Setting Up for Surround Sound 38 En T o ensure the best possible surround sound, complete the following setup operatio ns. Some of these are the same (and take precedence over) the settings you made in the Easy Setup Guide, so consider if the ones you made at that time were adequate.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 39 En SURROUND SETUP Surround Back System This setup selects how your surround back system will be us ed. If you want to use it fo r surround back speakers in your main speaker system choose NORMAL SYSTEM.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 40 En NORMAL Setup This is the manual method to setup yo ur sound parameters for surround sound. Y ou don’t need to do this, however , if you did the AUTO SURROUND SETUP method on page 13.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 41 En SURROUND SETUP Speaker Setting The information below shows yo u how to select the cor rect settings for the type and number of speakers you connected. Most importantly , you need to decide how to rou te the sound for all the speakers you connected.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 42 En 1 SPEAKER SETTING should be selected. If it isn’t use the buttons to select it. Press the ENTER button. The setup possibilities appear on your TV . 2 With the buttons choose the speakers that you w ant to set.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 43 En SURROUND SETUP Channel Level The following steps show you how to ba lance the sound o utp ut level of your speakers. Proper speaker balance is essential for obtaining high quality surr ound sound. If cont inuing from SPEAKER SET TING go to step 1.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 44 En Speaker Distance Adding a slight delay to some speakers is nece ssar y to achieve proper sound depth, separation as well as an effective surround sound effect. Y ou need to figu re out the di stance from your listening position to your speakers to add the proper delay .

Basic Operation 50 En Adjusting the Effect of a Listening Mode The DSP (Digital Signal P rocessing) listening modes have so und processing added to acce ntuate a certain kind of atmosphere or effect (see the preceding pages for explanatio n). Y ou c an choose if you want to strengthen or weaken this effect in the given mode.

It can be used with any surround sound so urce and play soundtracks so that the quieter sounds are audible ev en while playing a soundtrack at low volu me s.
Basic Oper ation 53 En BASIC Adjusting Bass and Treble Y ou can adjust the low (bass) and high (treble) frequencie s. T he TONE button can also be used to bypass the tone circuit r y . 1 Press RECEIVER. 2 Press the TONE button on the remote control or the fron t panel to put the receiver in tone adjust mode.
Basic Operation 54 En Listening in Audio Scaler mode Use to hear CD and DVD, a s well as other digital soundt racks, at a wider dynamic range, allowing f or finer audio reproduction. 1 Press RECEIVER. 2 Press the HI-BIT button on the remote control or HI-BIT/HI-SAMPLING button on the front panel.

Basic Operation 56 En Dual Mono setting and playback The dual mono setting can only be used when listening to Dolby Di gital or homemade discs that have dual mono software enc oded in them. Dual mono software u sually is used to p ut two different mono soundtra cks, that you can listen to together or separate ly , o n one DVD.
Basic Oper ation 57 En BASIC Video Select This function allows you to listen to one sound source while you watch a different video so urce on your TV . The sound source is set in the normal fash ion as explained on page 45. Y ou then change the video input with the VIDEO SEL button .
Using the Tuner 58 En Automatic and Manual Tuning The following steps show you how to tune in FM and AM rad io broadcasts using the au tomatic (search) and manual (step) tuning functions. If you a lready know the exact fr equency of th e station you want , see “Direct Acce ss T uning“ on the follo wing page.
Using the Tuner 59 En BASIC Channel Step Setting (multi-voltage model only) The unit has been factor y preset to th e channel allocation value for the a rea in which it is to be sold .
Using the Tuner 60 En Memorizing Frequently Used Stations The following steps show you how to mem orize up to 30 radi o stations in 3 classes (each holding 10 stations). When memorizing FM frequencies, the receiver also memorizes the MPX mode (STEREO or MONO) and the RF A T T mode (European model only).
Using the Tuner 61 En BASIC Naming Memorized Stations Y ou can inpu t a name of up to fo ur characters for ea ch pr eset station in the receiver ’s memor y (see the previous page).
Using the Tuner 62 En Recalling Memorized Stations 1 Press the TUNER button. This selects the TUNER function on the receiver and sets the remote to the TUNER operation mode. 2 Press the CLASS button repeatedly to select a class number. Each press switches the display : 3 Use the number butt ons to select th e channel you want.
Using the Tuner 63 En BASIC An introduction to RDS (European model only) Radio Data System, or RDS as it’s usually known, is a system used by FM radio stations to provide listene rs with var- ious kinds of inform ation—the name of the station and th e kind of show they ’re broa dcasting, for example.
Using the Tuner 64 En Searching for RDS programs (European model only) One of the most useful features of RDS i s the ability to search for a particular kind o f radio program. Y o u can search for any of the program types (listed on page 63). 1 Tune into an FM station.
Using the Tuner 65 En BASIC Memo: • The EON mode is canceled if you switch to AM reception while setting EON. It starts once again when you return to FM recep- tion . • Y ou can’t search for traf fic announce- ments and news at the same time. • Y ou can’t operate the TUNER EDIT and CHARACTER/SEARCH butto ns while the EON indicator is lit.
Using the Tuner 66 En Clearing all stations from the RDS or EON search (European model only) The receiver will automaticall y register an identif ying marker (called a PI code) for any station you input into the memor y classe s which can receive RDS or EON data.
Remote Control of Other Components 67 En BASIC Setting Up the Remote Control to Control Other Components In addition to controlling the receiv er , the supplied remote control can op erate your other com ponents (VCR , TV , DVD, CD, etc.) af ter you progr am it to do so.
Remote Control of Other Components 68 En 6 Point the remote control at the component you want set and press ENTER. OK? will appear in the remote contro l display . If the component you are tr ying to contro l turns on/off you have set it correctly . Use the buttons to select YES and go on to step 7.
Remote Control of Other Components 69 En BASIC Programming Signals from Other Rem ote Controls (LEARNING Mode) If preset codes are not available for your component(s), or the available pr eset codes do not operate correctly , you can use this procedure to program in signals from the re mote control(s) of your other component(s).

Pr ess the button on the other remote control corresponding to the operation you want to program. Using Other Functions 74 En Recording from Audio/Video Components The followin g explanations show you how make a r ecord ing from one c omponent to another connected to this receiver . Note that an an alog recorder (such as a VCR) ca nnot record from a source that is connected using only a digital connection .
Using Other Functions 75 En EXPERT Caution! Most speakers with both HI and LOW terminals have two metal plates that connect t he HI to the LOW te rminals. These must be removed when you are bi-amping the speakers or you could severely damage the amplifier .
Using Other Functions 76 En SPEAKERS Button If you selected NORMAL SYSTEM in the SURRBACK SYSTEM setup (see page 39) your surround back speakers will be used as part of your A speakers (main speaker syste m) and this button will simply switch it off or on.
Using Other Functions 77 En EXPERT Setting up and Using the USB Audio Connection The USB Audio Connection feature allows you hook up a PC to this rece iver . In this way you can hear soundtracks from your computer . T o use this feature follow th e steps below .
Using Other Functions 78 En Connecting Additional Amplifiers This receiver has mo re than sufficient power for any home use, but it is possible to add ad ditional amplif iers to ever y channel of your system. Make the connections shown belo w to add am plifiers to power your speak ers.
Using Other Functions 79 En EXPERT The PIONEER SR System: Operating other PIONEER components Connecting an optional contro l cord allows you to oper ate other PION EER components simply by pointin g the receiver's remote control at the remo te sensor on the fron t pane l of the receiver .
Using Other Functions 80 En Multi Operations Multi operati ons allow you to tel l the re ceiver a nd your other components to do a number of things with the push of only two buttons on the remote control. For example, you ca n progra m the unit to turn on your TV , turn on your DVD player and start playing the loaded DVD .
Using Other Functions 81 En EXPERT 9 When done select EXIT and press ENTER. Y ou will return to the REMOTE S ETUP menu. Start again from step 2 if you want to set do another MUL TI CONTROL button . 10 Select EXIT and pr ess ENTER again. Y ou will exit the REMOTE SETUP menu and return to normal operation.
Using Other Functions 82 En System Off The SYSTEM OFF feature allows you to tell the receiver an d your other components to stop and/or turn off with the push of only one butto n on the remote control. The st e ps below show you how to pr ogram a string of up to 5 different SYSTEM OFF operations.
Using Other Functions 83 En EXPERT Editing Remote Control Display Names Use this capability to rename the display o n the remote control for differen t MUL TI CONTROL buttons (DVD/LD, etc.). F or example, you cou ld change TV to DVD2 . In this way you can perso nalize your system.
Using Other Functions 84 En Editing Button Names (KEY LABEL) Use the KEY L ABEL c apability to rename the disp lay on the rem ote control f or different bu ttons (ke ys). Y ou w ould want to do this if you ta ught a specific button a new operation. 1 Press the REMOTE SETUP for more than three seconds.
Using Other Functions 85 En EXPERT Adjusting the Light on the Remote Control This feature allows you to adjust th e brightness of the light on the remote co ntrol. 1 Press the REMOTE SETUP button for three seconds. The REMOTE SE TUP menu appear s on the remote display .
Using Other Functions 86 En Clearing Remote Control Settings You Have Input This feature allows you to clear a particular setting, or all of the s ettings from a function in the REMOTE SETUP menu. 1 Press the REMOTE SETUP button for three seconds. The REMOTE SETUP menu appears on the remote display .
Using Other Functions 87 En EXPERT Resetting the Main Unit The following operations allow you to reset the unit to the default settings. Put the receiver in the STANDB Y mode. 1 While holding down the TONE button press the STANDBY/ON button for about three seconds.
Fine Tuning Your System 88 En THX CINEMA Setup This setup let s you choose which dec oding method for 2 channel sou rces the receiver will u se for THX CINEMA. For more informatio n on the decodi ng (playback) formats see "T ec hno Tidbits" starting on page 106.
Fine Tuning Your System 89 En EXPERT Assigning the Digital Inputs If you did n ot hook up your digita l equipm ent in acc ordan ce with the default setti ngs for the digital inputs (see pages 17, 19 and 22) you need to complete the procedure below .
Fine Tuning Your System 90 En Assigning the Component Video Inputs This receiver has two component video inputs. Their defaul t settings are video inputs for the DVD/LD (COMPONENT VIDEO IN 1) and TV/S.
Fine Tuning Your System 91 En EXPERT Assigning i.LINK Inputs With this function you can assign i.LINK-equip ped components to a function, for example DVD/LD. By assigning i.LINK inputs you will be able to select both audio an d video signals fr om i.LINK-equ ipped compo nents by turning the MUL TI JOG.
Fine Tuning Your System 92 En 7 Use the buttons to select the source you want. Press the ENTER button. When you assign an i.LI NK-equipped video component, select the input source to which you have con nected the video signal from the compo nent.
Fine Tuning Your System 93 En EXPERT Function Rename Use the FUNCTION RENAME capability to rename the display on the receiver and your O SD for different functio ns (DVD, etc.). F or example, you could rename VCR1/DVR a s DVR-7000. F or this particular setu p using the controls on the front panel is more convenient than using the remote control.
Fine Tuning Your System 94 En SACD Setup The SACD setup allows you to enjoy 1- bit (Direct Stream Digital) hi gh quality soun d directly fro m an SACD component bypassing the DSP circu itr y . 1 Turn on the receiver and your TV, press RECEIVER on the remote con- trol.
Fine Tuning Your System 95 En EXPERT PHONO/LINE Setup The PHONO/LINE setup allows you to decide whether you'll hook up a tu rntable or a line leve l component (most components, like CD players and DVD players, a re line level). 1 Turn on the receiver and your TV, press RECEIVER on the remote con- trol.
Expert System Settings 96 En EXPERT Setup The settings here can only be done if you've performed the more basic prelimina r y setups. Thus, before doing these settings do either AUTO SET TING on page 13 or NORMA L se tup page 4 0. These settings are to furthe r heighten your surround sound.
Expert System Settings 97 En EXPERT Crossover Network Crossover frequency is the point where the receiver divides th e high and low sounds (the frequencies) between the speakers. Certain bass sounds will pl ay ba ck from the subwoofer if you sele cted it as YES (or PLUS) or from the front speakers if you selected them as L ARGE.
Expert System Settings 98 En Fine Channel Level The following steps show you ho w to balance the sound outp ut level of you r speakers more finely than in the NORMAL setup (see page 40). P roper speaker balance is e ss ential for obt aining high quality surround sound and the better the speaker balance the better surro und sound you can get.
Expert System Settings 99 En EXPERT Fine Channel Delay The following steps show you ho w to adjust the delay level of your speakers more finely than in the NORMAL setup (see page 40). Adding a slight delay to some speakers is necessar y to achie ve pro per sound depth, separation as well as an effective surround sound effect.
Expert System Settings 100 En Acoustic Calibration EQ This receiver lets you choose between two types of ACOUSTIC CAL EQ equalizer cur ves: ALL CH ADJUST and FRONT ALIGN, with the former equalizing the speakers individua lly an d the latter equalizing the speakers in accordance with the front spea kers.
Expert System Settings 101 En EXPERT To start the p rocess use DA TA COPY to pas te the ALL CH ADJUST or FRONT ALIGN settin gs into CUSTOM 1 or CUS- TOM 2. Follow steps 1-5 on page 96, if necessary, to get to the starting point mentio ned here. 1 ACOUSTIC CAL EQ should be selected, if it isn’t use the buttons to select and press ENTER.
