14 Starting and Turning off the Engine Starter Lock-Out Important! The engine can only be started , if the vehicle was unlocked from the outside. Before Sta rting Engage parking brake and move the selector lever to position "P" or "N".
15 Important! Due to the installed starter no n-repeat feature, the key must be turned completely to the left before atte mpting to start the engine again. Observe the oil pressure gau ge immediately a fter start ing t he en gine. In a very cold engine the oil pressure will rise slowly.

17 Aquaplaning Depending on t he depth o f the water layer on the roa d, aquaplani ng may occur, even a t lo w speeds and with ne w tires. Reduce vehicle speed , avoid track grooves in the r oad and a pply brakes cautiously in t he rain. Tire Traction The safe speed on a wet, snow co vered or icy road is always lo wer than on a dry road .
18 Winter Driving Instruct ions The most impor tan t r ule for slip pery o r icy roads is to d rive sensibly and to avoid abrupt acceleration, b raking and steering action.

22 The temperature selected with the temperature selector is r eache d as quickly as possible. The temperature selector sho uld be left at the desired temperature setti ng. With the center air outlets open and the system in heating mode, switch the outlets to non-heated/ c ooled air by pressing the bl ue button (indic ator la mp lights up).

26 Car Keys Included with your vehicle are • 2 M aster keys with i nfrared remote control • 1 Master key • 1 Valet key • 1 Flat key Infrared Re mote Control w ith Folding Master K ey The master ke y fits all locks on the car. To release the key, press b utton (1).
27 Infrared Remote Control Starter Lock-Out Important! Locking the vehicle activates t he starter lock-out. The engine can only be started , if the vehicle was unl ocked from the outside.
28 3 Receiver next to tr unk lock Locking: Aim transmitter eye (2) at a receiver (3) and press transmit button ( 1). Distance to receiver max. 20 ft (6 m). The red indicator lamp on the receiver should blink. It stops blinking after approximately 3 seconds when the vehicle is properly lo cked.

31 When you lock t he car, a ll door lock buttons sho uld m ove down. If any o ne stays up, the respective doo r is not proper ly closed. You should the n unlock the ca r, o pen and reclose this door, and lo ck the car again.

35 P o w e r S e a t s , F r o nt Warning! Do not adjust the driver's seat while driving. Adjusting the seat w hile driving could cause the driv er to lose control o f the vehicle. Never ride in a moving vehic le with the seat back reclined. Sitting in an excessively reclined po sition can be dangerous.

The lap belt should be positioned as low as possible on your hips a nd not across the abdo men. Three-point seat belt: Tighten the lap portion to a snug fit by pulling s houlder p ortion up.
45 Warning! USE SEAT B ELTS PROPERLY. • Each occupant should w ear their seat belt at all times, because seat belts help reduce the likeliho od of and potential sev erity of injuries in accidents, includi ng rollovers.
46 • According to accident statistics, children are safer w hen properly restrained in the rea r seating positions than in the fr ont seat ing positions. • Children too big for child restraint syste ms should rid e in rear seats using regular sea t belts.

The "SRS" is designed to r educe the potential of injury in certa in frontal and front-a ngled impacts which may cause injuries; howev er, no syste m available t oday can totally eliminate injuries and fata lities. The activatio n of the "SRS" temporarily relea ses a sm a ll amount of dust from the air-bags.

65 Warning! When closing the w indows, be sure that there is no danger o f anyone being harmed by the closing procedure. In case of obstruction, t he automatic reversal w ill not operate if a window is being closed by pressing the switch to its resistance point and holding it there, or when using a key or the remote control.

76 Charge Indicator La mp Should the charge indicator la mp fail to come on prio r to star ting when the ke y is in steering lo ck position 2 or should it fail to go out after startin g or during operation, this indicate s a fault which must be repaired at an authorized MERCEDES-BEN Z dealer immediately.
77 Engine Oil Consu mption Engine oil cons umption checks should only be made after the break-in per iod. During the br eak-in period, higher oil consumption may be noticed and is normal. Freque nt driving at hi gh engine speeds res ults in increa sed consumption.
78 Fuel Reserve Warning Lamps With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the fuel r eserve warning la mp comes on and goes out with the e ngine running. If the war ning lamp do es not go out after starting the engine or if it comes on while driving, it i ndicates that the fuel level is do wn to the reserve quantity of approx.
79 Low Engine Coola nt Level Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the warning lamp comes on and goes out with the engine running. If the war ning lamp do es not go out after starting t he engine, o r if it comes on while driving, then the coo lant level has dropped belo w the required level.
80 Exterior Lamp Failure In dicato r Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a dim indicator lamp co mes on, and goes out when the engine is runnin g. With the ke y in steering loc k position 2 or with the engine running, a b right illumination of this la mp indicate s an exterior lamp failure.

82 Anti lock Bra ke Syste m ( AB S) The ABS prevent s the wheels fro m locking up above a vehicle speed of approximately 2 mph (3 km/h) independent o f road surface conditions. It is necessar y, however, that the vehicle speed reaches at least 5 mph (8 km/h) before co mmencing to f unction.
83 Electronic Tractio n System (ETS) The ETS improves vehicle tra ction, especially under slipper y road conditions. It enga ges at vehicle spe eds up to approximately 24 mph (40 km/h), and applies the brakes to the sp inning drive wheel. At approximatel y 50 mph (80 km/h), the ET S switches o ff.
84 Adaptive Da mping System (ADS) Depending upon r oad surface conditions, load, driving style, ADS will automatically a djust the optimal ride firmness. The malfunction i ndicator la mp comes on with the ke y in steering loc k position 2 a nd goes out when the engine is runnin g.
85 Emission Control Certain systems of the engine serve to keep certain co mponents o f the exhaust gases within per missible li mits required by la w. These s ystems, of course, will functio n proper ly only whe n m ai ntained strictly according to factory sp ecificatio ns.
86 Winter Driving Have your car winterized at your authorized Mercede s-Benz dealer before the onset of winter. • Change the engine oil if the engine contains an oil whic h is not approved for winter operation. For viscosity (SAE class) and filling quantity, see Capacities: Fuels, Coo lants, Lubricants etc.
87 Practical Hints.
88 H o od To unlock the hoo d, pull r elease lever (1) under the driver's side of the instrument panel. At the same time handle (2) will extend out of the radiator grill (it may be neces sary to lift the hood up slightly). Caution! To avoid damage to the windshield wipers or hood , ope n the hood onl y with wipers in the parked position.
89 Checking Coolant Level To check the coo lant level, t he vehicle must be par ked on level ground. Check coolant le vel only when coolant is cold: The coo lant should reach t he rib in the filler neck.
90 Checking Engine Oil Leve l 1 Oil dipstick 2 Oil filler cap To check the e ngine oil le vel, par k vehicle on level ground, with engine at normal operational te mperature. Check engine o il level appro ximately 5 minutes after sto pping the eng ine, allowing for the o il to retur n to the oil pan.
91 Checking Automatic Transmission Fluid Level Dipstick locki ng lever 1 Break seal 2 Release 3 Engage Regular automatic tr ansmissio n fluid level checks are not re quired.
92 Turning Off Engine M anually If the engine continues to run after the key is turned to steering lock position 0, open the hood and push down the lever marked " STOP" until the engine stops running. Using an extens ion such as a pen or screwdriver should make it easier to push the "ST OP" lever down.
93 Trunk Lamp 1 Switching off 2 Switching on Switch off (1 ) trunk lamp if t he trunk is to remain open for along per iod of ti me. This prevents the ve hicle battery fro m being discharged. The lamp switche s on auto matically, when you open t he trunk agai n the next time.

96 tire bead s. For this reason, check rims for damage at regular intervals . The rim flanges must be checked for wear before a tire is mounted. Rem ove burrs, if any. Check and cor rect tire in flation pressure after ro tating the wheels. For Tire Inflation Pressure refer t o Index.
97 5. Remove the protective co ver from the jack suppor t tube ope ning by inserting a scre w dr iver in the opening and p rying it out. The tube openings are locate d directly behind the front w h eel housings and in front of the rear wheel housings.

99 Tire Inflation Press ure A table (see fuel filler flap) lists the tire inflation pressures specified for summer and winter tires as well a s for the varying ope rating conditio ns. Important! Tire pressure differs by approx. 0.1 b ar (1.5 psi) per 10°C (18°F) of air temperature change.
100 Exterior Lamps When replacing b ulbs, install only 12 volt bulbs with t he speci fied watt rating Headla m p Asse mbly 1 Cover for low beam headlamp bulb and fog lamp 2 Latch for cover (1) 3 Cover.
