6 INSTALL ATION Follow this seque nce to ensure y our phone will work properly. • Install the batteries (see “Installing Backup Bat t eries” ). • Reset the phone (see ). • Mount the phone (see ). If your phone doe s not work, discon nect it from the phone line, rem ove t he bat- teries, the n repeat t he above seq uence.
7 MOUNT ING THE PHO NE You can place the phone on a desk or table, mo unt it on a standard wa l l plate, or mount it directly on a wall. Select a location that is: • near an AC outlet • near a modular phone line jack • out o f the way of no r mal act ivit ies Notes: • Y our telephone c onnects directly to a modu lar phone l ine jack.

P lug one end of the supplie d short modular p hone cord into t he TEL. LINE jack on t he phone. 2. Route t he co r d through the s train- relief slot on t he back of the phone.
9 On a W all To mount the System 999 directly on the wall, you need two screws ( not supplied) with heads that fit into the key hol e slots on th e bottom of the bas e. Note: Check for the prop er v iewing an- gle of t he liq uid crystal display before mounting this syst em to a wall.
10 CONNECTING THE HANDSET Plug o ne end of t he supplied c oiled cord into the modular jack on the side of the phone, and t he other end in to the modu- lar jack on the handset. Notes: • Y our local RadioS hack st ore s ells a variety of longer coiled handset cords, which are especially useful when you mount the phone on the wall.
11 SETTING THE DIAL ING MOD E Set TONE/PULSE (located on the back of the telep hone) for the t ype of s ervice you ha ve. If you are no t sure which t ype you have, do this simple test. 1. Be sure TO NE/PULSE is set to TON E . 2. Li ft t he handset and listen for a di al tone.
12 STORING Y OU R AREA CODE To quickly dial a num ber from a Caller ID record (see “Dial ing from a Caller ID Record ” on Page 16), you must s t ore your local area code i n the Syste m 999’s mem ory. Then, when you dial fro m a Cal ler ID re cord, the syst em skips the area code if it matches the one you stored.
13 OPERATION To ma k e a call, pick up the hand set. When you hear the dial tone, dial t he number. The display shows the num ber you are dialing. To answer a c all, lift the handset an d begin t alking. To e nd a cal l, return th e handset to th e base.
14 Di al in g a St ore d Numb er To dial a number stored in an emergen- cy memory location, press either eme r - gency memory key. To dial a number stored in the indirect memory location, press MEM and then the desi r ed m emory nu m ber (0–9).
15 USING T O NE SERV ICES ON A PULSE LINE Som e spec ial services, such as bank by phone, require tone signals. If you have pulse s ervice, you can still use th ese special tone services by following thes e steps. 1. Be sure T ONE/PULSE is se t to PULSE.
16 CALLER ID OPERATION If you subscribe to Cal ler ID service, the phone compan y sends informat ion about the c all, as well as t he time and date, between the first and second rings of every call yo u recei ve . The System 999 displays this informa- tion when it receives a cal l, and it stores up to 50 Caller ID r eco r ds for later re- view.

18 STORING VIP CALLS If you receive a call f rom an im port a nt caller (someone you call frequently, for exam- ple), the System 999 let s you s tor e that caller’s c all record a s a VIP call. The Syst em 999 lets you k now you ha v e a V I P cal l by sounding a n al ert tone.
19 T ROUBLE SHOOTING We do not expe ct you to have any prob- lems with you r telephone , b ut if you do, the following sugge stions might help. If you still ha v e problem s , disconnect the p hone. If ot her phones on the sam e line work prope r ly, the f aul t is i n this phone or its installation.
