10 The pr inter also offers flexible paper ha ndling. It suppo r ts a wide vari ety of pap er sizes, from A 5 to A3 and 11x17 in., an d has a s tandard mul tipur p ose feeder that makes it eas y to pr int on e nv elopes, transparenc ies, labels, ca rd stock, an d non-st andar d size paper .
11 2 A v oiding print quality pr oblems T o pre v ent prin t quality pr oblems, do not touc h the roller on the bottom of the toner car tr idge, the shi ny green tube o n the ph otodev eloper , the fil m on the tran sfer belt, or the fuser rol lers. Scratch es or finger prin ts on a ny of these s urfaces can affect pr int quality .
12 3 Canceling a print job T o cancel a pr int jo b: 1 Press Menu . Job Menu appears on the first line of the di splay and Cancel Job appears on the seco nd lin e. 2 Press Select . Canceli ng Job br iefly app ears on the displ ay . Th e pr inter f inishes pr inti ng any page al ready being pr inted , and the n stops.
13 4 Contr olling printed output Y our pr inte r driver provid es you with the best qual ity outpu t for v ar ious typ es of p rint ing needs. Howe ver , you ma y want more c ontrol over how your print ed doc ument will look. Y our pr inte r default is se t to give you the best screen frequenc y se tting for high qual ity busines s graphics.
14 T oner darkness This sett ing le ts you adju st the amo unt of to ner rel eased dur ing prin ting. Y our prin ter offers five T oner Dark ness setti ngs. The values range from 1 ( lightest settin g) to 5 (dar kest se tting) . The default tone r dark ness setti ng is 4.
15 Screen frequency The scre en freque ncy is the number o f halfto ne cells p er in ch. A h igher scree n freq uency s etting increa ses th e number of halfton e cells per inc h. Incre asing the number o f halfto ne cel ls per inch doe s not neces sar ily give you better qual ity .
16 5 Using the operator panel This sec tion con tains informati on abou t underst anding the ope rator panel, c hangi ng pr inter s ettings, and und erstand ing ope rator pane l menus. Y ou can change m ost pr inter s etting s from your so ftware applic ation or prin ter dr iver .
17 Using the op erator pan el b uttons Use the fi v e ope rator panel buttons to open a m enu, scrol l throug h a list of values, ch ange pr inter settings, and respon d to pr inter messag es.
18 Y ou can modif y pr inter se ttings by: • Selecti ng a setti ng from a list of values • Changing a n On/Off setting • Changing a numer ica l settin g T o select a new v a lue as a setting : 1 F r om a Ready status mess age, press Menu . The menu na mes ap pear .
19 4 V er ify t hat the o ptions you in stalled are corre ctly lis ted unde r “ Inst all ed Features. ” If an optio n you insta lled is not liste d, tur n th e pri nter off, unplug th e power cord, a nd reinst all the o ptio n.
20 6 Using the Print and Hold function When sendi ng a job to the pr inter , y ou can specify in the driver that you want the printer to hold the job in memo r y . When you are rea dy to pr int the job, y ou must g o to the pr inter and use the op erator panel menus to ide ntify whi ch held job you want to pri nt.
21 Accessing he ld jobs from the operato r panel 1 T o access held j obs from the operator pa nel: – If the pr inter is Busy , press Me nu and the Job M enu appear s.
22 Repeat Print If you send a Re peat Pr int job, the pr inter pr ints all re quested copi es of the j ob and stores the job in memor y s o you can pr in t addition al cop ies late r . Y o u can prin t addit ional co pies as long a s the job remain s store d in memory .
23 Confident i al jobs When you sen d a job to th e pr inter , you can ent er a per sonal id entifica tion number (PIN) from the dri v er . The PI N must be four digits using the numbers 1 – 6.
24 7 Sending a job to print T o send a job to th e pri nter : 1 Open the file you want to pr int . 2 F r om the Fi le menu, ch oose Print . 3 V er ify t hat the c orrect pr inte r is s elected in the di alog box. 4 Adjust t he pr inter settings accor ding to your need.
25 8 Color correction Color C orrection lets y ou mod ify the color setting s used to p rin t your docume nts. The C olor Co rrection settings you can choo se from are: Auto , Display , CMYK, Off, Vivid, a nd Manual . A uto is the default setting wh en the p rin ter is s hipped fr om the factor y .
26 If you use this s etting without the necess ar y colo r managem ent so ftware or your appl ication d oes not provide the correc t informa tion, your pr inted output m ay ha ve unexpected resu lts. Off When you sel ect Off a s your colo r corr ection, t he pr int er expects to r eceive the neces sar y colo r correcti on from your so ftware.
27 9 Managing color There ar e many color managem ent syst ems on the mar ket today . They range from simp le s watchbook s to spec ially des igned and design ated color ser vers. A color ma nageme nt system (CMS) helps you match colors acr oss a number of de vice s, includ ing scann ers, monitor s, and print ers.
28 P opular color man agement systems There ar e many color mana gement sy stems for you to choose from. T he type of CMS you ch oose impacts the co lor qual ity of your p rin ted outp ut. Choose a CMS th at best me ets your cost an d performa nce needs.
29 10 Understanding color Y our pr inter gives you the power to communicate in colo r . Col or attracts attent ion, comm ands respec t, and adds value to your pri nted ma teria l or infor mation. Using co lor inc reases readershi p and is read more ofte n than th e same ma teri al pr inted in black and white.
30 Primary c olor s Notice the three pr imar y addi tive colors r ed, green, an d blue in the il lustratio n. Y ou can see that when all thre e colors a re comb ined, you get wh ite. Howe ver , look at th e area whe re any two colo rs ov erl ap . What you see is cyan, mage nta, or yellow .
31 Color difference Most sof tware applic ations tod ay provide us with a WYSIW YG (What Y ou S ee Is Wha t Y ou Get) environment. This he lps u s dev e lop the look of o ur docum ent. Howev er , the difference between th e additive and subtra ctive colors m a y som etimes c ause a pr oblem between wh at you see and what you get.
32 As your monito r ages, the c olors o n the scree n als o change. Chang ing the toner ca r tr idges, photodev elope r car tr idg e, and paper in your prin ter also has a ma jor impa ct on the color i n your printe d document .
33 11 Choosing media The pr int qua lity and f eed reliabili ty of your pr inter an d opti ons can var y with the type an d size of print media you use.
34 Smoothness The degree of smooth ness of p aper dir ectly affects prin t quality . If the pa per is t oo rough, the tone r does not f use to the pape r proper ly , r esulting in poo r pr int qua lity . If the paper i s too smo oth, it can cause pa per feeding pr oblems.
35 Unsatisfactor y paper The following papers are not r ecommend ed for use with th e pr inter : • Chemical ly trea ted pap ers use d to make copi es without carbon paper , also known as carbonless .
36 T o help av oid jams or poor p rint quali ty: • Always use new , undama ged pap er . • Before loading paper , know the recomm ended pr int side of th e paper you ’ re us ing. Th is informati on is us ually i ndicated on the p aper package. • Do not use paper tha t you hav e cut or tri mmed yourse lf.
37 F or best perfor mance, use env elopes ma de from 75 g/m 2 (20 lb bond) paper . Y ou can use up to 105 g / m 2 (28 l b bond) weig ht for the multipur pose feeder as long as th e cotton c ontent is 25% or less. Env elopes wi th 100% cot ton con tent must not e xceed 90 g/m 2 (24 lb bon d) weigh t.

39 12 Loading media This sec tion p rovides informat ion abo ut loa ding m edia in th e input op tions. Prope r pap er loadi ng helps prev e nt paper j ams and e nsure trou ble-free pr intin g. Before loading p aper , find th e recomm ended p rin t side of the pape r you ’ re using.
40 13 Loading the high capacity feeder Y ou can attach an option al hig h capaci ty feeder to your pr inter. This can provid e an add itional i nput of 3,000 she ets of pape r . Note: Do not lo ad any pr int med ia other th an paper i n the hig h capaci ty feeder .
41 3 Loosen th e left a nd ri ght pap er guide thumbsc rews. 4 Slide th e guide s left or ri ght to th e correct posit ion for the size pap er you are loading (A4 o r Letter).
42 6 Flex the sheets b ack and f or th to lo osen them , and th en fan them. Do not fold or creas e the pape r . Straighten the edge s of the s tack on a lev el surface. Note: Do not exceed the m aximum stack height. Overfilling th e tray ma y caus e jams.
43 8 Press the paper tray button The pape r tra y lowers to let you load up ano ther 500 s heets of paper . Note: If there i s only a p ar ti al sta ck of paper in the tray , the paper l ow sensor will not a llow the tray to go down. Add mor e paper to lower the tray .
44 14 Loading the m ultipurpose f eeder The multip ur pos e feeder can h old sev eral sizes and ty pes of pape r , such as transpa rencie s and env e lopes. It i s useful for single p age pr inti ng on lette rhead, co lore d paper , or other speci al paper.
45 T rouble-free printing • Load only one size of paper or envelopes at a time in the multipur pos e feeder . • T o achie v e th e best po ssible pri nt qualit y , use only hi gh-qual ity pr int me dia that is designed for use in l aser pr inters.

52 15 Output bins Y our pr inter has two output bins: the standa rd output bin on top of th e pri nter and an exit tra y (bin 1). Y our pr inte r directs all med ia except transpare ncies an d env elopes to the st andar d output bin . T ransparencies ar e automat icall y directe d to the exit tra y (bin 1) to r educe c url ing.
53 16 Loading a paper tra y The pr inter lets you know when you need to l oad paper. If a tra y has less tha n 50 sh eets of pap er , Tray x Low ap pears o n the di splay , where x corr esponds to a paper tra y . Open t he tra y and l oad pap er to remove the message.
54 2 Pre ss the m etal plate dow n unt il it l oc k s. 3 Squeeze the l eft gui de and sl ide it to the pos ition for the size pape r you are lo ading. 4 Release t he paper guide. Note: The positi on of t he left pap er guide tells th e pri nter the size of the p aper in t he tra y .

Note: This sett ing se r ves as a visua l remin der only ; it has n o effect on the o peration of the pr inter .

58 17 Using the hea vy media tra y The opti onal heavy me dia tray replaces tra y 1. For instr uctions on removing a nd ins talling t ra y 1, see Exchanging tr ay 1 . The heavy media t ra y is spe cially desi gned for use with heavier plain pa per , glossy paper , transpar encies, lab els, and car d sto c k.
59 7 Press Menu unti l you see C ustom Type 1 , and then press S elect . 8 Press Menu until you see the type o f media you loaded in the heavy medi a tra y , and then press Select . 9 Press Go . The pr inter r etur ns to the Ready st a te. Exchanging tray 1 1 Pull tray 1 out unt il it sto ps.
60 3 Lower the front o f the tray and pull the t ra y from the drawer slides. 4 Align th e rollers on the side of th e paper tray with slo ts on th e left and r ight drawer slides. 5 Place th e drawer rollers i nto the drawer slides and sli de the drawer in un til it sto ps.
61 7 Slide th e tray in until both tra y sto ps pass the slid e stops. Note: Y ou onl y need to l ift the tray high enoug h f o r the tra y stop to move ov er the sli de stop. If the slides mov e when you are install ing the tray , y ou can hold one s lide while you inser t the drawer , an d then hold the oth er slid e.

F or example, let ’ s say you hav e loaded two option al tra ys wi th the same size pr int medi a and both a re set to the same pape r type.
68 20 Tips f or successful printing Storing paper Proper ly s tori ng the med ia hel ps ensure trouble-free pr inti ng. Use the following guid elines: • F or bes t result s, store media in an e nvironment wher e the tem perature is approximately 21 ° C (70 ° F) and the re lative humidit y is 40%.

Whe n a photodeveloper reaches the end of i ts lif e, the p rinter disp la ys 84 Black Photo Dev Exhausted or 84 Color Photo D evs Exhausted . This m essage indi cates i t is time to repla ce one or more sp ecified photodevelopers.
76 2 Pull the waste toner ar m aw a y fr om the photodev eloper . 3 Use the tab to pull th e photo dev e loper appr o ximate ly halfway out of the pr inter . This m essag e indic ates it i s time for you to re place th e fuse r . For best pri nt quality , make sure you replac e the fu ser when the pr inter displays 80 Fuser Life Warning .

86 2 Align th e new fuser with the ope ning i n the pr inter . 3 Lower the fuser un til it snaps in to pla ce. 4 Remov e the oil coat ing roll from the old fus er .

This mes sage indi cates that you must replace th e oil coat ing roll to co ntinue pr inting.
