About Caller Identification (Caller ID) This product has a Caller ID with Call W aiting featur e that works with ser vice from y our local phone ser vice provider . Caller ID with Call W aiting lets you see who’ s calling before y ou answ er the phone, ev en when you’ re on another call.
T able/Desk Installation • NOTE: Install this telephone aw ay from electr onic equipment, such as personal computers, television sets or micro wa ve o vens. Av oid excessiv e heat, cold, dust or moistur e. 1 Connect the telephone line cord. 2 Connect the power cord.
3 Install the handset battery. Use only A T&T Batter y 2401, SKU# 91077. 4 Charge the handset battery. • Place the handset in the base. • Charge the battery at least 12 hour s. After the fir st charg e, the batter y will charg e in eight hour s.
W all Installation 1 Connect the power cord and telephone line cord to the underside of the corded base, as shown (figure a). 2 Position the mounting bracket as shown (figure b).
Spare Batter y/Power Failure Backup Y ou can buy a spare handset batter y (A T&T Batter y 2401, SKU# 91077, sold separatel y) and keep it charged in the base at all times.
7 Belt Clip Y ou can remove the belt clip from the handset. Headset Y ou can use this telephone hands-free when you install any industry standard 2.5 mm headset (purc hased separatel y). For best r esults use an A T&T 2.5 mm headset. Plug the headset into the jack located on the left side of the handset (under the small rubber f lap).
8 Feature Setup Menu Press the softkey under to enter the Feature Setup menu. Use or to choose featur es, then select to save y our choice. • NOTE : If y ou wait mor e than 20 seconds without pr essing a k ey , the handset r eturns to the idle scr een.
9 Clock Mode Y ou can choose to display the time when the phone is idle at the handset, or you can turn this featur e off. The default setting is ON . 1 Press . 2 Press until the screen highlights 3 Press . The screen displays 4 Press or . 5 Press to sav e the displayed setting.
10 Sound Select This telephone uses the latest acoustic receiver design, providing you with f our dif f erent sound quality settings. During a call, you can adjust the quality of the sound. Pressing repeatedly will cycle y ou through four diff erent responses.
Ringer Volume Adjust the volume of the handset ringer. Setting the volume so that no bars show on the graph turns the ringer off. 1 Press , then until the screen highlights HANDSET SETTINGS . 2 Press . 3 Press when RINGER VOLUME is highlighted. 12 Ringer Melody The Ringer Melod y sets which ringer y ou hear when you hav e an outside call. 13 Vibrate Control When this featur e is on, the handset vibrates when you have an incoming call. The default setting is OFF . 1 Press , then until the screen highlights HANDSET SETTINGS . 2 Press , then until the screen highlights VIBRATE CONTROL . 3 Press .

18 Language Setting Y ou can set each registered handset so the displa y appears in English, Spanish or Frenc h. The default setting is ENGLISH . 1 Press , then until the screen highlights HANDSET SETTINGS . 2 Press , then until the screen highlights LANGUAGE .
19 Ringer Volume Setting the volume so that no bars show on the graph turns the r inger off. 1 Press . At the lowest setting, the base will not ring when a call comes in.

25 V olume Handset Y ou can adjust the volume of what you hear through the handset during a conversation b y pressing + or - on the right side of the handset. 29 Flash/Call Waiting If you subscribe to Call W aiting service with your local telephone ser vice provider , you can answ er a new incoming call without losing your current call. Handset 1 Press P / F to connect to the new call when you receiv e a call-waiting signal.
30 TELEPHONE OPERA TION TELEPHONE OPERA TION Mute Handset 1 During a telephone conversation, mute the handset microphone by pressing . The other party will be una ble to hear anything on y our end. The screen displays 2 T o return to two-wa y conversation, press again.
31 Hold Handset • NOTE: When a call is on hold, the scr een displays CALL ON HOLD . If the clock featur e is on, this message will be displa y ed for f ive seconds, then r eturn to the c lock displa y with H on top of the scr een. HANDSET ICONS THIS ICON: INDICA TES Line In Use indicator On steadily with no number ne xt to it when another phone on this line is in use. On steadily with one or mor e numbers next to it , indicating which e xtensions are using the line. For e xample, 12 indicates that Handset 1 and Handset 2 are on an outside call.
35 BASE ICONS THIS ICON: INDICA TES Ringer Off indicator is display ed when the ring er is tur ned off. Battery indicator Cycles (Low , Medium, and Full) when a batter y pack is charging in the spare battery compar tment.

37 Intercom Calls If you hav e more than one handset (A T&T 5800, purc hased separately) registered with y our 5840 base, you can make inter com calls between handsets. From Base to All Handsets 1 Press I on the base. 2 Press until GLOBAL PAGE is highlighted, then press .

Answer an Incoming Call While on an Intercom Call If an incoming call is received while y ou are using the intercom, you will hear a beep and the screen will display call inf ormation as usual for 15 seconds.
39 Blind Call T ransfer If you hav e installed additional A T&T 5800 handsets (purc hased separately) with your 5840 telephone, you can transf er a call from one handset to another . From the Handset 1 Press , then use to highlight where you w ant the call transferred.
40 Conference Calling 1 If one handset is already on a call, you can connect a second handset to the call by pressing P on the second handset — OR — If you are on a call and hav e a second call on hold, press P to add the held call to the confer ence call.

46 If you subscribe to Caller ID ser vice with your local phone service provider , this phone stores all incoming calls (up to 50 at the handset, up to 99 at the base) with valid Caller ID information in the calls log. Name, number , time and date information can all be stored, if they are sent with the call.

Connect with the Answering System Y ou can access many features of this system r emotely from a touch tone phone. 1 Dial your telephone number . 2 When the system answ er s, enter y our Remote Access Code (preset to 50). The system beeps once and then announces the number of new messages.

In the event of a power f ailure, a full y charg ed batter y in the spare batter y compartment will allow you to make and receive calls from the cordless handset only f or up to 2 1 / 2 hours.
