Page 2-2 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network This chapter pr ovides detailed information about your AsantéBridge and some pointers on dif fer ent ways y ou can con- nect it to your netw ork.
Page 2-3 About Bridging The AsantéBridge 1012 has combined the world of a tr ansparent learning br idge with the intellig ence of the AsantéHub 1012. This section gives y ou a br ief introduction to bridging and how it is implemented by your new AsantéBr idg e.
Page 2-4 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network The more hubs and users added, the more traffic occur s on the backbone, until we ev entually r each a point at which o verall net- wor k performance begins to degrade.
Page 2-5 About Bridging The transparent bridg e shown here ser ves to isolate the tw o seg- ments: Networ k traffic meant only f or devices on segment A is lim- ited to the backbone serving segment A. These packets are not passed across the bridge. T raf fic on segment B is also restricted to that segment.
Page 2-6 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network Dividing your netw ork into tw o segments reduces your ov erall backbone traffic and improv e networ k ef ficiency , but also intro- duces a certain element of r isk: the br idge becomes the sole path between the tw o segments.
Page 2-7 About Bridging Figure 2-3 Redundant bridging Internal br idge softw are will automatically designate one bridge as the “active” bridge and the other bridg e as the “standby” or blocking bridg e, preventing multiple transmissions of the same packet by both bridges.
Page 2-8 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network The 3in1 port is actually a single port with three connector s: an A UI, RJ45, and BNC. P or t connection is made using one of the fol- lowing: ❏ The.

Page 2-14 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network One of the most common reasons f or a loss of netw ork services is damage to, or f ailure of, cabling inter connections.
Page 2-15 Configuring a Redundant Link BNC: According to the priority scheme described a bove, BNC will not be the active uplink if either an A UI or 10T connection exists. Due to this ordering, if BNC is selected, it is assumed that this medium is the only type av ailable.
