ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE 1-1 1 Handling Paper This chapter explains the following topics: • General Guidelines..... .......................................... ....... 1-2 • S pecial Paper ............. .......................................... ..
Handling Paper 1-2 ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE General Guidelines The printer is desi gned to print on high -quality copier bond pape r (the kind used in ordinary dry copier mach ines), but it can also accept a variety of other types of paper within the limits specified below.
Handling Paper ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE 1-3 Paper Specifications The following table summarizes the basic paper specifications. Details are given on the following pages. Minimum and maximum p aper sizes The minimum and maximum paper size s are as follows.
Handling Paper 1-4 ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE Selecting the Right Paper Laser printing is a process involving laser light, electrosta tic discharge, toner, and heat. In addition, as the pap er passes through the printer it undergoes considera ble sliding, bend ing, and twisting motions.
Handling Paper ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE 1-5 Paper with other sizes (custom sizes) can also be fed from th e MP tray. The minimum size paper for man ual feed is 88 × 148 mm (3-1/2 × 5- 13/16 inches), fed lengthwise. The maximum size is 297 × 450 mm (11-11/16 × 17-3/4 inches).
Handling Paper 1-6 ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE Paper Weight Equiv alence T able The paper weight is listed in pounds (l b) and metric grams per square meter (g/m 2 ). The shaded part indicates the sta ndard weight. Thickness (Calipe r) Thick paper is referred to as high-ca liper paper and thin paper as low- caliper paper.
Handling Paper ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE 1-7 Moisture Co ntent Moisture content is defined as the perc ent ratio of moisture to the dry mass of the paper. Moisture ca n affect the paper’s appea rance, feedability, curl, electrostatic proper ties, and toner fusi ng characteristics.
Handling Paper 1-8 ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE Electrostatic properties: During the printing process, the paper is electrostatically charged to attract th e toner. The paper must be able to release this ch arge so th at printed s heets do not clin g together in the output tray.
Handling Paper ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE 1-9 S pecial Paper This section explains printing on sp ecial paper . The page printer can use the following type s of special paper.
Handling Paper 1-10 ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE T ransp arency Transparency must be able to withstand the heat of fu sing during the printing process. It should satisfy the conditions given in the table below. If transparency jams frequently, pull the top of th e sheet very gently as it leaves the printer.
Handling Paper ADVANCED OPERAT ION GUIDE 1-11 Some label paper is manufactured with an extra marg in of top sheet around the edge. Do not remove the extra top sheet from the carrier sheet until after printing is finished. The table below lists the specific ations for adhesive label paper.
Handling Paper 1-12 ADVANCED OPERATION GUIDE Do not use envelopes that have an encapsulated liquid a dhesive. Avoid long printing runs consistin g of envelopes only.
