3 Line Status Indicators — show if a li ne is avai lable, i n use, or on hol d. Auto Talk — lets you set the ET-686 so you can an swer a call by l ifting the hand - set from the base. Any Key Answer — let s you set the ET - 686 so y ou ca n press an y key to answe r a call on the base or on the handset when it is away from t he base.

6 INSTALLA TION MOUNTING THE P H ONE You can p lace the ET–6 86’s bas e on a desk or tabl e, or mount i t on a standar d wall plate or dire ctly on a wa ll.
7 Note: If you c onnect the phone to a two-line phone jack with a tw o-line cord, do no t conne ct a cord to the TEL LINE 2 jack or the phone wil l not operate prop erly . Instea d, you can connect a nother phone devi ce, such as a fax machine or modem.
8 1. Insert the two tabs at the top of the narrow end of the supp lied bra cket into the b ase’s upper tab slots a s shown, then press do wn on the bracke t’s latches and ins ert th em into the c lip slo ts.
9 4. Route the ada pter ’s cor d throu gh the narrow g roove on the brack et. If you a re us ing t wo phon e cord s, route t he sec ond cor d thro ugh one of the wide grooves on the br acket.
10 7. Press and lift ou t the hands et holder , fli p it over as shown, then snap it b ack into place. 8. Raise the base ’s antenna to a verti - cal p osition. CONNECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK The ET-6 86 comes wi th a recha rgeable nickel -cadmium b attery p ack in the handset but not co nnecte d.
11 Notes: • When you first us e the phon e after chargi ng or rechar ging the batt ery pack, the phone might not work and you might he ar an error tone when you pres s LINE 1 or LINE 2 . If this happens, r eturn the ha ndset to the base for about fi ve seco nds.
12 2. Press LINE 1 on the base. The LINE 1 SPEAK ER indicat or lights . Then listen fo r the dial tone. 3. Pr ess any num ber othe r than 0 on the base k eypad. Note: If your p hone system re quires that you di al an acce ss co de ( 9 , for example ) before you dial an out side number , do not press the acc ess code e ither .
13 OPERATION Note : You ca n use t he keypa d on ei ther the handset or the base to operate the ET-686. T o make a call wi th the s peak- erphone, you must use the bas e’s key- pad; to ma ke a call with the hands et, you m ust use th e hands et’s ke ypad.

15 Using Mute While tal king on the s peaker phone, you can te mporaril y tur n off th e ET-686’ s mi - crophon e by pres sing MUTE so t he ot h er party cann ot hear you. The SPEAK ER indicato r flashes red when a li ne is mut- ed. Pr ess MUTE again to resume your conver satio n.
16 USING B OTH TH E HANDSET AND SPEAKERPHONE To use the han dset to join a call at the base, or to use the b ase to j oin a c on- versat ion at the h andset, p ress t he li ne button for th e line that i s in use. Y ou hear a busy tone. Be fore the tone ends, press the line b utton ag ain.
17 2. Press INTCM on the h andset o r INTERCOM on the base to pag e the other ke ypad. The two o utside l ines are autom ati- cal ly plac ed on ho ld, but the pa rties on both lin es can tal k with each other . 3. T o answer th e page, press INTCM on the hand set, or INTERCOM on the base, then press CONF .

21 USING A HEADSET You can make or answer cal ls with hands-f ree conven ience using an op- tional h eadset (avail able at your local RadioShac k store) th at has a 3 / 32 -inch plug. To connec t the headse t, pull ope n the rubber cover ma rked on t he side of the handse t, then inser t the 3 / 32 -inch pl ug into the j ack.

23 If the base los es power whi le the hands et is off of it, the securi ty access- protec tion code migh t change. Resto re power to the bas e, then place the handset bac k on the base and leave it there for a few s econds. If you still have problems , discon nect the ph one.

25 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you foll ow the in structi ons in “ Conne ct- ing and Charg ing the Batter y Pac k” on Page 10, the batt ery pack shou ld last about a year .
