1 Chapter 1: Intr oducti on Promise Array M anagement (PAM ) is a utility app lication designed specifically for monit oring and ma naging Promise T echnology RAID pro ducts, such a s the FastTrak SX 4000 series and S150 SX4 RAID Contro ller cards. Promise i ncludes BIOS-based R AID management uti lities with eac h of its products.
Promise Array Management 2 How They Work Together The Promise Array Management (PAM ) utility provides a nd easy w ay to set up, monitor, mod ify and repair you r RAID. PAM w o rks with the Pr omise FastTrak SX4000 seri es and S150 SX4 Controller card.

7 Chapter 2: Ins t allation To install Pro mise Array Manageme nt (PAM) is an uncom plicated procedure , once you un derstand your syst ems and how you want to use PAM . The purpose of this Chapter is to help you p lan and carry out yo ur installati on of PAM.

Chapter 2: Instal lation 9 Message Serv er The Messag e Server installs o nto the RAID PC if your in stallation does n ot involve a n etwork. If you w ant run PAM over a netw ork, install the M essage Server on on e of your networked computers includi ng a file server, a networked P C or the RAID PC.
Promise Array Management 10 Network Requirements If you plan t o install PAM on a network be sure all the hosts a nd servers are connect ed and runni ng. That is, ea ch of the PCs, RAID s and Servers must have a working n etwork connecti on before you insta ll PAM.

Chapter 3: Initial Set up 17 Remote PAM Log-in You must create a RAID Server in order to use Remot e PAM. The RAID Server in PAM comm unicates with th e Message Server on t he network to connect your PC with the oth er PCs running FastT rak. Launch Re mote PAM as descr ibed above.

From the list of networked RAI D PCs, find the on e you want to ac cess, right-cli ck on its RAID M achine icon and s elect Login fro m the pop up menu.
Chapter 3: Initial Set up 19 Logout of RAID PC Logout of the R AID Server effectiv ely logs you ou t of all RAID PCs us ing that network co nnection. You can l og out of one RAID PC while rema ining connect ed to others on th e network.

Chapter 3: Initial Set up 21 Create a New Use r The Admin istrator is created by default. You mu st create add itional user s manually. T o create a new User: 1. Right-cli ck on the U ser Management i con and select New > User from the popup me nu (below).
Promise Array Management 22 Every User has least one of th ese three Rights a nd can chan ge his/her own passw ord. The Administrator c an assign more or fewer rights to oth er Users but cannot c hange their passw ords. 3. Type in a U s ernam e and Passw ord in their respective f ields.

29 Chapter 4: P A M User Interface This chapter describes PAM ’s Graphic User Interf ace (GUI). Y ou should understan d that PAM is softw are running on top of the Promise RAID BIO S and other applic ations that ca me with your Promise R AID product.
Promise Array Management 30 Tree View Local PA M The Monitor w indow is the u s er interf ace for PAM. It has thr ee views: T ree View, Object View and Information V iew which were intr oduced in C hapter 3. The T ree View displays al l of the elements of your RAID sy stem.

Promise Array Management 32 Tree View and Component Speci fic Menus In PAM, like most Window s applications, you can a ccess the v arious command s and funct ions by opening dr opdown menu s and clicki ng on icons. E ach time you click on a component in T ree View, PAM ’s menu bar also d isplays that component’ s dropdown menu.
Chapter 4: User Interface 33 Information View Information Vi ew, like Objec t View , changes its co ntent depending on w hich item you select in Tree View. T he difference is that you use Infor m ation Vi ew to obtain data, i nput settings and information.
Promise Array Management 34 Pulldown Menus As indicated above, the left- most item of t he Pulldown M enus changes according to which compone nt is select ed in the Tree View . Dynamic Menus By the term D ynamic M enus, we refer to m enus appear only when a cert ain item is selecte d in Tree View.

Chapter 4: User Interface 37 Preference M enu The Preference menu allows y ou to start PAM automatically when your PC boots. Che ck to enable or uncheck to disabl e this feature. If you are us ing PAM for remote mo nitoring, running PAM automatically is a good idea.
Promise Array Management 38 Toolbar The T oolbar is a series of bu ttons that are shortcuts to perf orming speci fic tasks. You w ill never see all butt ons active as in the example below. Figure 36. The Toolbar. They becom e active when y ou click on specific sy stem component s in T ree View.
Chapter 4: User Interface 39 Popup Menus In addition to the command s in the dropdow n menus, there is a corresponding set of co mmands you can access via po pup menus. In a popup me nu, you can u se any of the com m ands t hat are in black. Y ou will notice that some function s are grayed out, m eaning that you cannot use them .

Promise Array Management 46 Create a RAID Serv er The Messag e Server relays da ta and command s between the M onitoring Utility on this com puter and the M essage Agent on the R AID PC. In order for your monitoring PC to communicat e with the Messag e Server, you must create a RAID Server.
Chapter 5: RAID Monitori ng and Maintenance 47 Delete a RA ID Server If the IP addres s changes for t he computer w here the Message Serv er software is in stalled, an ex isting RAID Server w i th the old a ddress will no longer work. 1. Right-click on a RAID Server icon and select Delete from the p opup menu.
Promise Array Management 48 Future Log-ins The RAID Server remains under the M yConsole ico n until deleted. It continues to work as long as the IP addr ess is corr ect. Figure 44. Right-click on a RAID Server icon and select D elete from the popu p menu.

Chapter 5: RAID Monitori ng and Maintenance 57 Con troller The Controll er deals with cre ating new Array s, reading eve nts from the memory buffer, set ting cache an d perfo rmance optio ns. Array creatio n is covered in t he Arrays secti on of this chapter.
Promise Array Management 58 Controller Options The Controll er has system in formation and settings several i m portant f eatures. Click on the Controller icon in T ree View to see the Opt ions in Informat ion View.
Chapter 5: RAID Monitori ng and Maintenance 59 Controller Cache Allows you to t oggle betw een two write mode s for the FastT rak's cache: Write Through – Dat a is written to the cache and hard drive at the sa me time. This arrangement is saf er.
Promise Array Management 60 PCI Bus Utilization On High setting, FastT rak holds onto t he PCI bus longer for data transfers to occur. On Low setting, Fa stTrak release s the PCI bus sooner for other PCI device s to use. Normally , no adjustment is required.

E x pansi on means ad ding disk drives t o an existing array. Conversion means chan ging an ex isting array from o ne RAID level to an other.

Promise Array Management 70 Conversion Converting changes its RA ID Level, and i n some case s increases th e array capacity, w ithout affect ing dat a availabil ity. Depending o n the source and target RAID levels, you can add o ne or more free di sk drives while performing the Convert functi on.

Promise Array Management 74 A r ray Critical When a disk drive fails on a fault-tolerant array (R AID 1, 0+1 and 5) for any reason, the Array goes Critical.
Chapter 5: RAID Monitori ng and Maintenance 75 In the ex ample above, there are three disk drives attached to the FastTrak controlle r and all three ar e assigned to a RA ID 5 array. The three dis k drives appear under the Controll er but only two app ear under the Array.
Promise Array Management 76 Rebuild an A rra y To Rebuild to restore redunda ncy to a RAID 1, 0 +1 or 5 after one o f its drives has failed. U nlike Synchroniz ation, a Rebuild is a repair oper ation. When a drive f ails for any reas on, the Array goes Critical.
Chapter 5: RAID Monitori ng and Maintenance 77 Manual Rebuild After you repla ce a failed disk drive, the replac ement dr ive must be rebuil t in order to restore the Array. To initiate a n array Rebuild m anually: 1. In Tree View , select the Array icon of the array y ou want to rebuild.

Promise Array Management 80 Error Handling This feat ure deals with a b ad sector on a di sk drive that the F astTrak Control ler encounter s during a Rebui ld. The options a re: Fix if possib le – The C ontroller attempts to repair the disk e rror.
Chapter 5: RAID Monitori ng and Maintenance 81 A r ray Offline When a disk drive fails on a non-fault-tolerant array (RAID 0) for any rea son, the Array goes Off line. The array cannot read or w rite data. All of the data on the array w ill be lost unless th e failed drive is rest ored to operatio n.

83 Appendix A: R AID Concept s RAID is a n acronym that sta nds for Redundant Arr ay of Independe nt Disks. It is divided int o different numb ered Levels. T he numbers of th ese Levels do not mean that one Level is higher or bett er than another. Ea ch Level has its ow n advantages and shor tcomings.
Promise Array Management 84 Stripi ng (RAID 0) Reads and w rites sectors o f data interleav ed between multi ple drive s. When any disk memb er fails, it affects the entire array . Performance is better than a s ingle drive since the workload is balanced betw een the array members.
Appendix A: RAID Concepts 85 Mirror ing (RAID 1) Writes dupli cate data on to a pair of drives w hile reads are p erforme d in parallel. RAID 1 is fault tolerant becau se each driv e of a mirrored pair is install ed on separate controller channel s.
Promise Array Management 86 Striping / Mirr oring (RAID 0+1) A combinatio n of RAID 0 and RAID 1 arrays. It can i ncrease performan ce by reading and w riting data in parallel while pr otecting data w ith duplication . A minimum of four drives are r equired.
Appendix A: RAID Concepts 87 A b out Dual Data Redundanc y One unique (t hough rarely occ urring) feature of RA ID 0+1 is dual faul t tolerance. In some ca ses, two driv es can fail simul taneously and still mainta in the integrity of data. T here are six combi nations in w hich two drives can fail.
Promise Array Management 88 Block and Parity Striping (RAID 5) RAID 5 calcu lates parity in order to achi eve redundancy rat her than wr iting a second copy of the data, l ike RAID 1. Parity i s distribut ed across the physical drives alon g with the data blo cks.
Appendix A: RAID Concepts 89 JBOD - Single Drive An alternat ive to RAID, Just a Bunch of D isks (JBO D) capacity is equal to the sum of all dr ives in the gr oup, even if the dr ives are of different sizes. JBOD appears i n the User Interfac e as one or mor e individual dr ives.

95 Appendix C: Netw orking Issues IP Address In order for PAM to be configured ov er a network, you must know the IP (network) addr ess of every co mponent. The M essage Server use s IP address es to communi cate with the M essage Agent on th e RAID PCs a nd the Monitoring Utility on the network PCs.
