PT-7728 User’s Manual Featured Functions 3-27 The STP/RSTP Concept Spanning Tree Protoc ol (STP) was desi gned t o help reduce link failure s in a netw ork and pr ovide protection f rom loops. Networks that have a com plicated architecture are prone to broadcast storms caused by unintende d loops in the network.
PT-7728 User’s Manual Featured Functions 3-28 If STP is enabled, it will detect duplicate paths and prevent, or blo ck, one of them from forwarding traffic.
PT-7728 User’s Manual Featured Functions 3-29 How STP Works When enabled, STP determ ines the most ap propriate path for traffic t hrough a net work.
PT-7728 User’s Manual Featured Functions 3-30 STP Reconfiguration Once the network topology has stabilized, e ach bridge listens for "Hello" BPDUs that are transmitted from the Root Bridge at regular interv als.
PT-7728 User’s Manual Featured Functions 3-31 y Bridge A has been selected as the Root Bridge, since it was determined to have the lowest Bridge Ide ntifier on the networ k. y Since Bridge A is the R oot Bridge , it is als o the Desig nated Bridge f or LAN segm ent 1.
