is u nder a vehicle ’s dashb oard.
6 4. Attach the CB to the mounting bracket using the rubber washers and mounting knobs . CONNECTING THE MICROPHON E 1. Align the slo t on top of the m icro- phone’s plug with the ri dge inside the MIC jack . Then fu lly in ser t t he plug into the j a ck.
7 Connect ing an Ant enna Onc e you choose an antenna, follow the mounting instructions s upplied wit h the antenn a. Route the ant enna c able to the CB, t hen screw the cable into the AN- TENNA jack on the back of the CB. Cautions : • Do no t run t he cab le over sha rp edges or moving parts that mi ght damag e it.
8 USING THE CB AS A BASE STATION Although this CB is des igned for m obile use, you can also use it as a base s ta- tion. For base-station installation, you need the following items. • 12-volt D C po wer supply (such as Cat. No. 22-504) Cautio n : Most 12-v olt DC power supplies plug into a standard A C outlet to produce DC power .
9 CONNECT ING OPTIO NAL EXTERNAL SP EAKERS You can connec t y our CB to a n e xternal CB speaker and a publi c-address spea ker. Note : When you connec t an external or PA s peaker, the CB’s i nternal speak er automat ically disconnec ts .
10 ADJUSTING THE STAND I NG W AV E RATIO Most antennas are factory tuned . How- ever, you can us ually improve rad io per- formance by tuning your antenna system t o the CB’s RF output pow er us- ing the S WR meter on this rad io.
11 STANDING W AVE RATIO CHART The id eal standing wav e ratio (SWR) reading is a 1:1 ratio, or a me ter reading of 1 on the SWR m eter’s top s cale (which you c an usuall y get only in labora t ory test con di- tions). A 1.5:1 to 2:1 S WR rat io is excell ent for mos t mobile CB anten na applications.
12 OPE R AT ION Before you start using your CB, you should know how t o use i t effectively and courteously. “CB Operation Tips” con tains inf orma tion that w ill h elp y ou get more enjoyme nt from using your CB. Cautio n : Do not attem pt to us e your CB without first connecting an antenna.
13 6. T o manually tune chann els, turn the tuning control at t he right end of t he control panel t o select a chann el. The channe l number appe ars on the display , and the SWR/RF/signal meter s hows th e signal strength. Notes : • If you turn the tuning control sl i ghtl y to th e le ft o r rig ht, the TRC-445 rapidly scans down or up.
14 Note : Do not speak too lou dly w hen transmitting. It does n ot ma ke your signal any s tronger , and might dis- tort y ou r transmission. 3. When you finish transm itting, release the m icrophone ta lk button. The TX/RX indicat or changes to green.
15 We ath er Alert In the eve nt of severe weather condi- tions, the Nat ional We ather Service broadc asts a speci al signal tone (1050 Hz) that th e TRC-445 sounds i f it is turned on. When t he radio receives this signal to ne, the WX/ALER T indic ato r glows red in the CB or P A m ode and or- ange in the WX mod e.

21 REPLACING THE FUSES The T RC-445’s 2-am p fuses he lp pr o- tect y our CB from power s urges and short circui ts. • I f the red wire’s fuse is blown, replace it wi th a 2 -amp, fast-acting glass fuse, such as Cat. No. 270- 1007. • I f the oran ge wire’s fuse is blown, replace it wi th a 1 -amp, fast-acting glass fuse, such as Cat.
