1 I MPORT A NT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS This manual co ntains important ins tructions that shou ld be followe d during insta llation and mainte- nance of your Series 610 UPS and batteries. ! WARNING Exercise extreme care when hand ling UPS cabi nets to avoid equipment damage or i njury to personnel.
Introd uction 2 1.0 I NTRODUCTION 1.1 System Description The role of a UPS system is to supply uninterrupt ible, clean power to the cri tical load. The UPS main- tains a full-v oltage, low-distort ion output, even if the utility source power sags, b ecomes distorted or fails.
Introd uction 3 1.2 Reliability Reliability is the most important design goa l for Uninterruptible Po wer Systems. Liebert Series 610 UPS systems have demonstrated reliability by achieving a field-proven critical bus MTBF in excess of 2 million hou rs.
Introd uction 4 1.3 Safety Precautions Read this manual thoroughly, paying spec ial attention to the sections that apply to you, before work- ing with the UPS. Also refer to the battery manufacturer’s ma nual, av ailable on the manufacturer’s Web site, before workin g on or near the battery.
Introd uction 5 1.4 Modes of Operation Refer to 2.0 - Theor y of Operati on and 3.0 - Op eration for more details. 1.4.1 Normal—Load on UPS The utility AC source provides power to the rectif ier/charger in the UPS modu le.
Introd uction 6 1.5 Operator Controls Liebert Series 61 0 UPS modules are equipped with a microprocessor -based Op erator Display Screen and Control Panel de signed for conv enient and reliab le operation.
Introd uction 7 1.6 Options A number of options are available from Liebert for your UPS system. (Some options are not available for all ratings.) Described below are the most frequ ently provided op tions. Note that the b attery items ( 1 - 3 ) are required to complete the UPS system.
Introd uction 8 12. Customer Alarm Interface This optional interf ace board allows the input and display of 8 alarms from customer-supplied contacts, each with a customer-sel ected name of up to 16 characters.
Theory of Operati on 9 2.0 T HEORY OF O PERATION 2.1 General Compone nt Descriptions The UPS system includes all of the equipment necessary to continuously provide computer-grade AC power to a critical load, even when there is an inte rruption of the utility powe r.
Theory of Operati on 10 2.2 Det ailed Component Descrip tions 2.2.1 Controls Hardware The Series 610 UPS Operator Interface Display System is designed to provide all of t he information that is required for the operation of each UPS module. The following is a list of the hardware features: 1.
Theory of Operati on 11 2.2.2 Rectifier/Charger The UPS module rectifier/charger consists of an in put circuit breaker, AC cu rrent limiting circuit, battery equalize charge circuit, DC filter, battery charge current limiti ng circuit and bridge rectifiers.
Theory of Operati on 12 2.2.3 Battery Charging Circuit The UPS module charging circuit is capab le of recharging the battery plant to 95% of full capacity within 10 times the discharge time . Recharging the last 5% takes lo nger because of characteristics inherent in the battery.
Theory of Operati on 13 2.2.4 Inverter The inverter is a s olid state devi ce that converts th e DC output of the rectifier/charger or the battery to AC power. Operation The inverter converts DC power—from either the battery or the rectifier/ charger—into three pulse- width-modulated/six-step waveforms.
Theory of Operati on 14 2.2.5 St atic Byp ass A static bypass is an integral part of the UPS. Th e static by pass consists of a static bypass switch, consisting o f two reverse-pa ralleled SCRs (s ilicon-contro lled rectifiers ) per phase a nd bypass power switching devices (motor-o pe rated circuit breakers).
Theory of Operati on 15 T ransfer and Retransfer Con ditions 1. Automatic Transfers to Bypass: Critical bus con ditions that will initiate an automatic transf er of the critical load from the UPS invert er output to the bypas s source are: a. Output Overload: overcurrent co ndition in excess of the current versus time overload capacity curve.
