Chapter 1. Important safety information CAUTION: Before using this manual, it is important that you read and understand all the related safety information for this product. Refer to the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that you received with this product for the latest safety information.

Chapter 2. Overview This guide provides information about installing and or r eplacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs). However , this guide does not include procedures for all parts. It is expected that cables, switches, and certain mechanical parts be replaced by trained service personnel without the need for step-by-step procedur es.
Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed fr om the computer and you are r eady to install the new part. Static electricity , although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer components and parts.
Locations This section provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, contr ols, and components of the computer . Locating controls and connectors on the front of your computer Figure 1 shows the location of the contr ols and connectors on the front of your computer .
Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the location of connectors on the r ear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description USB connector Used to attach a device that requir es a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector , such as a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, a USB scanner , or a USB printer . If you have mor e than eight USB devices, you can purchase a USB hub, which you can use to connect additional USB devices.
Locating components To open the computer cover , see “Opening the cover” on page 12. Chapter 3. Installing options and replacing hardware This chapter provides an intr oduction to the features and options that ar e available for your computer . Yo u can expand the capabilities of your computer by adding memory modules, adapter cards, or drives.
Installing internal options Important Read “Handling static-sensitive devices” on page 4 before opening the computer cover . Opening the cover Important T urn of f the computer and wait three to five minutes to let the computer cool before opening the computer cover .
Accessing system board components and drives To access system board components and the drives: 1. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 12. 2. On some models, you might need to pivot the drive bay assembly upward and remove the har d disk drive to access the internal components.
5. Open the retaining clips. 6. Position the memory module over the memory slot. Make sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the system board. Push the memory module straight down into the slot until the r etaining clips close.
Installing an adapter card This section provides information and instr uctions for installing adapter cards. Y our computer has one PCI adapter card slot and one PCI Express x16 adapter card slot. To install an adapter card: 1. Open the computer cover .
Installing internal drives This section provides information and instr uctions for installing internal drives. Internal drives are devices that your computer uses to r ead and store data. Yo u can add drives to your computer to increase storage capacity and to enable your computer to read other types of media.
Drive specifications Y our computer comes with the following factory-installed drives: v A 3.5-inch hard disk drive in bay 1 v An optical drive in bay 2 (some models) Any bay that does not have a drive installed has a static shield and bay panel installed.
Installing a drive in bay 2 To install an optical drive or an additional hard disk drive in bay 2: 1. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 12. 2. Remove the metal shield from the drive bay by using a flat-blade scr ewdriver to gently pry it loose.
3. Locate one of the extra five-wire power cables and connect it to the drive. What to do next: v To work with another option, go to the appropriate section. v To complete the installation, go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 35.
Replacing the battery Y our computer has a special type of memory that maintains the date, time, and settings for built-in features, such as parallel-port assignments (configuration). A battery keeps this information active when you turn off the computer .
Replacing the power supply Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer . To obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide , go to: http://www .
5. Disconnect the power supply cables from the power connectors 1 and 2 and from all drives. Note: Yo u might need to remove the har d disk drive to gain easy access to the power connector 2 . See “Replacing a hard disk drive” on page 25.
Note: Use only the screws pr ovided by Lenovo. 9. Install and tighten the four screws at the r ear of the chassis to secure the power supply . 10. Check the position of the voltage-selection switch on the rear of the computer . Use a ballpoint pen to slide the switch, if necessary .
3. Disconnect the heat sink and fan assembly cable from the system boar d. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 9. 4. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly from the system boar d by pivoting the lever 1 securing the heat sink and fan assembly until it is fully in the up position.
Replacing a hard disk drive Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer . To obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide , go to: http://www .
6. Remove the failing hard disk drive fr om the bracket by flexing the bracket. 7. To install the new drive into the bracket, flex the bracket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the bracket with the holes in the hard disk drive.
2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the optical drive. 3. Disconnect the signal and power cables from the r ear of the optical drive. 4. Press the optical drive lock 1 . 5. Slide the optical drive out the rear of the drive bay assembly .
6. Install the new optical drive into the bay until it snaps into position. 7. Connect the signal and power cables to the rear of the optical drive. 8.
2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system boar d. See “Accessing system board components and drives” on page 13. 3. Locate the memory slots. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 9. 4. Remove the memory module being replaced by opening the r etaining clips as shown.
5. Position the replacement memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the system board. Push the memory module straight down into the slot until the retaining clips close.
2. Rotate the adapter card r etainer 1 to the open position to remove the failing adapter card. 3. Remove the failing adapter card out of the chassis. 4. Remove the new adapter card fr om its static-protective package. 5. Install the new adapter card 2 into the adapter car d slot.
5. Remove the screw that secur es the card r eader to the chassis. 6. Remove the card r eader from the chassis. 7. Install the new card r eader into the chassis and align the screw hole in the card r eader with the hole in the chassis. 8. Install the screw to secur e the card r eader to the chassis.

Note: Y our mouse might be connected to a standard mouse connector 1 or a USB connector 2 . Depending on where your mouse is connected, see “Locating connectors on the rear of your computer” on page 6 or “Locating controls and connectors on the fr ont of your computer” on page 5.
Chapter 4. Completing the parts replacement After completing all parts replacements, you need to close the cover and r econnect cables, such as power cords. Depending on the parts r eplaced, you might need to confirm the updated information in the Setup Utility program.

Chapter 5. Security features To help prevent har dware theft and unauthorized access to your computer , several security lock options are available. In addition to a physical lock, unauthorized use of your computer can be prevented by a softwar e lock that locks the keyboard until a correct passwor d is typed in.
Password protection To deter unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility program to set a passwor d. When you turn on your computer , you are prompted to type the password to unlock the keyboar d for normal use.
