12 First Steps First Steps Charging the Batter y The camera uses a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL11 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Char ge r MH-64 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. It is recommended to charge the batter y wi thin six months after it is first used ( A 135).
13 Charging the Battery First Steps The CHARGE lamp status and description of eac h status are as follows. 3 Unplug the charger. Remove the battery and unplug the charger. 14 First Steps Inser ting the Battery Insert a Rechargeable Li-i on Battery EN-EL11 (supplied) that has been fully charged, using the Battery Charger MH -64 (supplied), into your camera. 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 2 Insert the battery.
15 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. To eject the battery, turn the orange battery latch in the direction shown 1 .

22 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 F rame a Picture 1 Ready the camera. Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash and self-timer l amp. When taking pictures in “tall” orientation, turn the camera so that the built-in flash is above the lens.
23 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Digital Zoom When the optical zoom is set at the teleph oto end, i.e. at maximum magnification, holding down g triggers digital zooming. The subject is magnified up to a max. optical zoom ma gnification of 4 ×.
24 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. When people's faces (front view) are recognized: Camera will focus on t he face surrounded by a double border. Once focus has been locked the double border will glow green.

28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of 0.3-3.5 m (1-11.5 ft.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum optical zoom applied, the range is 0.6-2.2 m (2 -7.2 ft.) (when ISO sensitivity is set to Auto ).

31 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 10 cm (3.9 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 30 cm (11.8 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press the multi selector o (exposur e compensation). The exposure compensa tion guide is displayed.

81 Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting to a Computer Use the supplied USB cable to connect the camera to a comp uter, and copy (transfer) pictures to a computer with the supplied Nikon Transfer soft ware.
