microKORG XL 12 Qu i c k s ta rt 1. Demo per formance Listening to the demo The microKORG XL contains demo songs that show off its sounds ( J p. 98 “3.Demo Song”). 1. Hold down the [ EXIT/SHIFT] bu tton and pr ess the [ARP ON] button. The demo performance will begin.
Quick start 13 Playing a v ocoder program A vocoder modifies the signal from an oscillator or other source (the “car- rier”) by applying the spectral characte r istics of an external input source such as a human voice (the “modulator”).
microKORG XL 14 3. Modifying the sound T o make your performance more expr essive , you can modi fy the sounds of the microKORG XL by using the [1]–[3] knobs, the [PITCH] wheel, the [MOD] wheel, and by how you pla y the keyboard. T ry out various ways to play each program you select.
Quick start 15 Using the [ OCTA VE] le ver to swit ch oc tav es The area of pitches assigned to the keyboar d can be changed in one- octave steps over a range of +/–3 oct aves.
microKORG XL 16 Using the k nobs to modify the sound Performance edit parameters When the [KNOB FUNCTION SELECT] dial is set to “ASSIGN,” “FIL TER,” “AMP EG ,” “EFFECT ,” or “ARP ,” you can use knobs [1]–[3] to control the performance edit functions.
0 Attack Level Time Note on Note off Level [1]: Attack Time [3]: Sustain Level [2]: Decay Time [4]: Release Time [1] [3] [4] [2] EG2 Quick start 17 P er formance editing when ASSIGN is selected If the [KNOB FUNCTION SELECT] dial is set to “ASSIGN,” the most useful parameters for the currently selected program will be assigned to the knobs.
microKORG XL 18 4. Pla ying arpeggios Using the arpeggia tor The arpeggiator is a function that automatically plays a br oken chord (arpeggio) when you hold down a chord on the keyboard.
Editing the sound 19 Editing the sound 1. Ho w a program is or ganized Before you start editing, you’ll need to understand the basics of how the sounds are created. Once you understand how the microKORG XL ’s sounds are structured, you’ll be able to freely create the sounds you want.
microKORG XL 20 Oscillator (OSC1, OSC2, NOISE) Oscillator 1 (OSC1) lets you choose from seven types of oscilla tor algo- rithm such as the sawtooth wave or square w ave familiar from analog syn- thesizers, as well as formant wa ve, noise, and PCM/DWGS, and also lets you select the input signal from the AUDIO IN jack.
Editing the sound 21 Arpeggiator (ARPEGGIA TOR) The arpeggiator automatically generates an arpeggio (broken chord) when you hold down a chord on the keyboard. For programs t hat use two tim- bres, you can apply the arpeggiator to ei ther or both timbr es.
microKORG XL 22 Carrier (CARRIER) The most suitable choice as a carrier is a waveform that contains large numbers of overtones, such as a sawtooth wave or pulse wave.
Editing the sound 23 3. Full E dit mode If you set the [KNOB FUNCTION SELECT] dial to “FU LL EDIT ,” all o f the parameters will be available for editing. NOTE This inc ludes the MIDI-r elated se ttings (GLOBAL). Editing in Full Edit mode 1. Select the program that you want to edit.
microKORG XL 24 If the parameter value does not change when y ou turn the kno b Suppose that you’ve turned knob [1] to edit a certain parameter , and that the knob is in the position shown.
Editing the sound 25 The LED of the selected timbre will light-up, and that timbre will be the one affected by your editing. NOTE The TIMBRE SEL ECT LED won’t light if t he COMMON page “VO - IC.MOD E” pa rameter is SINGLE . The LED of the tim bre being edited will l ight if you’ ve selected LA YER, SPLIT , or MUL TI as the voice mode ( J p.
microKORG XL 26 3. Connect an audio signal from your external device to the input, and adjust the AUDIO IN [LEVEL] knob as high as possible without allowing the “C LIP” indicator to appear in the display . 4. Play th e keyboard while listening to the sound.
Editing the sound 27 3. Use knob [3] to turn the selected step on/of f. TYPE: UP LAST STEP: 8 In the display , enabled steps are indicated as “O” (on). If you turn knob [3] to change the indication to “–” (off), that step will be a rest. NOTE The number of av ailabl e steps is spe cified by the ARP page “LAST .
microKORG XL 28 5. O ther func tions Initializing a program Here’s how to initialize the settings of the currently selected program. 1. In Full Edit mode, turn knob [1] to select “IN IT .PROG .” 2. T urn knob [2] to make the display indicate “SURE Y/N.
Editing the sound 29 Procedure for transmission Connect the microKORG XL ’s MIDI OUT connector to the MIDI IN of the device that will be receiving the MIDI data dump, and set both devices to the same MIDI channel. If you want to use a USB connection, co nnect the microKORG XL to your computer via a USB cable.
microKORG XL 30 2. Use knob [2] to select the desired type of preload dat a. 1 PROG: Only the data for the currently selected program w ill be loaded (the parameters of the NAME–VC BANK pages and the settings of the front panel buttons and knobs) . ALL PROG: All program data will be loaded.
Saving (Writing) 31 Sa ving ( Writing) 1. S aving the settings y ou’v e edit ed If you’ve edited a program and would like to u se that edited program again in the future, you’ll need to save (write) it. Likewise, if you’ve edited settings in the GLOBAL–USR.
microKORG XL 32 P arameter Guide 1. Timbre parameters NAME The microKORG XL lets you assign a name of up to eight characters to each program. In Play mode, the display will show the program number an d program name. T o edit the program name 1. Use knob [1] to select the NAME page.
Parameter Guide 33 T2MIDI.CH (Timbre 2 MIDI channel) .................... ......... [ GLOBAL, 01…16] When the “VOIC.MODE” is set to either Layer or Multi, this parameter can be used to set the MIDI channel for timbre 2. If you choose Global, the MIDI channel of timbr e 2 will match the global MIDI channel.
microKORG XL 34 KNOB Here you can assign the parameter that will be controlled by kn obs [1]–[3] when you set the [KNOB FUNCTION SELECT] dial to ASSIGN. Y ou can make assignments for knobs [1]–[3] independently for timbre 1 and timbre 2; the knobs will control t he timbre that’s selected by the [TIMBRE SELECT] lever .
Parameter Guide 35 UNISON Here you can adjust settings for the Un ison function which “stacks” voices at the same pitch to create a richer sound. MODE ............ ............... ............ ............... [ OFF , 2 V OICE , 3 VOICE , 4 VO ICE] When the Unison Switch is turned on, y ou can specify the numbe r of voices that will be stacked.

Higher settings of th is parameter will allow changes in your keyboard velocity to produce gr eater differences in EG amplitude.
microKORG XL 48 LFO 1, LFO 2 Each timbre contains two LFOs. An LFO produces a cyclic change that can be used to modulate the pitch, tone, or volume of the sound . NOTE LFO1 and LFO2 can b e used as Virtu al Patch s ources to apply modula - tion to a variety of p aram eters.
Parameter Guide 49 ON : The LFO will be synchronized to the [TEMPO] knob or to MIDI Clock messages from an external device. NOTE If “BPM SYNC” is On, select ing LFO1FREQ or LFO2FREQ as “DEST” i n P A T CH 1–6 w ill have no ef fect. FREQ (Frequency) .
