Getting to Know Yo ur Wi re l ess Ro ut er 1 Getting to Know Y our Wireless Router Congratulations on your purchase of a NETGEA R® high-speed wireless router , the Ra ngeMax NEXT W ireless-N Route r Model WNR834Bv2. Before you begin installing your rout er , check the package contents (see “Unpacking Y our New Router” on page 1 ).
2 Getting to Know Your Wireless Router T o prep are your router for inst allation: 1. Carefully peel off the protective film covering both si des of your router (see Figure 1 ). 2. Set up your wireless router by inserting the tabs of the stand (supplied with your router) into the slots on th e bottom of your ro uter as shown in Figure 2 .
Getting to Kno w Your Wi re less Router 3 Hardware Features Before you install and connect yo ur router , take a moment to become familiar with the front and back panels of the router—espec ially the LEDs on the front panel. Front Panel The lights on the front panel indicate the operatin g status of the router .
4 Getting to Know Your Wireless Router Router Label The label on the back of the wi reless router shows the router’ s MAC addres s, serial number, security PIN, and factory default login information.

For best results, place your router: • Near the center of the area where your computer s and other devices will operate, prefe rably within line of sight to your wireless devices.

Installing Your Router Using the Smart Wizard 9 Inst alling Y our Router Using the Smart Wizard T o use the Smart W izard, you must be using a PC with W indows V ista, or W indows 2000 or W indows XP with Service Pack 2. The Smart W izard setup procedu re should take about 15 minutes to complete.

When prompted, enter the default User Name and Password ( ad min for the router User Name and pa s s w o rd for the router Password), both in lowe rcase letters. If you changed the User Name and Password from the defaults, then enter your new User Name and Password.
12 Installing Your Ro uter Using the Smart Wizard T o upgrade your router: 1. If the Router Upgrade screen does not display automatically , select Router Upgrade under Maintenance on the main menu.
Installing Your Router Using the Smart Wizard 13 6. Under Downloads, check the most recent Firmware V e rsion of fered against the Firmware V ersion shown on your Router Status screen. 7. If the version on the NETGEAR website is more recent, click on the version number .

T o connect the wireless router, the compu ter , and the modem: 1.
Installing Your Router Manua lly (Advanced, Mac, and Linux Users) 17 6. Locate the Ethernet cable ( D ) that is attached to your computer (see S tep 3). Securely insert that cable into a LAN po rt on the router , such as LAN port 1 ( E ), as shown in Figure 9 .

Select one of the following options: • Select Ye s to allow the Setup W izard to detect your Internet connection.

Troubleshooting 27 T roubleshooting If you have difficulties accessing th e Internet, use the Basic Setup Ch ecklist to make sure that you have connected and set up your ro uter correctly . If your basic setup is correct, then look for your problem in one of the subsequent sections.
28 Troubleshooti ng • Check the router status lights to verify corr ec t router operation . If the Power light does not turn solid green within 2 minutes after turnin g the router on, reset the router according to the instructions in “Restoring the Default User Name and Password” on page 36 .
Troubleshooting 29 b. Clear the router ’ s configuration to factory defa ults. This will set the router ’ s IP address to 192.168.1.1. This pro cedure is explained in “Restoring the Default User Name and Password” on page 36 . If the error persists, you might have a hardware problem and should cont act technical support.
30 Troubleshooti ng • Make sure your computer’ s IP address is o n the same su bnet as the rou ter . If your are using the recommended addressing scheme, your computer ’ s addr ess should be in the range of 192.

32 Troubleshooti ng If any of the steps indicate “Failed,” you can attempt to reconnect by clicking Connect. The wireless router will co ntinue to attempt to connect indefinitel y . If you cannot connec t after several minutes, you may be using an incorrect Service Name, User Name, or Password.

34 Troubleshooti ng • Check that your PC has the IP address of your router listed as the de fault gateway . If the IP configuration of your PC is assigned by DHCP , this information will no t be visible in your PC’ s Network Control Panel. V erify that the IP address of the router is listed as the TCP/IP default gateway .
Default Configuration 35 Default Configuration Default Configuration Settings Y ou can use the Restore Fact ory Settings button locat ed on t he back of your device to reset all configuration settings to their factory defaults. This is called a hard reset.
36 Default Configuration Restoring the Default User Name and Password Y ou can restore the factory default configuration se ttings that reset the ro uter ’ s User Name to admin, the Password to password, and the IP address to 192.168.1.1 . This procedure erases your current configuration and restores the factory defaults.
