8 Getting started Befor e y ou begin About caller identification Caller ID with call waiting featur es in this telephone let you see who’ s call- ing befor e you ans w er the phone, even when you’ re on another call. These featur es requir e services provided b y your local telephone compan y .
9 Getting started NOTES: 1. Use only the power cord supplied with this product. If you need a replacement, call 1 (800) 222-3111 . In Canada, call 1 (866) 288-4268 . 2. Be sure to use an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. T elephone base installation Install the telephone base as shown below .
10 Getting started Batter y installation & charging After batter y installation, place each handset in the telephone base or a charger and allow to charge for 16 hours befor e use. Y ou can keep the battery packs charged by returning the handsets to the telephone base or chargers after each use.
11 Getting started W all mounting The base can be installed on any standar d wall-phone outlet as shown belo w . Choose a location a wa y from electr onic equipment, such as personal computers, computer r out- ers, television sets or micr owa ve ov ens.
12 Getting started Belt clip & optional headset Install belt clip as shown below if desir ed. For hands-fr ee telephone conv ersations, y ou can use an y industr y standard 2.5 mm headset (pur chased separately). For best r esults, use an A T&T 2.
13 T elephone operation Basic operation Making and answ ering calls T o answ er an incoming call, pr ess PHONE/ FLASH or SPEAKER, or any dial pad k ey (0-9, * or #). T o make a call, press PHONE/ FLASH or SPEAKER , then dial a number . Pr ess OFF/ CLEAR to hang up .
14 T elephone operation Basic operation Handset locator If you misplace the handset(s), pr ess HANDSET LOCA TOR at the base. This starts the paging tone at the handset(s) for 60 seconds to help y ou locate it.
15 T elephone operation Options while on calls V olume contr ol Press or on the VOLUME button on the side of the handset to adjust listening volume. Each button press raises or lo wers v olume b y one lev el. When you change the v olume le vel, the new setting is sa v ed.
16 T elephone operation Options while on calls Mute Press MUTE/ DELETE to silence the micr ophone . Y ou will be able to hear the person at the other end, but they will not be able to hear you until y ou pr ess MUTE/ DELETE again and resume speaking.
17 T elephone operation Inter com calls Intercom calls If you ha ve mor e than one handset, you can use the intercom f eatur e to ha v e conv ersations betw een the handsets. • Press the INTERCOM button on a handset. • Y ou will see INTERCOM T O: • Enter the handset number of the handset you want to call.
18 T elephone operation Call forwar d Call forward If you ha ve mor e than one handset, during a conv ersa- tion, you can f orward an external call fr om one handset to another handset. • Press and hold INTERCOM . Y ou will see FOR W ARD TO : • Enter the handset number (1, 2, 3, or 4) to which you want to forward the call.
19 T elephone operation Call transfer Call transfer If you ha ve mor e than one handset, during a conv ersa- tion you can transf er a call to another handset. • Press INTERCOM (the external call is put on hold). Y ou will see TRANSFER T O : • Enter the handset number (1, 2, 3, or 4) to which you want to transf er the call.
20 T elephone operation Handset settings Using the featur e menu y ou can change settings to customize how the telephone w orks. Press MENU , then use the buttons to scroll to the featur e you want to change. As you scr oll through the menu, the top menu item is al wa ys highlighted with a > symbol.
21 T elephone operation Handset settings Languag e At this menu, y ou can select the language used in all menus and scr een displa ys. Use the buttons to select ENGLISH, ESP ANOL or FRANC AIS, then press SELECT to sa v e your pr efer ence.
22 Directory Shared dir ectory The directory is stored in the base, and is shared by all handsets. Changes made at any one handset will be reflected in all. NOTE: Only one handset can review the directory at a time. If another handset attempts to enter the directory, it will display NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

27 Caller ID log Shared caller ID lo g The caller ID log is stored in the base, and is shared b y all handsets. Changes made at any one handset will be reflected in all.
28 Caller ID log About names Names of callers will be displa y ed only if the inf orma- tion is pro vided by y our local telephone compan y . If the telephone number of the person calling matches an exact number in y our directory , the name that appears on scr een will match the name as you enter ed it into your dir ectory .

Use the arr ow buttons to scr oll through the list as sho wn at left. T o return a call Press PHONE/ FLASH (or SPEAKER ) to call the num- ber as displa y ed.
30 Answering system operation Messag e capacity The answ ering system can recor d up to 99 messages, depending on the length of each message. Individual messages can be up to four minutes long, and total maximum r ecording time is 15 min utes. Messages will remain a vailable for repla y until you delete them.
31 Answering system operation T urning the answering system on and off Da y and time announcements T o set da y and time Befor e pla ying each message, the answ ering system announces the da y and time the message was r eceiv ed.
32 Answering system operation Outgoing announcements Outgoing announcements ar e the messages callers hear when calls are ans wer ed b y the answ ering system. The phone is pre-pr ogrammed with announcements for normal (answ er and recor d) mode and for announce- ment only mode (see page 33).
33 Answering system operation Announcement only mode In announcement only mode, callers hear an announce- ment but cannot lea v e messages. T o turn announcement only on or off Press SETUP r epeatedly until y ou hear “Announcement only , recor d no messages.

35 Answering system operation Messag e pla yback Press PLA Y/STOP to hear messages. The system announces the number of messages, then begins pla y- back. If you ha ve new messages, you will hear only the new messages (earliest first). If there ar e no ne w messages, the system will pla y back all messages (earliest first).
36 Answering system operation 36 Recording and pla ying memos Memos are messages y ou r ecord y ourself. They ar e sa v ed, pla y ed back and deleted exactly lik e incoming mes- sages. Y ou can recor d a memo as a reminder to y ourself, or lea v e a message for someone else if others in y our household use the answ ering system.

38 Answering system operation 38 1. Remote access A two-digit security code is r equir ed to access y our answ ering system fr om any touch-tone phone. This code is 19 by default; see page 34 to change it. Dial your telephone number from any touch-tone phone.

43 Appendix Adding ne w handsets Y our telephone can accommodate up to four cordless handsets. Y ou can add new handsets (E597-1, sold separately) to the E5926, E5927B, E5937B and E1937B at an y time, but each handset must be register ed with the base befor e use.
44 Appendix If you ar e r eplacing a handset on a system that has the maximum n umber of register ed handsets (four) or wish to change the assigned handset number of y our r egister ed handsets, you m ust first de-register the handsets, then de-registration all handsets.

46 Appendix CONNECTING... displays on my cordless handset • Ensure that the base is powered up. • Place the cordless handset in the base for one minute to allow the cordless handset and base to r esynchronize channels. • Move the cordless handset closer to the base.
47 Appendix T r oubleshooting I get noise, static, or weak signal even when I’m near the base • Other cordless phones and 802.11 wir eless routers that ar e used for home computer networks both use internal radios to communicate. The radios may interfere with one another .
48 Appendix T r oubleshooting My cordless handset does not ring when I receive a call • Make sure that the ringer is not turned off. Refer to the section(s) on ringer selection in this user’ s manual. • Make sure the telephone line cor d is plugged securely into the tele- phone base and the telephone jack.
49 Appendix T r oubleshooting • Relocate your telephone base to a higher location. The phone will have better reception when not installed in a low ar ea. • If the other phones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in your wiring or local service.
50 Appendix Incomplete messages • If a caller leaves a very long message, part of it may be lost when the system disconnects the call after four minutes. • If the caller pauses for more than seven seconds, the system stops recor ding and disconnects the call.
