Thank you for p urchasing th e PENT AX Auto-flash AF540FGZ. In addition t o easy dayligh t sync photogra phy with TTL au to, the AF540FGZ al so allows wir eless TTL auto (P-TTL auto) phot ography and h igh-speed sy nc. It is a clip-on ty pe flash wh ich enables a ccurate foc us adjustmen ts even in dark locatio ns with built- in AF-assist spotbeam.

2 W ARNING The flash contains el ectronic c ircuits that operate at high vol tages . Do not at tempt to disassem ble the fl ash unit yo urself, as there is danger of an el ectric shoc k. If internal p arts of the fla sh unit becomes exposed due t o impact, etc.
3 Precautions for Y our Flash Unit ● Never use orga nic solvents such as paint thinner, alcohol or benzene to cl ean the flash unit. ● Avoid leaving the flash unit for extended period in places where the humidity and temperature are very high such as in a car.
4 ■ Cautions Rega rding Batteries ● This flash unit uses four AA al kaline, lit hium, or nick el metal hydride bat teries. Do not us e any other typ e of battery . The flash unit may not be able to op erate correctl y or demonstr ate sufficient perfo rmance, or the flash unit itself may ge nerate heat, de pending on the type of batteries used.

12 Inserting the Batteries Slide the batte ry chamber co ver as shown in the figure to open. Insert four AA batteri es, making sur e the plus/ minus markings ( + , - ) match the diagra m inside the ba ttery chamber cover .
13 T ypes of Batt eries This flash un it uses four AA batt eries of the same type, as shown below . - Alkaline batt ery (LR6) - Lithium battery (FR6) - Nickel- Metal Hydride batte ry (Ni-MH) (Nickel mangane se (Ni-Mn) and nick el cadmium (Ni- Cd) batteri es cannot be us ed.
14 Mounting to Camera Remove the hot shoe cover from the camer a. Attach the flash unit to th e camera. Turn the locking leve r of the flas h unit in the directio n opposite to that indica ted by (FIX ➝ ) (clockwise fr om the direc tion of the LCD panel).
15 T urning the Power On Sliding the power switch to the (ON) p osition will tu rn on the power . The rea dy lamp will light up when the flash is cha rged. Slidi ng it to th e (OFF) posi tion will turn off the power . If charging time takes more than 20 se conds, the batteries ha ve been exhausted and should be replaced with new batteries.
16 ■ Charging the AF540FGZ with the Optional Extern al Power Source Prepare the externa l power source TR Power Pack-3 in acco rdance with t he instructio n in the operating man ual. Confirm that th e power switch of t he flash unit and TR Power Pack -3 is turned to OFF .
17 ■ Auto Power Off Functi on When the flash unit is left unused for about 3 minutes with the power switch set to the (O N) position, it automatically switches of f to save the power . Slide the s etting switc h up. Press the L CD panel illumination b utton (LIGHT) for 2 second s or more.
18 Select Button (S)/Adju stment Dial Functions 4 types of settings are availa ble as sh own on the following page s for the se lect butt on (S) and the adjustme nt dial. ■ Procedure Press the s elect button (S ) so that the nu mber to adjust is blinking.
19 After adju stment, pres s the select butto n (S) and stop the bl inking. Adjust the o ther item s below using the sa me procedure. ● When using multiple flas h units set to P-TTL or TTL Auto and adjusting the amount of light at th e same time, use the camer a ’ s exposure compensation .
20 Camera Forma t and Flash Co verage Angle The AF540FGZ ’s flash coverage an gle can be adj usted to match the an gle of view of the lens being use d, which enab les effective dist ribution of the flash ligh t.
21 ■ Zoom position (Flash cover age angle) settin g Next, set t he zoom (fla sh coverage ang le) to match the fo cal length of th e lens you are us ing.
22 ● In the manu al zoom mode , refer to th e LCD p anel and set it so the f lash coverage angle matches the lens focal length or set a flas h coverage angle that is shorter tha n the lens f ocal length. 31 Confirm that the subjec t is within the effec tive flash ran ge and the r eady lamp is lit. Then take a picture. ● In the foll owing cameras, if the c orrect flash output is obtained, th e flash mode indicator and ( ) in the viewfinder will blink.

33 ■ Leading Curt ain Sync Mode Refer to page 32 for the fe atures and conditions of use of this sync mod e. Procedure Set the power s witch to the (ON) position. Set the sync mode switch t o leading curtai n sync () . Confirm that the subjec t is within the effec tive flash ran ge and the r eady lamp is lit.
34 ■ High-Speed Sync Mode Refer to p age 32 for th e features and condi tions of use of this sync mode . ● As can be seen in the table on page 84, as the shutter speed become s faster , th e guide number becomes smaller . Accordingly , it should be noted that the di stance for taking pictures would become shorter.
35 Check the f lash range b y looking a t the bar grap h on the LCD panel . Confirm that the subjec t is within the effec tive flash ran ge and the r eady lamp is lit. Then take a picture. ● Please read th e camera opera ting manual for camera operat ion.
36 ■ Contrast Control Sync Flash Refer to p age 32 for th e features and condi tions of use of this sync mode . ● Refer to “Connec ting the AF540FGZ with the Extension Cord” on page 59 on using the AF540FGZ det ached fr om the ca mera. Procedure T urn on the power switch.

38 Advanced Functions ■ Wireless Mode With the AF540 FGZ, you can take photog raphs with the flash uni t separ ated from the c amera wirelessl y in P-TTL mode. Combine the fl ash unit with t he built-in fl ash unit of the camera or anot her AF540FGZ attached to the camera.
39 ● Control Flash an d Main Flash The purpose of the control f lash of the wireless mode is to send information to the other flash unit before taking a picture. The main fla sh discharge s at the actual ti me a pict ure is t aken in the same manne r as traditio nally done.
40 ● The AF540FGZ ca n be used in combinati on with a built-in flash unit only when us ed with the following c ameras. *ist D, *ist, MZ- S, MZ-L /ZX-L/MZ-6, K10D (NOTE), K20D, K200D, K-x, K- 7, K-m/K2000 (NOTE) However, this requires the fir mware to be updat ed to V ersion 1.
41 Firstly , set the wireles s mode and channel of the AF540FGZ, and regist er them on the camer a. Turn the camera off and then attach th e AF540FGZ to the hot shoe of the camera.
42 (Prepar ation of Flash Unit Att ached to Camera) Firstly , se t the wireles s mode and channe l of the flash unit a ttached to the camera , and registe r them on the camer a. Attach the AF540FGZ to the hot sh oe of the camera af ter turning the camera off.
43 When you turn th e camera on and pr ess the shutter re lease butto n halfway down, the channel o f the flash unit is register ed on the camera. (Prep aration of Sep arated Flash Un it) Next, set th e channel of t he separated (wir eless) flash unit to the same chan nel as the fla sh unit attache d to the camera.
44 (Prepar ation of Flash Unit Att ached to Camera) Firstly , se t the wireles s mode and channe l of the flash unit a ttached to the camera , and registe r them on the camer a. Attach the AF540FGZ to the hot sh oe of the camera af ter turning the camera off.
45 Slide the set ting switch back up to th e (white dot). When you turn th e camera on and pr ess the shutter re lease butto n halfway down, the channel o f the flash unit is register ed on the camera.
46 (Using the AF540FGZ in Combination w ith a Built-in Flash Unit) Firstly , se t the wireles s mode and channe l of the AF540FGZ, and re gister them on th e camera. Turn the camera off and then attach th e AF540FGZ to the hot shoe of the camera. Set the power switch of the flash unit to (WIRELESS).
47 When you turn t he camera on and pres s the shutter re lease butto n halfway down, the channel is r egistered on the camera. Next, remove the flash unit from th e camera an d place it in the desired p osition. ● Press the flash mode button (MOD E) to displa y (P-TTL) if th e flash mode was set to the modes other than P- TTL.
48 (Using the AF540FGZ in Combinatio n with another AF540FGZ) Firstly , se t the wireles s mode and channe l of the AF540FGZ attached to t he camera, and regi ster the channel on the camera. Turn the camera off and then attach th e AF540FGZ to the hot shoe of the camera.
49 Slide the set ting switch back up to th e (white dot). When you turn t he camera on and pres s the shutter re lease butto n halfway down, the channel is r egistered on the camera. Next, set t he channel of t he separated (wirel ess) flash unit to the same chan nel as the f lash unit attache d to the camera.
50 ■ Slave With the AF540 FGZ, you can take photog raphs with the flash uni t separ ated from the c amera wirelessl y in auto or manual mode . Combine the fl ash unit with t he built-in fl ash unit of the camera or ano ther flash unit attached to th e camera.
51 Set the zoom po sition to sui t the subjec t and place the f lash unit at the desi red location. ● When setting up a flash unit s eparately from the camera, use t he off-camera sho e adapter F when using a tripod, or the off- camera shoe clip CL-10 when setting up in another location such as tabletop, chair , etc.
52 ■ Slave Mode Setting T o properly control th e slave fl ash, it is necessary to set the slave mode se ttings. Procedure Slide the set ting switch up. Press the LCD p anel illumin ation butt on (LIGHT) for 2 seconds or more. SL1 will be displayed.
53 ■ Slow-Speed Sync Photography When using a nor mal flash t o photograph a subject in a night or even ing setting , the backg round will ap pear very dark beca use a normal fl ash light can not suffi ciently light it .
54 ■ Bounce Flash With the AF 540FGZ, you can tilt and swivel the flash head to ai m at the ce iling or wa ll to bounc e the flas h before it re aches the subj ect. Doing so creates softer light and shado ws to make the pict ure look more natural. Bou ncing the f lash will decr ease the fl ash intensity b y the time it reaches the subjec t.
55 ● A click stop is provid ed for each bounce angle. ● Hold the bounce lock relea se button and tilt the flash head dow nward when you set the bou nce angle at -10 ° . ● When using bounce fl ash, ( ) will be dis played on the LC D p anel. ● The effective flash range will blink only when the bounce angle is set a t -10 ° .
56 ■ AF Spotbea m The AF540FGZ fea tures a built-i n red spotbeam projector to assist th e autofocu s system in d im light an d low-contra st conditi ons. When usi ng the fl ash with autofocus camera in dark conditions, the spotbeam w ill be projecte d automatica lly dependi ng on the ambient lighting cond itions.
57 ■ Wide-Ang le Pane l and Catc hlight Panel The AF540 FGZ has a built-in wi de-angle panel and catchlight panel at the top of th e flash head . Execute t he followin g if necess ary . Pull out both the wid e-angle panel and catchlig ht panel. S tore the panel you ar e not using.
58 ■ Modeling Flash/T est Flash Before t aking t he picture, firing a modeling flas h help s you to see how sha dows are cas t on the subject. Modeling Fl ash Slide the setting sw itch down ( yellow dot). Check th at the fla sh is ready , then press the modeling b utton (MOD ELING).
59 ■ Connecting the AF540FGZ with the Extension Cord When using the AF 540FGZ separately from the camera connect ed by an exte nsion cord, use the optional ex tension cord F5P/F5P L.
