Section 1 Introduction This section focuses on providing outline features and operations of the NEC Versa 2500 Series Notebook Computer, including the BIOS Setup program. (Refer to the User’s Guide for more information on operating the notebook.) The NEC Versa 2500 Series of note- books are lightweight, compact, and fully IBM compatible.

Introduction 1-7 Memory Slot Compartment The memory compartment is located just under the keyboard. Inside the compartment are two extra memory module sockets which can accommodate any standard JEDEC 8 MB or 16 MB DIMM modules.
1-8 Introduction The NEC Versa 2500 Series also comes with DOS/Windows PC card drivers for supporting various PC cards like modem cards, network cards, and other I/O and memory cards. The LED Status Bar, likewise, provides lights to indicate when the computer is accessing the in- serted PC cards.

The Rear of the Notebook The following details the rear side of the NEC Versa 2500 Series computer.
Introduction 1-11 Figure 1-11 Connecting an External Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse VGA Port The 15-pin female VGA connector allows you to connect an external VGA monitor that supports up to 1024x768 pixels resolution. When displaying on an external VGA monitor alone, the VGA port supports resolutions up to 1024x768 at 256 colors.
1-12 Introduction Printer Port The 25-pin printer port provides a parallel interface to connect a parallel printer or pocket network adapter. Many operating systems and software applications refer to this port as LPT1. You can run the BIOS Setup program to change the configuration of the parallel port to Standard or Bi-directional.

1-20 Introduction To upgrade the memory in the notebook, follow these steps. 1. Power off the computer and remove the AC adapter and battery pack. 2. Remove the hinge covers, status bar cover, and the keyboard from the top of the unit and locate the memory expansion sockets.

Hardware Functional Overview 3-3 The NEC Versa 2500 Series uses the Phoenix BIOS. The BIOS Setup program is an easy- to-use system utility configuration that sets system parameters and copies them on the Flash ROM chip with the system BIOS.
3-4 Hardware Functional Overview When external memory access is required, the physical address is calculated by the Memory Management Unit and then passed to the Bus Interface Unit (BIU). The BIU provides the interface between the external system board and the processor’s internal execution and cache units.

Primary control for the memory subsystem is provided by the UMC 8890 System Controller chipset. DRAM Memory The NEC Versa 2500 notebooks contain 16 MB of 70ns page-interleaved DRAM on the system board.

4-2 Field Service Guidelines Cleaning the Notebook’s Interior When servicing the inside of the notebook to remove dust and other foreign particles pro- ceed as follows: 1. Remove the top cover, hinge covers, status bar, and keyboard using the disas- sembly procedures discussed later.
Field Service Guidelines 4-3 Do not drop the battery packs or subject them to excessive shock and vibration. Do not expose the battery packs to direct sunlight, moisture, or chemical com- pounds. Do not disassemble the battery packs. Do not use the battery packs to power other devices.
4-4 Field Service Guidelines PARTS REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES This section contains field service-level removal/replacement procedures for the notebook.
Field Service Guidelines 4-5 Removing/Replacing the Hard Disk Drive Module The procedure for removing and replacing the hard disk drive module is as follows: 1. Turn off the computer. Close the LCD cover and turn the whole unit over. 2. You will find a clamp latch (lock knob) that secures the hard disk drive module to the system unit.
4-6 Field Service Guidelines 3. To replace the diskette drive, remove the four flat screws attaching it to the null diskette assembly , two attaching the diskette cover and remove the diskette drive cable.
Field Service Guidelines 4-7 Removing/Replacing the Keyboard The procedure for removing and replacing the keyboard is as follows: 1. Turn off the computer. Follow all disassembly procedures mentioned from the start of this section. 2. Lift the keyboard out and tilt the upper edge of the keyboard towards you, but do not lift the keyboard away.
4-8 Field Service Guidelines 3. Slowly remove the CPU, moving around each side, little by little. Avoid damaging the CPU pins by forcing the CPU out of its slot immediately. Also, do not pull out the CPU heat sink as it is part of the CPU. You must remove the CPU and the heat sink together.
Field Service Guidelines 4-9 1. Turn off the computer and remove the Battery, Hard Disk Drive, and Diskette Drive Modules. Follow all disassembly procedures mentioned from the start of this section. 2. Turn the System Unit upside down with the bottom facing up.
