Notes on Using Y our Modular Server 1-3 W A RNING Do not use the equipment in the place where corrosive gases exist. Make sure not to locate or use the modular server in the place where corrosive gases (sul fur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxid e, chlorine, ammonia, ozone, etc) exist.

General Description 2-7 ST A TUS Lamp The ST A TUS lamp stays lit in green when the m odular server is in success ful operation. When the ST A TUS lamp is lit or blinking in amber , it indicates that the system has failed.

General Description 2-9 POST POST (Power On Self -T est) is the self-diag nostic program stored in the m odular server . When you power on the modular ser ver , the system automatically runs POST t o check the mother board, m emory module, C PU module, key board, an d mouse.
2-10 General Description POST Execution Flow The following describes the p rogress of POST in the chronological orde r . IMPORT ANT : Do not make un necessary key entries or perform mouse operations while POST is in progress. 1. After a few seco nds from power -on, P OST starts c hecking the mem ory .
General Description 2-1 1 POST Error Messages When POST detects an error , it displays an er ror message on the screen. See Chap ter 7 for POST error codes. If you have switched a cons ole to check the POST er ror message, cycle t he power to m ake the keyboard availabl e.
2-12 General Description Device Identification T o iden tify the device to be maintained among more than one device, UID (Unit ID) lamp is used. The UID lamp allows you to identify the device subject to maintenance among more than one modular serve r installed in t he Module Encl osure.
Chapter 3 Setting Up Y our Modular Server This chapter describes how to set up the modul ar server appropriate for your system , on a step-by- step basis.
3-2 Setting Up Y our Modular Server SETTING HARDW ARE Conduct setting up of hardware in the following order: 1. Install the rack. (Refer to the manual that comes with the rack.) 2. Install separate ly purchased options to M odul e Enclosure. (Refer to the M odule Enclosure User's Guide.
Setting Up Y our Modular Server 3-3 MAKING BACKUP COPIES OF SYSTEM INFORMA TION Save the information after completing the system setup. The system information in cludes the current BIOS settings and any specific information for the serv er . W ithout the backup data, you will not be ab le to recover the information.

3-8 Setting Up Y our Modular Server IMPORT ANT : Keep the removed blank cover for future use. Remove the bl ank cover from the tar get slot only . 3. Put the modul ar server on the clean, rigid and flat des k. Loosen the th umbscrew to open the lock lever .
Setting Up Y our Modular Server 3-9 5. Align the frame of the modular server with the guide rail on the Module Enclosure. Insert the Modular Server into the halfway of the Modu le Enclosure (approx imately 20 cm) slowly and carefully .
3-10 Setting Up Y our Modular Server NOTES: Push the front of the Modul ar Serv er into the Module Enclosure to the end slowly and carefully until th e card edge is inserted into the connector . Make sure t hat a hook of the lo ck lever is e ngaged wit h the hole on the Module Enclosure as show n in the figure below .

Shutdown the OS, or press the P OWER/SLEEP switch on the modular se rver to turn of f the power . 2. Loosen the thum bscrew on the l ock lever to un lock the modul ar server .

Chapter 4 Configuring Y our Modular Server This chapter describes Basic Input Ou tput System (BIOS) co nfiguration. When you install the modular server for the first time or install/remove optional d evices, thoroughly read this chapter for better understanding and correct setups.

Chapter 6 Maintenance This chapter describes the daily maintenance of t he modular serve r and precauti ons when relocatin g or storing t he modular ser ver . MAKING BACKUP COPIES NEC recomm ends you make bac kup copies of y our valuable d ata stored in ha rd disk dri ves of the modular se rver on a regula r basis.
6-2 Maintenance CLEANING Clean the modula r server on a r egular basis to keep it in a good s hape. W A RNING Observe the following i nstructions to us e the equipm ent safely. Fail ure to follow these instructions may result in death or serious p ersonal injury.
Maintenance 6-3 Cleaning CD/DVD-ROM A dusty CD/DVD-ROM or dust-accum ulated tray causes the device to fail to read data correctly . Follow the procedur e below to clean the tray and CD/DVD-ROM regularly: 1. Make sure that the equ ipment is po wered (the POWER/SLEEP lamp is lit).
6-4 Maintenance SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS The System Diagnostics runs several tests on the modular server. Select [T ool menu] - [T est and diagnostics] in th e NEC EXPRESSBUILDER to diagnose the system. Test Items The following items are tested in system diagnostics.
Maintenance 6-5 6. Select [T est and diagnostics]. Select [End-User Mode] and the system di agnostics starts. The diagnostics will be completed in approximately three minutes.

Chapter 7 T roubleshooting If your modular serve r does not operate as expect ed, read this chapter before assuming a failure. NOTE: For provision against an unexp ected failure, it is recommended to install the maintenance utility , NEC ESMPRO, to your computer .
7-2 T roubleshooting SYSTEM VIEWERS Monitor the occurrence of fault by NEC ESMPRO du ring the system operation. Especially take n ote on whether a ny alert is re ported to NEC E SMPRO Manager on the management PC.
T roubleshooting 7-3 LAMPS The modular server i ncludes lamps to indicate the modular server states by a variety of colors and display pat terns on the f ront panel. See "Indications of ST A TUS lamp, their meanings and actions ag ainst the indications" in Chapter 2 for details.

POST Error Messages Powering on the m odular server automatically st arts the self-diagnostic program , POST (P ower On Self-T est). When t he POST detects any error , it di splays an error message and its m easure on the display unit.
