16 Starting and Turning off the Engine Before Sta rting Ensure that parking brake is e ngaged and that selecto r lever is i n position " P" or "N". T urn key in steeri ng lock to position 2. T he charge indicator lamp should co me on.
17 Driving Instructions W a r n i n g ! If you feel a sudden signif icant vibration or ride disturbanc e, or you suspect that possible da mage to your vehicle has occurr ed, you sh ould turn on the haza rd flashers, caref ully slow down, a nd drive wit h caution to an area which is a safe distance fr om the roadway .
18 Caution! When driving d own long and steep grades, relieve the load o n the brakes by shifting into "4", "3" , "2" or "1" .
19 Tire Traction The safe speed on a wet, snow co vered or icy road is always lo wer than on a dry road . You sho uld pa y particular attention to the condition of the ro ad as soon as the prevailing tempera tures fall cl ose to the freezing point. Warning! If ice has for med on the road, tire traction w ill be substantially reduced.
20 Winter Driving Instruct ions The most impor tan t r ule for slip pery o r icy roads is to d rive sensibly and to avoid abrupt acceleration, b raking and steering action.

22 Automatic Cli mate Control The system is alwa ys at oper ational readiness, except when manually switched off. The automatic climate control only operates with the engine running The temperature selector sho uld be left at the desired temperature setti ng.

24 Basic Setting - Aut omatic Mode Press left and right for automatic mode. Simultaneously p ress both and for temperature sett ing of 72° F. Air volume and d istribution ar e controlled automaticall y. This setting ca n be used all year aro und. Economy The function of t his setting c orresponds to the automatic mode.
25 Air Distribution Press button repeated ly until the requested symbol is d isplayed. Air Volume Press - or + side o f rocker s witch until the requested blower speed is attained. A choice of 7 blower speeds is available. To switch the automatic clima te control off, press - side of rocker switch until symbol OFF is displa yed.
26 Activated Cha rcoal Filte r To select, p ress button. To cancel, p ress button again. An activated c harcoal filter markedly reduces bad odors and remove s pollutants fro m the air enter ing the passenger compart ment. The blo wer speed is slightl y increased to supply a constant volume o f air.

29 Starter Lock-Out Important! Removing the key fro m the steering lock activates t he start lock-ou t. T he engine cannot be started. Turning the key in the steeri ng lock to position 2 d eactivates the start lock-out.

37 Power Clo sing Assist for Doors and Trunk Lid The door s and trunk lid c lose automatically if: • doors ar e pushed against the lock, • trunk lid is lowered against the lock.
38 1 Indicat o r lam p in swit ch locat ed in ce nte r co nso le Anti-Theft A larm Syste m The anti- theft alarm is automatically armed or disarmed with any o f your vehicle's keys or infrared re mote control by locking or unlocking either front door or the trunk.
39 P o w e r S e a t s , F r o nt Warning! Do not adjust the driver's seat while driving. Adjusting the seat w hile driving could cause the driv er to lose control o f the vehicle. Never ride in a moving vehic le with the seat back reclined. Sitting in an excessively reclined po sition can be dangerous.

48 Seat Belt s and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Your vehicle is equipp ed with seat b elts for all seats, e mergency te nsioning retractors for the front sea ts, as well as front and side i mpact airbags, and knee bolsters for driver and front passenger.
49 Seat Belt Warning System With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a warning sounds for a short tim e if the driver' s seat belt is n ot f ast en ed.
50 For saf ety rea sons, a void adjusting the seat or seat back into po sitions which could affect the correc t seat belt position. 83 Cruise Control Any given spee d above approximately 22 mph (35 km/h) can be maintained with the cruise control b y operating the lever. 1 Accelerate an d set: Lift lever briefly t o set speed. Hold lever up to accelerate. 2 Dec elerat e and set: Depress leve r briefly to set sp ee d.
84 Note: If the engine does not brake the vehicle sufficiently while driving on a downgrade, the sp eed you set on the cruise control may be exceed ed and you may have to step on the bra ke pedal to slow down.
85 Parking Assist (Par ktronic) (optional) The Parktronic assists the driv er during parking maneuvers. It v isually and audibly indicates the dista nce between the vehicle and an obstacle. The front area of the vehicle is monitored when driving for ward.

88 Parktronic M alfunction All red seg ments of the warning indicators light up, and a warn ing sounds for 3 seconds, if P arktronic does not functio n prop erly. A dirty sensor could be the reason. After cleaning t he sensors, tur n key in steering lock to position 2.
89 Low Engine Oil Level Wa rning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the oil level warning lamp c omes on and should go out when the engine is running. If the warning la mp co mes on with the engine running a nd at op erating temperature, the en gine oil level has dropped to approximately the minimum mark on t he dipstic k.
90 Outside Te mperature Indic ator The temperature sensor is loca ted in the front bumper area. Due to its location, the sensor can be affec ted by road or engine heat during idli ng or slow dri ving.
91 Low Engine Coola nt Level Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the warning lamp comes on and goes out with the engine running. If the warning lamp does not go out after starting the engine, or if it comes on while driving, then the coo lant level has dropped belo w the required level.
92 Exterior Lamp Failure In dicato r Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a dim indicator lamp co mes on, and goes out when the engine is runnin g. With the ke y in steering loc k position 2 or with the engine running, a b right illumination of this la mp indicate s an exterior lamp failure.

95 Anti lock Bra ke Syste m ( AB S) Important! The ABS i mproves steering c ontrol of the vehicle during braking ma neuvers. Do not pump the brake peda l, rather use fir m, stead y brake pedal p ressure. Pumping the brake ped al defeats the purpose for ABS and si gnificantly reduces braking e ffectiveness.
96 Brake Assist System (B AS) Warning! BAS cannot pre vent the natural Saws of physics fro m acting on the vehicle, nor can it increa se braking efficiency bey ond that affo rded by the condition of the v ehicle brakes and tires or the traction afforded.
97 Electronic St ability P rogram ( ESP) The ESP enhances directional co ntrol and improves tractio n of t he vehicle under any drivi ng condition. Over/understeeri ng of the vehicle is counteracted by applying brakes to the left or right side wheels.
98 ESP Control Sw itch ESP control sw itch located in cent er co ns ol e To improve the vehicle's tracti on when driving with sno w chains, or s tarting off in deep snow, sand or gravel, press the upper hal f of the E SP switch. The ESP warning lamp, located in the speedometer dial, is co ntinuousl y illuminated.
99 Adaptive Damping Syste m (ADS) D e p e nd i n g up o n r o a d s u r f a c e conditions, load, driving style, ADS will auto maticall y adjust the opti mal ride firmness. The malfunction i ndicator la mp comes on with the ke y in steering loc k position 2 a nd goes out when the engine is runnin g.
