Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage front air bags. In the event of a collision, the air bag control unit evaluates the vehicle deceleration. In the first deployment stage, the front air bag is filled with enough propellant gas to reduce the risk of injuries.
G WARNING Only use seat covers which have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle model. Using seat covers or other seat coverings can cause a malfunction of the side impact air bags and/or the pelvis air bags. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for availability.

NECK-PRO head restraints The NECK-PRO head restraints increase protection to the driver's and front passenger's head and neck. To this end, the NECK-PRO head restraints on the driver's and front-passenger seats are moved forwards and upwards in the event of a rear-end collision of a certain severity.

X To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface of the door handle. X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor surface : . X Convenience closing feature: touch recessed sensor surface ; for an extended period ( Y page 80). If you pull on the handle of the trunk lid, only the trunk of the vehicle is unlocked.
Removing the mechanical key X Push release catch : in the direction of the arrow and at the same time, remove mechanical key ; from the SmartKey. SmartKey battery Important safety notes Have the batteries changed at a qualified specialist workshop. G WARNING Batteries contain toxic substances.

Problem Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The engine cannot be started using the SmartKey. The on-board voltage is too low. X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 266).
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo increases a child's risk of injury in the event of R strong braking maneuvers R sudden changes of direction R an accident Unlocking and opening doors from the inside You can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked.
You could therefore be locked out when: R the vehicle is being pushed. R the vehicle is being towed. R the vehicle is being tested on a dynamometer. X To deactivate: press and hold button : for about five seconds until a tone sounds. X To activate: press and hold button ; for about five seconds until a tone sounds.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far as it will go to position 1 . X Turn the mechanical key back and remove it. X Make sure that the doors and the trunk lid are locked. X Insert the mechanical key into the SmartKey. i If you lock the vehicle as described above, the fuel filler flap is not locked.

Closing G WARNING To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the trunk opening when closing the trunk lid.
You can open the trunk lid from the driver's seat when the vehicle is stationary and unlocked. X To open: pull remote operating switch for trunk lid : until the trunk lid opens. Locking the trunk separately You can lock the trunk separately. If you then unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk remains locked and cannot be opened.
X Briefly press emergency release button : . The trunk lid unlocks and opens. The trunk lid can be unlocked and opened with the trunk lid emergency release when the vehicle is stationary or while driving.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X To open: press the corresponding switch. X To close: pull the corresponding switch. i If you press the switch beyond the point of resistance, an automatic opening/ closing process is started in the corresponding direction.
X Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door handle. X Press and hold the & button until the side windows and the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel are fully closed. X Make sure that all the side windows and the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
If a side window is obstructed during closing and reopens again slightly: X Immediately after the window blocks, pull the corresponding switch again until the side window has closed.

Mirrors Rear-view mirror Rear-view mirror (manual anti-glare) X anti-glare mode: flick anti-glare switch : forwards or back. Exterior mirrors Adjusting the exterior mirrors G WARNING Exercise care when using the passenger-side exterior rear view mirror.
Setting the exterior mirrors This function is only available in vehicles for Canada. If the battery has been disconnected or completely discharged, the exterior mirrors must be reset. The exterior mirrors will otherwise not fold in when you select the "Fold in mirrors when locking" function in the on-board computer ( Y page 181).
X Make sure that the vehicle is stationary and that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button ; for the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side. X Engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the preset parking position.
X Adjust the seat ( Y page 88). X On the driver's side, adjust the steering wheel ( Y page 92) and the exterior mirrors ( Y page 93). X Briefly press the M memory button and then press storage position button 1 , 2 or 3 within three seconds. The settings are stored in the selected preset position.

With the engine running: depending on the ambient light, the daytime running lamps or the low-beam headlamps are switched on. When the low-beam headlamps are switched on, the L indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up.
X Press the R button. The yellow R indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up. X To switch off the rear fog lamp: press the R button. The yellow R indicator lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.
The hazard warning lamps automatically switch on if: R an air bag is deployed. R the vehicle is slowed down rapidly from a speed of over 45 mph (70 km/h) and comes to a halt. X To switch on the hazard warning lamps: press button : . All turn signals flash.
X To activate: activate the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function using the on- board computer ( Y page 178). X Turn the light switch to c or à . X Press the combination switch beyond the pressure point in the direction of arrow : ( Y page 101).
X Drive with the headlamps switched on. The level of moisture diminishes, depending on the length of the journey and the weather conditions (humidity and temperature). If the level of moisture does not diminish: X Have the headlamps checked at a qualified specialist workshop.

X Turn housing cover : counter-clockwise and pull it out. X Turn bulb holder ; counter-clockwise and pull it out.
X Take the bulb out of bulb holder ; . X Insert the new bulb into bulb holder ; . X Insert bulb holder ; . X Align housing cover : and turn it clockwise until it engages. Cornering light function (Bi-Xenon headlamps) X Switch off the lights. X Open the hood.
X To open: turn rotary catch : 90° in the direction of the arrow and remove side trim panel ; . X To close: insert side trim panel ; and turn rotary catch : 90° in the opposite direction to the arrow. Tail lamp X Switch off the lights. X Open the trunk.

Replacing the wiper blades, option 1 Removing the wiper blades X Remove the wiper blade from the retaining pin on the wiper arm in the direction of the arrow. Installing the wiper blades X Push the new wiper blade onto the retaining pin on the wiper arm in the opposite direction to the arrow.
X Select another wiper speed on the combination switch. X Have the windshield wipers checked at a qualified specialist workshop. The spray nozzles are misaligned The windshield washer fluid from the spray nozzles no longer hits the center of the windshield.

Operating the climate control systems Activating/deactivating climate control Important information G WARNING When the climate control system is deactivated, the outside air supply and circulation are also deactivated. Only choose this setting for a short time.
In automatic mode, the set temperature is maintained automatically at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air distribution. Automatic mode will achieve optimal operation if cooling with air dehumidification is also activated.
X To switch on: press the á button. The indicator lamp in the á button lights up. The temperature setting for the driver's side is not adopted for the front-passenger side.
i You should only select this setting until the windshield is clear again. Windows fogged up on the outside X Switch on the windshield wipers. X Press the _ button repeatedly until the O or P symbol appears in the display. i You should only select this setting until the windshield is clear again.

Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as a garage) which are not properly ventilated. If you think that exhaust gas fumes are entering the vehicle while driving, have the cause determined and corrected immediately. If you must drive under these conditions, drive only with at least one window fully open at all times.

This could cause the gasoline to spray back out when removing the fuel pump nozzle, which could cause personal injury.
X Completely insert the filler neck of the fuel pump nozzle into the tank and refuel. X Only fill the tank until the pump nozzle switches off. i Do not add any more fuel after the pump stops filling for the first time. Otherwise, fuel may leak out. Closing X Replace the cap on the filler neck and turn clockwise until it engages audibly.
