9 Chapter 2 Hardware Setup Inst allation Single S t age Inst allation In a Single Stage installa tion, there are no additional KH98's cascaded down from the first unit. To set up a single stage installati on refer to th e diagram below (the numbers in the diagram corresp ond with the numbers of the instruction steps), and do the following: 1.

T wo St age Inst allation To control and monito r more computers, up to eight addi tional KH98 units can be cascaded from the KVM ports of th e First Stage unit. The cascaded KH98 units that connect back to the First Stage unit are consid ered Second Stage units.
Chapter 2. Hardware Setup 11 4. Use KVM cable sets (described in the Cables section, page 3), to connect any available KVM port on the Seco nd Stage unit to the Keyboard, V ideo, and Mouse ports of the co mputers you ar e installing.
KH98 User Manual 12 Three St age Installation The procedures for setting up a three stage installation are essentially the same as for a two stage instal lation. With a three stag e setup, as many as 512 computers can be controlled in a comp lete installation.
Chapter 2. Hardware Setup 13 Note: The Power On sequence re quires that all First St age units be powered on first. After they are all on, the Second Stage units must be powered on next. After all the Second Stage units are on, the Third Stage unit must be powered on.
KH98 User Manual 14 Setup Considerations Hot Plugging The KH98 supports h ot plugging. Compo nents can be removed and ad ded back into the installation by unp lug ging and replugging th eir cables from their respective ports wit hout the need to shut the switch down.

KH98 User Manual 16 Port ID Numbering Each KVM Port on a KH98 installation is assigned a uni que Port ID . You can directly access any computer on any level of the inst allation by specifying the Port ID of the KVM port th at the computer is connect ed to - either with the Hotkey port selection meth od, or wit h the OSD.
Chapter 2. Hardware Setup 17 Port Selection The KH98 provides three methods to obta in instant access to any computer on your installation: Manual, OSD, and Hotkey. Manual: Simply press the appropriate Port Selection Sw itch on the unit's fro nt panel.

19 Chapter 3 OSD Operation OSD Overview The On Screen Display (OSD ) provides a visual, menu -driven, mouse enabled, interface that offers quick and convenient computer access and control, as well as efficient system admini stration including us er management (access rights, passwords, etc.

Chapter 3. OSD Operation 21 OSD Main Screen Headings OSD Navigation T o dismiss the menu, and d eactivate the OSD, Click the X at the upper right corner of the OSD W indow; or press [Esc] . T o Logout, Click F8 or the Z Z Z symbol at the top of the Main Screen, or press [F8] .
KH98 User Manual 22 OSD Functions OSD functions are used to configure and control the OSD. For example, rapidly switching to any port; scanning only selected port s; limiting the list of ports you wish to view; designating a port as a Quick View Port; managing port names; or making OSD setting adjust ments.
Chapter 3. OSD Operation 23 F2 LIST : This function le ts you broaden or narr ow the scope of which port s the OSD displays (lists) on the Main Screen. Many of the OSD fun ctions only op erate on the computers currently selected for Listing on the Main Screen with this function.

In order to upgrade the KH98's firmware (see Cha pter 5), you must first invoke Firmware Upgrade Mode with this setting .
KH98 User Manual 30 (Continued from previous page.) Setting Function SET KVM IP & MAC Allows you to configure and view the KH98 network information. This is necessary to establish a network connection with the IPMI enabled servers in your installation.
Chapter 3. OSD Operation 31 F5 BMC: Clicking the F5 field or pressing [F5] establishes a session with IPMI enabled servers in your KH98 installat ion . Us e this fu ncti on if you would like to monitor the h ealth of servers in your IPMI Management LAN.
KH98 User Manual 32 Note: Whil st in F5 BMC mode, click the F1 1 field or press [F1 1] to switch to the selected port on the OSD screen. SYSTEM POWER RESET Allows you to reboot the server . This option does not appear on the OSD screen when the IPMI server is powered off.
Chapter 3. OSD Operation 33 F6 PET : Clicking the F6 field, or pressing [F6] , displays the Platform Event Trap alerts received from any IPMI enabled serv er in your KH98 installation. PET alerts are triggered whenever an a monitored event o ccurs on an IPMI enabled server’s platform.
KH98 User Manual 34 F7 SCAN: Clicking the F7 field or pressing [F7] invokes Auto Scan Mode. This function allows you to automatically switch am ong the available computers at regular intervals so that you can monito r thei r activity without having to tak e the trouble of switching manu ally.
Chapter 3. OSD Operation 35 F8 LOUT : Clicking the F8 field, or pressing [F8 ] logs you out of OSD control of the computers, and blanks the Console screen. This is different from simp ly pressing [Esc] when you are at the Main Scr een to deactivate the OSD.

37 Chapter 4 Hotkey Operation Hotkey Port Control Hotkey Port Control allows you to provide KVM focus to a particular comp uter directly from the keyboard. The KH98 pro vides the follo wing Hotkey Port Control features: Selecting the Active Port Auto Scanning Invoking Hotkey Mode All Hotkey operations begin by in voki ng Hotkey Mode .
KH98 User Manual 38 Selecting the Active Port Each Computer Port is assigned a Port ID (see Port ID Numbering , p. 16). You can directly access any com puter on the installation wi th a Hotkey combination that specifies the Port ID of the Computer Port that the computer is connected to.
Chapter 4. Hotkey Operation 39 Auto Scanning Auto Scan automatically switches among all the active Comput er Ports that are accessible to the currently logged on User at regular intervals, so that he can monitor their activity automatically. (See Scan Mode of th e OSD F3 SET function, p.

43 Chapter 5 The Firmware Upgrade Utility Introduction The purpose of the Windows-based Firm ware Upgrade Utility (FWUpgrade.exe) is to provide an au tomated process for make upgradi ng the KVM switch's firmware as smooth and painless as possible.
KH98 User Manual 44 Before Y ou Begin To prepare for the firmware upgrade, do the following: 1. From a computer that is not part of your KVM installation go to our Internet support site and choose the model nam e that relates to your device to get a list of available Firmware Upgrade Packages.
Chapter 5. The Firmware Upgrade Utility 45 Performing the Upgrade St arting the Upgrade To upgrade your firmware: 1. Run the downloaded Firmw are Upgrade Package file - either by double clicking the file ico n, or by openi ng a command line and keying in the full path to it.

All the devices capable of being upgraded by the package are listed in the Device List panel. 4. As you select a device in the li st, its description ap pears in the Device Description panel.
