1-10 1.4. Setting Up and Interfacing Bef ore you can use the printer f or the first time, you must set up the printer by installing the printer components and interf acing with the computer . The steps to be follow ed in setting up are: 1. Open the top cov er .

1-12 3. The bottom of the toner container is sealed with a sealing strip. P eel off the seal on the toner container and carefully pull off and dispose of the sealing strip. Note Be sure to peel the seal off the toner container before the toner container is fitted into the de veloper unit.
1-13 Chapter 1 Installing the P age Pr inter 5. When the toner container is installed correctly on the dev eloper , push the top of the container unit (“ PUSH HERE ”) until it locks in. Note Mak e sure that the toner container is properly locked in the printer .
1-14 4. Install the W aste T oner Bottle The waste toner bottle is in the toner kit supplied with the printer . The waste toner bottle m ust be installed in the printer . Install the waste toner bottle in the printer as f ollows . 1. T ak e the waste toner bottle from the toner kit supplied.

Ensuring that it is correctly inser ted, close the side cover . Note Although the waster toner bottle will be tilted slightly tow ard you, it will install properly when the side cov er is closed.
1-16 5. Adjusting the P aper Guides of the P aper Cassette By adjusting the position of the paper guides and paper stopper inside the cassette included with this printer , the cassette ma y be set to supply paper of standard sizes from A5 size to ledger size .
1-17 Chapter 1 Installing the P age Pr inter 1. Open the cassette cov er . 2. Adjust the paper guides. Adjust by pressing the lock le vers as sho wn in the figure and aligning the paper guides to the paper size to be used.
1-18 3. Chec k the position of the paper guides and release the lock le vers. 4. Align the paper stopper to the correct position f or the paper size to be used and firmly push it into place in the order 1 , 2 .
1-19 Chapter 1 Installing the P age Pr inter 6. Add P aper Be sure to use paper that has been unwrapped as recently as possib le. P aper which has been e xposed to the air for a long time will absorb moisture, causing multiple sheets to f eed at a time and thus resulting in paper jams.
1-20 2. Set the paper in the cassette. The paper siz e must match the cassette size . T ap the edges of the paper to align them neatly . Don’t put in more paper than the limit indicated on the cassette. (The cassette should hold appro ximately 250 sheets of paper with a 75 g/m 2 [20 lb .

Note Some types of paper (such as thick paper) ma y be hard to place in the cassette using this method. If this is the case, the process is f acilitated by inser ting the paper from the back, as sho wn in the figure below .

1-23 Chapter 1 Installing the P age Pr inter 7. Open the P aper Stopper on the F ace-down Output T ray (if required) Open the paper stopper as shown belo w . Note Depending on the paper , printing without opening the paper stopper may result in more e venly aligned output.
1-24 9. Connect the Printer to the Computer The printer has two computer cable connectors and a slot f or installing an option interface. The one marked “ ” is f or a parallel (Centronics standard) interf ace. The one marked “ IOIOI ” is for a serial (RS-232C/RS-422A) interf ace.
1-25 Chapter 1 Installing the P age Pr inter P arallel interface Plug one end of the cable into the connector marked P arallel ( ) on the printer . Close the clips on both sides to hold it in place. Plug the other end into a parallel (Centronics) interf ace connector on your computer .
1-26 10. Attach the P ower Cord 1. Check that the po wer switch is off . 2. Plug one end of the power cord into the receptacle at the bac k of the printer . 3. Plug the other end into the wall outlet. 11. Print a Status P age T est that the printer works by printing out a status page as follo ws.

1-28 13. Set the Emulation Mode The printer emulates the operation of fiv e other printers. It is factory-set to emulate the HP LaserJet 5M at pow er-up . If you primarily use software that suppor ts HP LaserJet 5M, or that suppor ts the K yocer a pr inter itself, the f actor y setting is the one you w ant.

1-34 Setting Each Mode First Mode (A utomatic Manual Feeding) The printer automatically feeds the paper placed on the m ulti-pur pose tra y regardless of the current paper source selection.

Memor y Car d A memory card is a microchip card containing, for e xample, nonresident f onts and/or macros , f or ms, etc. The pr inter reads the contents of the card into its internal memor y when power is s witched on. The presence of this data in the pr inter memory can be confir med on the status printout.

1-40 1.7. Memor y Expansion Installation In this section is e xplained how to e xpand the pr inter’ s memor y . Expanded printer memor y enables you to print more comple x pages, download more f onts, and define more macros .

1-42 3. Pull the main circuit board all the wa y out of the pr inter . Note Bef ore pulling the main board out, clean an area on the table, etc., at the bac k of the printer’s rear panel. F oreign objects, accidentally sticking to the bac k of the main board, can cause serious damage to the printer .

1-44 Removing SIMMs T o remov e a SIMM, carefully pull the end catches slightly outwards and tilt the SIMM as shown, then pull the SIMM out of the sock et. Re verse the procedure under Withdra wing the Main Circuit Board from the Printer to put the main circuit board back into the printer .

2-4 Interface Indicator The interface indicator sho ws which of the pr inter’ s interfaces is currently activ e. It uses the following abbreviations: PAR Standard bi-directional parallel interface S.
2-5 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer P aper Siz e Indicator The paper size indicator indicates the paper siz e of the cassette currently installed in the printer or the paper size currently set f or the multi-pur pose tra y . The following abbreviations are used to indicate the paper sizes.

2-7 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer Contr ol Keys The control panel ke ys are used to configure the pr inter . Note Settings made with these ke ys effect only the interf ace currently in use. K ey Function ON LINE Switches the printer on-line and off-line.
2-8 K ey Function — 1. Enables access to the desired item or entering of numeric values. In some of the control procedures, the ( CONTINUE ) and ( FORM FEED ) keys are used to enter or exit the sub items. 2. Selects the cassette feed or multi purpose tray feed.
2-9 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer 2.2. Operating Pr ocedures This section e xplains basic operations of the printer and procedures leading up to and including printing. Operating Precautions ● Do not turn off power during pr inting. This ma y result in a paper jam or damage to the printer .
2-10 Switching P ower On Check that the po wer cord is securely plugged in at both ends. Check that the printer is connected to the computer (See page 1-24). 1. Push the power switch to the ON ( | ) position. 2. W ait for the printer to warm up. Dur ing war m-up the message display will first indicate Self test followed by Please wait .
2-11 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer Basic Printing Operations The flow of basic operations to print is giv en below . Ke ys on the control panel are explained after that. For details on using the MODE ke y , be sure to read the section “Mode Select Men u” at the end of this manual in conjunction with this section.
2-12 Selecting the Output T ra y Printed paper can be output on either the face-up output tra y or the face-do wn output tra y . Selecting the face-up output tray will cause paper to be stacked with the printed surface facing up. Selecting the face-down output tray will cause paper to be stacked with the printed surface facing down.
2-13 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer Feed Selection Use the FEED ke y to select whether to feed paper from the paper f eed cassette or the multi- pur pose tray . If optional paper feeder (PF-25) is installed, an y of these can also be selected. The FEED ke y can be used whenev er the message display indicates Ready or Add paper .
2-14 Switching Online/Offline After printing starts, it is possible to interrupt printing to check whether the print job is coming out as anticipated. Pressing the ON LINE key during data processing w.
2-15 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer Canceling Printing P erform the follo wing procedure when you wish to cancel printing after it has begun. 1. Check if the message Processing is displa yed in the message displa y . 2. Press the ON LINE ke y to take the printer offline.
2-16 Press the CANCEL k ey again if y ou wish to stop the cancellation of printing. Press the ON LINE ke y to put the pr inter back online to contin ue with other print jobs. Notes ● Canceling data from the computer using the CANCEL ke y will restore temporar y settings to their def ault values .

2-18 1 Software version This inf or mation shows the softw are v ersion and date of issue of the printer . 2 Hard ware information This inf ormation shows the currently selected paper feed source (indicated b y an aster isk), paper size, and main settings of the printer .
2-19 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer 8 Fonts at startup (for each interface) This shows the font automatically selected when the printer starts up (default font). It is possible to set diff erent f onts f or the parallel interf ace and the ser ial interface .
2-20 Form Feed The message Waiting may be displa yed in the message display when y ou get to the end of a print job . This occurs when the software does not issue a final form f eed to the printer indicating the end of the print data. In this case, pressing the FORM FEED key allows you to finish printing immediately .
2-21 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer 2.3. Mode Selection Menu This section e xplains the menu hierarch y used for all men us which can be set and selected using the MODE ke y . The MODE key can be used to displa y all of the menus in the table belo w .

2-24 2.4. Configuring Interfaces The printer is equipped with both a parallel and serial interface . Independent settings can be made for each interface. Optional interfaces can also be installed. T o configure each interf ace, press the MODE ke y and use the + or – ke y to select the interface y ou wish to make settings f or .
2-25 Chapter 2 Operating the Laser Printer 2.5. Emulation Selection The follo wing emulations can be selected for this printer . The emulation selected is stored ev en while the printer’ s pow er is off .
2-26 2.6. Reduction (Page Set) Make settings on the page set menu to print at a reduced siz e. This menu is used to set the source paper size and the paper siz e to use after reduction. These settings can be made from within programs or files using the PRESCRIBE SPSZ command.

Sleep Timer Setting This printer is equipped with a sleep timer function for conserving energy in cases where there has been no operation from the control panel or data has not been received for a predetermined period of time. The sleep timer can be set anywhere from 0 to 120 minutes in 5-minute increments.

KIR provides high quality printing by providing a software-type improvement to the resolution. Print a status page to find out the current printing mode.
2-32 KIR Setting Description Optimized st r ipe s The current KIR setting is optimal. Da r k v e r tical st r ipe s The KIR mode currently set is too strong. Set the KIR mode to Off . T ry pr inting the test patter n again. If you still get dark vertical stripes, adjust the print density control to a lighter setting.

4-14 4. When the grid is clean, remov e the gr id cleaner from the printer and dispose of it. The grid cleaner is not re-usable . 5. After cleaning the charger wire and grid, push the cleaning knob all the wa y in and close the side cov er .
