v About your printer The Optra E312 printer combi nes the quality of a laser printer with a conveniently small footprint for a perfect fit. With its easy setup, you’l l be printing in no time.

vii Performa nce The Optra E312 printer prints up to 10 pa ges per minute for quick job turnaround. It comes with 4MB of memory, expandable to 68 MB to print complex jobs quickly. You ca n also install an optional flash memory card to store forms, macros and downloade d fonts.

1 What’s in the box 1 The basics What’s in th e box 1 Remove the print er and all a ccessories fr om the packaging ca rton. Save the car ton and packi ng material s in case you need to repack the print er for servic e or storage.

Using a parallel interface cable Your printer requires an IEEE-1284 compl iant parallel cable.
5 Conne cting the printer to your co mputer Using a USB cable If you are connecting your printer to a PC with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable, we recommend Lexmark part number 12A2405 ( 2 m). If you use something other than this cable, you ma y not be able to use all of your printer’s functions.

10 Chap ter 1: The ba sics Loading paper You can load paper in the automatic paper feede r, which holds up t o 150 sheets, or the manual feeder, which holds 1 sheet at a time. 1 To print fr om the automatic pap er feeder, ext end the paper su pport. 2 Before loadi ng paper, flex the sheets back and forth to l oosen them, then fan t hem.

To print a test page, the print c artridge must be install ed (see Insta lling the print cartridge ). 21 Printer drivers 2 Printer drivers Included with your printer is the Driv ers, MarkVisi on and Ut ilitie s CD, a compact dis c containing printer drivers and utiliti es for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4. 0, Windows 3.1x, Macintosh and OS/2 operating syst ems.

Automated fax system In the U.S. and Canada, you can get a list of avail able drivers by calling the Lexmark Automated Fax System.

25 Paper ha ndling 3 Paper handling Your printer has two standard paper sources: an automatic paper feeder, which holds up to 150 sheets of plain paper and a single sheet manual feeder. Use the automatic paper fe eder for the print jobs you do most often.
26 Chapter 3 : Paper ha ndling Paper types and sizes Selecting the right paper type reduces printing problems. For best pri nt quality, use 20 l b (75 g/m2) xerographic paper. If the paper has a preferred pri nt side, load it with the print side faci ng you.
27 Paper types and siz es Paper Load A4, A5, B5, lette rhead, legal and executi ve-size paper one at a time f rom the manual feeder or load up to 150 sheets in the automa tic paper feeder. Preprinted papers such as letterhead must be able to withstand temperatures up to 200°C (39 2°F) without melting or r eleasing hazar dous emissions.
28 Chapter 3 : Paper ha ndling Load envelopes in the center of the manual feeder or automatic paper fe eder and slide the paper guides snugly against the sides of the envelopes. When printing on e nvelopes: • Try a sample of any enve lopes you are considering using with the printer bef ore buying larg e qu anti ties .
29 Paper types and siz es • Load envelopes vertic ally, flap side down so the stamp area is in the t op left corner. • Adjust the left and rig ht paper guides to fit the width of the envelopes. Labels For occasional label printing, use paper labels desig ned for laser pr inters.

34 Chapter 3 : Paper ha ndling Cle arin g paper jams If you get a paper jam, the Paper J am indicator light prompts you to clear the paper path. If the paper has just s tarted to feed from the pape r feeder when the jam occurs: 1 Pull the pa per straigh t up out of the paper feeder.
35 Clearing paper jams 5 Grasp the paper on both sides and pul l the paper toward yo u. 6 Make sure ther e is no more paper in the printer. 7 Re-i nsert t he prin t car tridge . 8 Clos e the p rinter cover t o res ume pri nting.
