Introduction Congratulations on your pur chase of the Audiophile USB by M-Audio. The Audiophile USB is y our audio and MIDI upgrade for an y PC or Macintosh computer*, utilizing the convenience of y our computer’ s USB port—no tools or computer disassembly is requir ed.

Front Panel Featur es 1. Headphone Out: This is a stereo headphone output on a 1/4” TRS jack. Connect only a ster eo plug to this jack. 2. Headphone Lev el: This knob controls the lev el of the stereo output signal sent to the headphone jack.
2. Left Input and Right Input (RCA Analog Inputs): These jacks input analog audio from a variety of external sour ces. Each jack is female RCA, compatible with common male RCA cables. When plugs are inserted into the 1/4” jacks, these RCA inputs are defeated.
Hardwar e Installation Find a conv enient spot near your computer for the Audiophile USB.With the Audiophile’ s pow er switched “Off, ” plug the included power suppl y into your wall sock et, and plug its 2.5mm plug into the Audiophile’ s 9V A C 1000 mA Pow er Jack.
4. The Wizard reports that Windows has finished installing the software. Click “Finish”. Y our Audiophile USB is ready f or action. After completion of the driver installation, Windows ma y r equire y ou to r estart Windows. If it does request a restart, remo v e the Driv ers CD fr om the CD drive and r espond by clicking “Y es”.

Audiophile USB MIDI Setup The Audiophile’ s MIDI input and output por ts ma y be connected to external MIDI devices. The following diagram shows connection to a MIDI ke yboard instrument, which is also being used as a sound module .
Tr oubleshooting Prob lem: No sound output. Po ssible Cause 1: The Audiophile USB har dware or softwar e device driv ers are not properl y installed. See the installation sections of this manual for further information.
Prob lem: Repetitious Sound. P ossible Cause: An IRQ resour ce conflict with the USB controller and another device (PC only). Often this will result in a small segment of sound (0.5 to 1 second) repeating itself o ver and ov er , sometimes completely locking up the computer .
Prob lem: I am pla ying A C-3 or surr ound sound data fr om a software a pplication on m y computer , sending the data fr om Audiophile USB S/PDIF Out to m y home theater’ s A C-3 decoder . How ev er , the decoder does not r ecognize the signal and ther efor e refuses to put out an y audio .

Appendix B - Driver/Software Install, Step by Step W indows XP: 1. During this installation, the Audiophile USB must be pow ered off. Begin the installation process b y inserting the Drivers CD R OM in y our computer . 2. A Setup window will appear . Click “Next, ” to continue .
5. A third Softwar e Installation window will appear . Click “Continue Anywa y . ” 6. An M-Audio USB Audiophile Setup window will appear next. Make sur e both the Enable Digital CD and Enable DMA T ransfer Mode box es ar e check ed, then click “Next.
9. When you ar e completely r estarted and at the desktop, power up the USB Audiophile. 10. The New Har dware Wizard will appear . Please select “Install the software automaticall y (Recommended), ” then click “Next. ” 11. A Har dware Installation window will come up .
